Unfortunately we have to write down a negative review today. We have been guests in Zermatt for years and regularly go to Restaurant Julen for dinner. The lamb dishes are really good and we can highly recommend them. What really disappointed us last night, however, was the Chateaubriand. Three out of six people ordered Chateaubriand. The taste of the sauce could not be compared to a Bernaise sauce. It was bland and floury, with a strangely sweet aftertaste and, unfortunately, the consistency was completely separated into different phases (see photo). The meat - ordered by all three as "à point/medium" - was more than "saignant". When we pointed out the problems, the meat was put back on the grill and then came back a little more cooked. The sauce, even in the new batch, is still not edible. The presentation on the plate for 58.- was simply sad (see photo). A schnapps and coffee were offered as an apology. Nevertheless, the disappointment of this evening was lasting despite the nice service.

They spoke some Chinese to us~ It happened to be New Year's Eve in 2024 and the clerk also said Happy New Year to us~ I thought it was very interesting We ordered the mixed lamb stew, roast lamb and lamb knuckles They are all very delicious. It is the first time I taste black sheep and there is no smell of sheep. Highly recommended to anyone who comes to Zermatt to try it It’s really nice to take a walk after eating to see the night view But I feel a little thirsty after eating. The food here seems to be too salty. When paying, the clerk asked us to enter the amount of the tip ourselves. We can give it or not. This method is quite comfortable.

I loved this restaurant. It had a nice vibe to it, great service, and great food. I went there alone and ordered a venison + noodle appetizer, along with fondue. The venison was great, with a generous portion of meat. And the fondue was fantastic as well - it seems as if the minimum portion size is for two people, yet they only charged me for a single serving, without even an upcharge; I greatly appreciated this. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting zermatt. Note: When I walked in there was a rather pungent aroma. This is something I've encountered at multiple restaurants in Zermatt. Thankfully, however, the smell was not quite as strong as other places, and I quickly got used to it. Also, the bartender Michelle is fantastic!

Tip: if you can't nail a reservation in advance, come here when they open and very likely you'll get a table! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Smoked lamb: generous portion - savory, tasty, thin slices of lamb paired perfectly with cheese! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lamb shank: tender and marinated well. Gravy is intensely flavored. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lamb rack: portion is smaller as it has only 4 slices. But the quality is top notch. We were told that they came from the Black Nose. ⭐⭐⭐truffle soup: portion is too small and tastes a little plain. Service can be more attentive. Overall this is a great place to try out if it's your first time visiting Zermatt.

Three nights in Zermatt and three different restaurants all of similar average ratings and prices. Julen was third in our list, and therefore is remembered for that. Nice bar area, a bit corporate and to be honest a bit frantic and overrated. For example our waiter took our order, didn't write anything down, rushed off to deal with coats in the reception? and consequently got the order wrong. In fairness they made up for the error, but you just knew that something like that was bound to happen. (And it was the most expensive!)

Upon entering this restaurant, we initially perceived it as a traditional Swiss eatery. To our surprise, they elevated the service to an exceptional level. Following a day of exhausting skiing, our family dinner became truly memorable due to the outstanding food, ambiance, and personalized service. The cheese fondue, king prawns with rice, and pickles were particularly delightful.

It is an obviously racist restaurant, and the service staff are obviously impatient when assisting non-Europeans to order food. The lamb chops were delicious, tender, and slightly undercooked. The price point corresponds to the quality of food and service, and overall it's pretty average. A bottle of water costs 6 yuan, which is more expensive than Coke.

The food was okay, but the waitress failed to get our food ordered correctly. We told the waitress that we want to share the food and ordered 1 lamb rack, 1 lamb tongue, and 1 meat fondue. The dishes came up with 1 fondue pot and 3 plates of meat. So we thought that it was the meat fondue we ordered. But later we realized something must be wrong because the meat portion was pretty large. The ladies couldn’t even finish their own plates. So we asked what we ordered, and the reply was that we ordered 3 meat fondues. Why would we order 3 exact same fondues after we said we’ll share the food? And why is there only 1 fondue pot if we ordered 3? I didn’t want to spend time arguing so I just paid the bill and left. But this is definitely an unpleasant dining experience.

Excellent birthday dinner at the Julen restaurant located in the hotel of the same name. Beautiful decoration typical of the Zermatt region and good atmosphere. Very professional service and special mention for the waitress Gabriella who was very kind and available. She advised us on the choice of starter which turned out to be a very good choice, and also offered us a small birthday cake for dessert accompanied by congratulations and a song from the staff present. The only negative point to note: it was hot and the white wine was more noticeable than the cheese in the “homemade” fondue that we ate. I highly recommend !

When we originally planned to come to Zermatt, my husband had already made a reservation at this restaurant. It happened to be near the Hotel Bristol where we were staying, about a five-minute walk away. We ordered an appetizer and two main meals totaling CHF107! ! ! It’s about NT$3,900. If you want something new, you can try the black-faced lamb cuisine, but it can’t be compared with Taiwanese food. You can eat better food in Taiwan at this price, but considering the price in Switzerland, it may be their daily meal. , don’t come in with too high expectations, you will feel everything is wonderful hahaha But the meat quality of the lamb chops as an appetizer is really amazing🤤🤤

We dined at Restaurant Julen 6x during our 18N stay in Zermatt late Nov. Great service by ❇️Gabriella , Bruno, Duc & Virginia (hope I got their names right). They kindly reserved our fav table near the window during each visit and we liked the ambience which gave us enough space without feeling cramped. We had their superb tender Lamb knuckle (similar to a lamb shank), lamb stew (from their black nosed sheep), home made lamb sausages (packed solid & filling) , mixed fresh salad with lamb fillet (a good choice if you aren’t too hungry). For dessert, we had the choc lava cake & ginger wasabi ice cream to share, on separate occasions. All of which we highly recommend. Their recommended Syrah red wine to go with the food was good. We were happy to see the owner come around to greet and thank the diners for their patronage.

BAD EXPERIENCE! Food was very bland. I ordered tandoori shrimp and I can vouch that was nothing but salt, pepper and paprika powder on it, Tasteless. The whole dish was a basic shrimp stir fry which you get from any side restaurants for 1/3 of the price. It was not worth CHF 44. The soup was CHF 14 and it was all butter with no flavor to it, as if I was drinking hot melted butter. The servers were not attentive. Despite asking for water, which was right behind me, they didn’t care and only brought water after asking a second time… and it came after my food. This was supposed to be a very upscale experience but sadly I was very disappointed. Flavorless dishes and high prices sounds like a very awful place to dine in. Save your self money and research a better experience.

Don't get cheese fondue here. It’s not up to par with the rest of the dishes on the menu. The cheese fondue is much too alcoholic with white wine and kirsch. It is also too liquid. Too bad especially for the 32CHF requested per ration. A carafe of tap water at 6 CHF is a steal in Switzerland. It’s disrespectful to the customer who consumes wine, aperitifs and coffee. The rest of the dishes were good (deer stew). Beautiful setting and attentive service.

If you need to celebrate a birthday, you can tell them and maybe you can get a better seat. We were arranged by the window, with a good view and atmosphere. The appetizer of scallops was very delicious. We ordered one portion and the restaurant divided it into two portions for us, which was a great bonus. The main course of lamb chops was a two-portion meal, great value and very tasty. For the birthday celebration, a cake with candles and a cheerful happy birthday song was prepared. Celebrating a birthday abroad is priceless! ! All 104 CHF I think it is a great value and recommended!

It is recommended to make a reservation in advance, as there are many people, but you can also try your luck and ask on the spot. I happened to meet a group of 8 people who did not make a reservation, but they were still able to get a seat. Two people ordered the signature lamb chops and a cheese pot. Part of the mutton chop tastes like mutton at all, which makes people wonder if it is really mutton. The mutton chop is a bit raw but not fishy at all. The sauce is delicious. There is less meat and potatoes. The portion is small. Medium to not very filling. As for the cheese pot, the portion is very large, including a basket full of sliced bread and a bucket of small unseasoned boiled potatoes (about 10 by visual inspection), plus pickled cucumbers and very small pickled potatoes. White onion-like vegetables (personally think they are used to relieve fatigue), use a special fork to fork the food and dip it into the cheese pot to eat. It is very delicious, but there is wine in the cheese pot, and the wine will be drunk at the end of the meal. The taste will be very strong (the waiter said that you can ask for the cheese pot to be seasoned without wine. After eating it, we also felt that it would taste better without wine. We recommend that people who want to try the Swiss cheese pot order it). It was a great experience and delicious. Unfortunately, the portion of the cheese pot was too large for two people. There was still a lot left, which felt a bit wasteful.

Food was above average. Texture of the veal and lamb knuckle was cooked inconsistently. Some parts were tender but some were tough. But this was not the deal breaker. In general, the service was underwhelming. The male waiter was rude when taking our order. It was not stated in the menu that we had to order minimum one main course per person and he told us off for trying to do otherwise. The young female waitress who served our food stood at our table holding both plates staring at us blankly unsure of whether it was the right table. Would not come back again.

The most outstanding thing here was the level of thought and care put into honoring the family’s history and legacy. I loved the motifs of the sheep that were iconic but not tacky. The little booklets (available in english, deutch, german) regarding the julen family history and how they’ve become successful in the tourism industry was lovely! Food here was okay but def due to personal preference. Rhe beef tips were good and medium rare. The sauce is almost reminiscent of french cooking (cream, mushroom, flour, butter..). There were fried dough (?) bits that were abit rubbery. The zuchinni was so good i wish they gave more than one piece. The white wine i was recommended was great Service was great. Thanks denise. Nice restaurant attached to a hotel off the main street in Zermatt. Lovely setting inside. You can order a buffet menu, five courses which includes access to the salad bar - popular with larger tour groups and hotel guests, or there is a two course meal option. Alternatively you can order off the menu - we elected to do this. There are lots of lamb dishes which apparently comes from the family farm. Lamb tongue and shank were both highlights. Also really enjoyed the rosti which came with the sausages. Desserts were nice although trying to be a bit fancy/edgy - not so many simple options. Good spot for dinner in Zermatt.

We had the lamb chop and lamb knuckle. For us the lamb knuckle was a clear winner. Moist, tender, and flavorful. Dessert wise we had the pudding and wasabi/ ginger ice cream. The latter one was our preferred one, though could be even spicier with the wasabi. Overall great food, wine and service, we had a really good time. And not too formal that we feel uncomfortable walking in with our hiking clothes 😉 Highly recommend!

Nice food, bad service, just complaints about an Asian servant, he never asks us what we need or have eye contact with us since we told him we do not want any wine, meanwhile he shows full empathy to those who ordered something to drink. In the end, we told someone of their staffs we want our bill and it takes nearly 20mins till we went to the reception. Just feel disrespectful!

The black-faced lamb chops were delicious. The meat had a texture similar to beef (the owner mentioned it had only 35% fat content). The seasoning was also very tasty, and the accompanying potatoes were delicious. The fennel soup was also very flavorful. The price was reasonable, and I would highly recommend it.

Service and environment were excellent which unfortunately was not matched by the food. Although all food in Switzerland is expensive this restaurant is on the more expensive side and the food was well below average. We had lamb and carpaccio to start. Lamb was well cooked but had little to no taste. The carpaccio was okay but lacked seasoning and could have had stronger flavours. For main we had lamb stew and the snapper. The lamb stew was very basic but okay however the snapper was very bland and poorly cooked. Its texture was almost like pork. Both lacked seasoning and the presentation was awful. My wife and I commented that it was a bit like school dinners both in taste and presentation. To finish on a high the winner selection was excellent.

Michelin-recommended Black Goat restaurant. A friend has been here before, so I came with him for the second time today. The scallops as an appetizer were very delicious. The waiter was kind enough to help us divide the plates and give out meal packages. Black goat knuckle with red wine sauce is a classic dish and affordable. I also ordered fried lamb tenderloin with rice. After the meal, I had a very special dish of ginger wasabi ice cream and chocolate mousse. Overall, the service is very friendly and the price/performance ratio is good in a small town. Recommended🫶🏻

Service is quite poor. We were waiting quite long to order and then the wrong drinks were brought. But the worst part comes now. Some waiters don’t really understand either German or English. The waitress accidentally poured a cocktail on us, and I could not explain her that I need some napkins. The incident wasn’t handled appropriately also by a senior waiter, who offered me a dirty cloth they use for tables, when I asked for the wet wipes, as the sweet sticky splashes of the cocktail on my hand and watches have already dried in the sun... Accidents happen, but what matters is how they are handled later, when we speak about the tourist services. In this place the incident management is indeed poor.

It's best. Really thoughtful service, great atmosphere, everything is perfect. I think we should have made a reservation, but we were lucky enough to sit down and eat at a perfectly prepared table. It appears to be a lamb specialty restaurant. I hope you visit once. It's a bit salty for our taste, but it's a good place! The nice employee with dark hair who guided us (maybe his name is Duc?) was really kind and sensible, so we had a happy evening. Even though I was already full, I was happy that I ate well.

A very good restaurant, you can eat it twice in a row. The first time I had lemon balm pasta (see picture) which was really amazing, the leftovers were beautifully wrapped up and I was even given disposable cutlery. On the second visit, the first course was smoked sturgeon with apple-nut salad and the main course was veal steak under a herb-cheese crust Barley ragout and vegetables see pictures 2 and 3, both very tasty and the service on both days was very accommodating but not pushy.

Restaurant Julen on the 1st floor and Restaurant Schäferstube on B1 are both operated under Hotel Julen. They are very popular and must be reserved in advance. The difference from Schäferstube is that they serve other beef, fish and other meat dishes, but you can also order the ones downstairs. menu. The two of us ordered a black noodle lamb chop for the main meal. We misunderstood the meaning on the menu and thought that a lamb chop was for two people at 62CHF per person. In fact, it was only for one person. The waiter was very kind and helped us divide it into two. On the plate, the lamb chops taste and taste like filet mignon, seasoned just right, not oily and not salty, and have a faint lamb flavor at the end. It’s delicious and a great experience.
