Impressive views of the Alpstein Mountains and friendly staff

Well, basically there's nothing wrong with lowering your expectations a bit. I wanted to take a short walk at the weekend to the otherwise quiet Hohen Buche. I didn't think it would be so well attended here. The restaurant was very busy, it is self-service, the staff was very simple. The guests are probably even simpler, which again goes well together. We shoveled the snow off the table and bench ourselves and melted the ice. It's great to frolic around outside, take photos of the Alpstein and there was even a prepared hiking route.

Lots of ways to get here. It's always worth it, the view is simply great. Very good nut croissants and then a tea glory, mhhh! Good simple menu available.

A top destination with fantastic views for decades.

Bad mood? Juice was inedible, warm and fermented. When this was pointed out, the reaction was extremely angry and the guest was lectured in front of everyone. Rarely seen such a bad reaction. We were here for the last time - it was chaotically organized. The advantage is the location.

Starting in Bühler today we walked up to the Hohe Buche. What awaited me here was, in addition to a great view, very friendly service, good quality food and a price-performance ratio that was right. Gladly again!

Cheerful staff served us croissants with boiled sausage and applesauce, a typical Appenzeller specialty. It was very tasty and I can recommend it at any time. :-)

Great view and great place. Unfortunately very poor service. People smoke in the kitchen in front of customers, and not for the first time. Questionable in terms of hygiene.

One of the most beautiful viewpoints in Appenzellerland! From up here, the country is practically under your feet. The viewpoint and restaurant are easy to reach. As a guest of the restaurant you can also drive up by car. I always run up from the crossroads. Restaurant with simple, regionally good cuisine.

The tall beech tree has a huge location advantage! So much view and foresight is a great thing, especially on the terrace. The restaurant itself is rather simple. This also has to do with the fact that the restaurant burned down many years ago and the innkeeper's family decided to continue operating in a temporary manner. The selection is relatively small and classic, but the quality is good. The hosts make an effort and are happy to take time when they have it. When things get busy, friendliness sometimes suffers a little. Personally, I really appreciate that there is still homemade "Ghürootne", a mixture of sour and sweet apple juice. This is now a bit of a rarity; the 0815 mixture is usually available in a bottle. No comparison.

The view was very nice, but the selection of food in the restaurant was very small. There were some ice creams, two different sweets and drinks

the BEST cheese salad in the whole Alpstein! (if you like strong mountain cheese, like me)👊🤩🧀👍 After I immediately praised the cheese salad on the spot, I was allowed to try an even stronger cheese from the friendly landlady, which was really very nice. We have rarely received such friendly service! 😘

The trip here with a view restaurant is worthwhile!

The view is amazing... Above all, you can hike a bit first and then eat/have a snack in the high air. Just as we Austrians say that. When the weather is nice there is a lot going on! So head to the mountains early. And staff can become a bit unfriendly when stressed. Otherwise nice...✌️🍀🙏🌸

Location very nice. The service was absolutely amateurish, even a few people were completely overwhelmed. I've never experienced anything so unfriendly. I first had to digest what I experienced there for a while. Worst of all is the boss. She even handed out assholes. How can you host like that? Leave it alone if you don't enjoy it.

Wonderful view, easy hike to Hohe Buche. You can park your car at Wissegg. So the route to the Hohe Buche is even shorter.

Little insider tip! It's a bit hidden from outsiders (poorly signposted) and away from the more well-known excursion destinations. Is easy to reach by car (central parking lot, 15m easy walk), by bike and on hiking trails. Simple menu with simple dishes at fair prices. The restaurant is typically rural and authentic and fits in with the surroundings. Big plus point: wonderful sun terrace with a view, see photo. Currently self-service. Be sure to try the huge nut sticks with mulled wine. Gladly again.

Nice view, selection of food rather simple, but good. We enjoyed it. The hospitality was rather modest. I didn't feel like I was welcome as a guest. A pity.

Nice view of the Hohe Buchen. The kitchen door is wide open, so the cook (landlord) is preparing the dinner plates without gloves while preparing. Unabentittlich. Too many people are waiting in line in front of the checkout without any distance. No concept. Masks are worn by people. You get the feeling that the host couple is always on However, working is without joy and you know that with the mountain restaurant you have the advantage of always having guests. However, in terms of Corona, they apparently immediately notice when there are five of you sitting at the table outside. The toilet is simple but clean. I would like to go there again, but I wouldn't do it to everyone recommend.Medium to poor grades.

Eigentlich ein schöner Platz für einen Halt, dir Bedienung ist allerdings unterirdisch unfreundlich. Fragt man nach dem Angebot, wird einem die Karte fast hingeworfen, nach einem Hinweis, dass ein falsches Getränk gebracht wurde, wird man beinahe beschimpft. Kritik kommt natürlich nicht gut an Schade um den schönen Ort, der etwas Charme verdient hätte...

It's a beautiful place with a wonderful view to the lake of Constance and the surrounding areas of Appenzell. The restaurant has been run by the present owners for many years. The choice of food is simple and satisfactory. The reason I give only 3 * is that after a long hike , one needs to queue up to order the food and another queue for the ladies loo too as there is only one toilet. Having said that, I still would go back as the hike from Teufen is a good one where you see alot of cows, horses, sheep and chicken on the way.

Super fine food, nice hosts and the view is great. We'll be back.

We took a snow hike to the tall beech tree and the view is breathtaking! We just had something to drink in the restaurant. The atmosphere was cozy, warm and relaxing... We'd love to come back!

Tolle Aussicht, aber dies allein genügt nicht. Wenn ich mir all die anderen Bergrestaurants im Appenzellerland vorstelle ( super mega Rösti oder Chäshhörnli, etc ) dann fehlt hier jegliche kulinarische Phantasie und Vielfalt. Bei dieser Speisekarte ( verdient den Namen nicht) braucht es keinen Koch.

Bitte Auto bei Kantonsstrasse parkieren oder noch besser ab Trogen zu Fuss gehen. Kleine aber köstliche Karte. Personal leider bei guter Auslastung sehr gestresst...
