Gass 17 in Appenzell

Service and food were good, but our place (despite reservation at 3 p.m.) was very unsatisfactory. The first bar table, right at the entrance. Constant entry and exit traffic, draft and no privacy. You have to go through the toilet from this place the entire restaurant. The landlord didn't send me back very kindly when I wanted to take the shortcut behind the counter. So you just have to stand in line at the back and wait for the other guests to sit down or leave to get through.

We really enjoy eating at Gass 17. Unfortunately there is a small menu but the food that is served is really top! The service is also very funny and accommodating. Personally, I find that the seating is very tight and therefore it can be a bit louder. The Gass 17 is a little more expensive but is right in the heart of Appenzell.

It's always a culinary and cultural pleasure to come back to Gass 17! As soon as we are back in Switzerland, we are immediately drawn here! The dishes are divine, taste like they look, delicious, colorful, locally sourced and simply good!! 😋😋😋 Same as the ambience; The high table, from where you can watch the chef prepare something, is my favorite place and you can enjoy the warm fire right away! 🔥🌳 The best thing to do is reserve a spot online, especially when the sun is already peeking out a bit! 🌞🥰 The service is efficient and never loses its friendliness or sense of humor despite the large crowds! 😍 It's a joy! 💃🏽💜👍💗😋😍😋

Had minor difficulties finding the entrance...but we're so happy we did! Service...1A. superlative, friendly, fast AND attentive. Food: delicious, pretty, and not overbearing. Both the Cordon Bleu as well as the beef were spot on. The spinach was fantastic. Ice teas were delicious and a treat. The vegan choices were well chosen, and delicious as well. Atmosphere: not too loud, not too quiet. Can't wait to come back here... We really enjoyed ourselves here very much! Many thanks for an awesome time!

Diverse menu, fine wines, great restaurant. Very busy on weekends, reservations are not accepted, tables are booked several times in the evening. Staff, well... more interested in maximizing profits than in hospitality. But all in all worth a visit. Cheers

This is a warning to anyone eating here that orders cordon blue. They use toothpicks to close the pork. Many restaurants use butchers string because of the safety issue with toothpicks. I was served a cordon blue pork chop that had three toothpicks still in the dish. It was not obvious and I WAS NOT WARNED BY THE SERVER. This was obviously a mistake but it could have had fatal consequences. There was no manager on duty. I had to go back into their kitchen where there was light and ask them if they could see it as I still felt it stuck in there. No it looks good. It wasn’t. I began to violently cough and fortunately it dislodged and flew into the sink. Please be careful eating here and anywhere that serves stuffed meat. Most places use butchers string but you never know. I just have to hope the other end of the tooth pick was still in the meat and is not in my stomach or I might still have an issue. It was only the second bite so it is not a review of the food. There should always be a manger and someone should be trained in first aid at least that is how it is in Canada.

This is a wonderful restaurant in Appenzell! Everything was cooked to perfection and even the simplest things (like the veggies and the salad) were absolutely delicious. I also loved that the desserts weren't too sweet. Highly recommend!!

They would not serve the food menu tonight but it was hanging on the post. If u have no staff and your kitchen is closed, maybe hang a sign.

Very pleasant and friendly server despite the language. Reasonable waiting time between order and service. Excellent peasant pork chop. Cordon bleu with Appenzel coulant. Tiramisu runnier than usual. Be careful of the toothpicks that hold the cordon bleu!

There is a barbecue in Gass 17. We had the chicken breast and the chop. Both very fine. The fries (finely cut) and even the vegetable pot were also fine (I say this as a man who tends to avoid vegetables). A well-established team for this. I can recommend it.

Fine pastry shop - in a side street - self-service - a little away from the main square, where there is usually a lot going on. Ambience: very nice pastry shop inside - outside seating in a side street - around lunchtime: sunny spots. Very good alternative to the main square

Excellently run restaurant with a clever lunch menu. Vegetarians and meat eaters get their money's worth. The mixed salad, which is served in four Weck glasses, is special. The French fries alumettes were excellent. Went great with my club sandwich.

This place was awesome. Excellent customer service and amazing food. We’re big foodies and have high standards. The lentils were pretty good but didn’t knock my socks off - what did impress us most was the pork chop - one of the best we’ve ever had in our lives and the build your own pizza on Monday’s. We liked it so much we went back twice in 3 days. I forgot to take photos of the pork chop but trust me it’s worth it.

We enjoyed our lunch at Gass 17. Service was simply superb - our waitress went above and beyond. The food was really good, and we appreciated the open kitchen. Our table was right by it, and it is always a great experience to see the cooks at work!

What can I say here! I don't know exactly whether they have a competition in serving or in the kitchen, but both would receive the gold medal, we are thrilled and can highly recommend Gasse 17. I have never eaten such an excellent Buurekottlett in my life, and by the way, a reservation is strongly recommended.

Nice experience in Gass17! However, 2 things could be improved : we waited much too long for a cheese plate and a club sandwich (about 25 mn), and the cheese plate could have been served with explanations (the name of the cheese, the animal, ...) However the price is fair : much cheaper than everywhere else in Switzerland, nice staff, and excellent quality

Sitting outside is always a great pleasure to enjoy the charming little town. It could be one of the dining destinations. The steak served on a warm plate was nice by itself as expected. French fries are well cut and crispy. The fried fish was more like a nugget though.

I ate two evenings and both evenings were great, super pleasant and smiling staff. Nice menu and super good food, I will come back and recommend.

A very lovingly run restaurant with very tasty food. We sat outside in the alley and enjoyed the entire ambience. Lamb fillet with fried potatoes and leaf spinach was attractively served and tasted really delicious. We were excited for dessert when it came to tiramisu. And we were really excited. A very tasty, homemade tiramisu. We'll definitely be back.

Do not reserve online!! Although our online reservation was confirmed, no table was reserved for us. Our reservation could be found in the system, but the staff ignored it. Nobody cared, the store seems to be running smoothly. The food cannot be rated, it didn't get that far.

Excellent food and beautiful location. A modern and cutting-edge interior but with less than attentive service. They forgot about our reservation but luckily the table was there anyway. We waited about an hour to be able to eat, also due to the fact that the staff were awkward and our waiter sat down to drink and chat with his friends. Too bad, with the prices offered I would have expected greater attention to detail.
