Grande Dixence dam in Hérémence

Huge and impressive dam with a height of 285 meters. It is the more massive dam with this height in the world. It was built between 1953 and 1961, and 6 million cubic meters of concrete were used to achieve the structure. The huge reservoir created is called "Lac de Dix" - Lake Dix, meaning ten in French. You can drive up to the base of the dam and park your car there. There is a cable car taking you up to the top where you can walk on the verge of the dam and admire the scenery. It's just stunning.

Visited in September before they shut for the winter and well worth the visit of you're in the area. It's hard to imagine how tall the dam is until you're stood at the bottom looking up 😲 we took the inside tour and glad we did as it was quite interesting. My kids also went on the zip wire across the dam and enjoyed it a lot 😁 There is a restaurant in the nearby hotel which serves nice coffees so would recommend a visit there too.

Great place. It's an amazing feeling to stand at the bottom (on the dry side 😁) of the dam. And this awareness of what is on the other side. I recommend.

Great visit to the dam, very interesting

Very impressive dam when you arrive at the foot. It's a concrete monster. Possibility of going up to the dam on foot or by cable car. At the foot of the cable car, there is an exhibition which explains the construction of the dam. Once you arrive at the top, the view is breathtaking. Whatever the side, the landscape is majestic. The interior tour of the dam isn't bad either. Just a small downside, the temperature (6°C) and you need to bring a little warmer clothing. I recommend the visit in addition to the fact that it is the largest gravity dam in the world.

Probably one of the best places to observe the beauty of the Swiss mountains. Magnificent hikes allowing you to observe the fauna and flora (eagles, chamois, marmots, etc.). The glaciers are visible, explanatory signs along the hikes inform us about the fauna, flora and geology. The ibex trail is incredible to do, bring water, food and good shoes obviously. Possibility of spending a great day of discovery with children but be careful to take away your waste, not leave anything lying around, and above all be silent in order to respect the fragile balance that resides in this place.

Incredible huge dam . The water of the gletschers in the area fload in the lake . With the water they produce electricity for the region . Very interesting to make a visit if you enjoy beautiful vieuws and water . If you enjoy walking … there are plenty of routes to walk around the area and beyond . For FR 10 you can take a lift to the top of the dam.

Gorgeous! We did the ibex trail to have a view of the lake and waterfall. We were able to see quite a few marmots and we enjoyed magnificent landscapes (3 hours of fairly sustained walking)

Breathtaking landscape. We went in the summer and it was also worth it! We climbed the dam and from up there the view is incredible. I recommend!

Gorgeous ! We did the interior tour and it was really interesting. You need to bring good shoes and a jacket (it’s 6°). The visit lasts about 1 hour and is not too difficult. We took the cable car package to go for a ride on the dam. Downstairs, several parking lots, toilets and a restaurant.

One of the highest dams, the Grande Dixence is a colossal structure. Bordered by hiking trails, open your eyes, lots of marmots are taking ☀️ baths on the stones. A zip line crosses the dam, reserve a slot when you arrive (25.- adults). Enjoy this amazing place.

Magnificent dam to absolutely visit

Impressive dam! On foot, the climb is strenuous (~30-40min), the descent is easy (20-25min) but in both cases I recommend good shoes (the walking path is marked but not present on Google maps, the recommended one gives a detour.) The zip line is awesome! Not an attraction for thrills but one for enjoying the view. The visit to the dam is a bit brief, which is a shame. We would like to have the time to read the information written on the signs along the tour.

Impressive dam, it is huge. Very beautiful view of the valley from above. I recommend taking the cable car to go up (10.-). On foot the climb is steep. Last descent of the cable car at 5:00 p.m. Possibility of going on a very beautiful hike.

Higher than Eiffel Tower. Accessible by car only in summer.

Beautiful views, incredible scale of investment. Only for me - there could be more (e.g. machines, installations, etc.) shown during the tour. Because really, it's a walk with an interesting story along several corridors and climbing the stairs. On the other hand, the price is not high, so there is no disappointment. The trail to the crown is quite short (35-45 min), but rather difficult, I can't imagine doing it wet. Just getting to the dam provides beautiful landscapes.

Visited last fall. Splendid in good weather. Beautiful walks to take along the reservoir. The visit to the dam is interesting but unfortunately the guide (a student) did not master the subject.

Went to the Grande Dixence dam for the first time... It was a great experience... What could have been created 70 years ago... Fascinating... The journey can also be easily completed by public transport... By bus from Sion you can reach the dam in an hour... You can walk up or take the cable car... Both are highly recommended... 👍🏻

Hiking trail to the end of the lake

Officially closed to bicycles from the hotel. You can only get to the top of the dam on foot. There are more impressive dams. However, the view of the valley is very beautiful

Good view, the cable car a bit shaky, good for hiking. There are plenty of parking spaces available, but travel is difficult.

A beautiful place with splendid views that make us feel very small

The visit to the interior of the dam and the guide's explanations are particularly interesting. Everything is recommended. We took the gondola and hiked up into the hills. Magnificent setting! The only complaint? Food truck at the dam to flee urgently even if your stomach begs you!

A superb place, absolutely worth visiting. Zipline experience not to be missed. Don't forget to take the time to have a coffee upstairs, the waiter is super friendly and very warm.

The visit is great, very nice and educational. On the other hand, it's cool, you really have to be very well dressed. Big downside, the restaurant: it's very expensive and we ate very badly. Overcooked pesto spaghetti and tasteless pesto (not to mention that we and our neighbors were brought something other than what we had ordered).

Superb dam with an impressive dimension. Definitely worth the detour even without a guided tour, because the signs already explain a lot of things. Access by cable car in less than 5 minutes or on foot in less than an hour via a path which is a little steep (with good steps) in the intermediate part. The wider and longer path was prohibited during our visit.

Beautiful day spent in this place with breathtaking views of the Alps where it is possible to take easy walks even for families or venture out as the glaciers approach. Upon reservation, it is possible to take a guided tour inside the underground of the dam to discover the maintenance and history of its construction. Really interesting. You have to cover yourself well because it's 6 degrees in the basement. Suitable for adults and children.

Unique experience, total amazement. I recommend the visit to the heart of the dam + the gondola ride with a breathtaking view and to return to take the path that will take you back to the foot of the Ritz 😉 Amazing family experience.

A very nice place to walk around the dam, many paths in different directions, the zipline costs only 25 CH. Entrance to the dam by roller coaster in both directions costs CH 10 and CH 5 for children. I recommend it, but you have to be careful with small children.

This dam is higher than the Hoover Dam (225m) on the Colorado River. Unbelievable when you drive under it to the parking lot. A 285m wall above you. Like most dams in the Alps, the water is channeled below to the turbines. That wall height is also accentuated by a narrow canyon. Amazing technical work!!!

Great place, top notch experience, powerful, interesting, something to experience

Magical, easy to find (we took a coach) and totally breath-taking. I took my yoga group on this excursion and we all giggled, high from the oxygen and joy of the picture perfect vistas. A must in the Swiss Alps.

Really impressive piece, especially when you stand at the foot of the parking lot and feel very small in front of this huge building! Always worth a trip. At the top of the wall you have a really nice panorama.
