Mandir in Basel

Ordered here but my meal delivery was inexplicably cancelled minutes before the food-tracker said it was ready. I was not informed, it just stopped tracking and showed an error. When I phoned to find out what happened the staff member was very rude to me and told me it was my problem now because the kitchen was closed. He did not once apologise or appear to care at all. Very disappointed that one of my (previously) favourite restaurants would have such poor communication and unsympathetic attitude.

I went to the mandir for the first time today and I have to say it was worth it. The food was simply heavenly and the service was very attentive and friendly. I will definitely come back and am already looking forward to it. See you soon.

There were relatively few guests on site, but we still had to wait a long time. The portion was relatively small, but the price was high. The food was also very spicy, even though it wasn't available anywhere. The service was friendly.

Excellent, original Indian flavor and very welcoming staff

A very nicely decorated restaurant. The food was excellent and super flavorful, like a symphony on the palate. We took the menu for CHF 50.00 (in the photos below) and it was excellent. The chicken was tender, which is not always the case in Indian restaurants.

Ordered the daal, it tasted off. I told the waiter that but he just denied it, instead of being concerned. The food made me and my partner sick. I called the next day to tell them that and they still seemed to just shrug it off. Food was overpriced as well. Won't be back.

So, so. Despite stressing I wanted my curry extra spicy, it was ignored and came out bland. I'm still thirsty from too much salt

indian food is usually not my thing, but ate at mandir tonite. food was amazingly delicious! we had chicken and beef dishes with butter garlic naan and yogurt on the side, and mango lassi…everything was simply very tasty and delightful! if you crave for good indian food, this is the place to go! service was also very friendly. keep up the good work!

A great Indian restaurant in Basel. Plenty of space on and around the tables, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Probably my favorite restaurant in Basel. I am an occasional visitor to Basel and this is a must visit on each trip. The food is also superb 😊

We were on the terrace for more than 15 minutes on two different days and were not served twice. The waitress just looked strangely through the window when we left! We will no longer consider this restaurant! And now this cheeky comment below speaks for itself! We were on the terrace today from 6 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.! 2 Indian customers went into the restaurant while we were sitting outside! So don't get cheeky little man!

The ambience is harmonious but not overloaded. One or two things could be renovated. We were there for lunch and had butter chicken and a mango lassi. Both were very good and the service was very friendly.

Friday evening and hungry. Coincidence brought me to the Indian restaurant Mandir. The Onion Bhadji was freshly prepared. A pleasant spiciness rounded off the first highlight of the evening. For my main course I ordered butter chicken. Fantastic. The rice was extremely fluffy and formed an excellent balance with the delicate sauce.

I was fairly a regular customer for the take away lunch menu. At least thrice a week. My office is right across this restaurant. For the past days I observed that the quantity is reducing. It happened today as well. So took back the box to ask about the reduction in quantity. To which, the owner took the take away box inside and hurled abuses at me in Hindi! He came back and handed over my take away box to me. I just kept the box back on his desk and I left. Never Again!!

Excellent, eaten with family one evening, the food is very good and tasty. The room is a little noisy unfortunately.

We ordered the Bollywood menu, great value for money. Pleasant spiciness, the ice cream for dessert was very fine. I can warmly recommend this restaurant.

Really nice place and great service! We loved the butter chicken and cheese naan. The service was incredibly nice and cheery and even allowed me to switch from rice to naan without having to pay the difference.

Best Indian restaurant for miles around. The Mango Lamb and Gohst Kastoori are the favourites in my family, but I can honestly say I've tried the majority of the menu and never been disappointed.

It went well three times, i.e. the food was extremely tasty. The fourth time it went completely wrong. The Malai Kofta Curry was too salty. the lamb curry had more fat and gristle than meat and the Peshawari naan was already dried out. How can that be? Really good Indian cuisine three times and then such a failure! Has the kitchen team changed? To top it off, Velogourmet delivered by car at 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. as announced. We don't order here anymore.

Unhygienic, there was something stuck to the bottom of the plate that smelled awful. Food was ok, but this experience was horrible.

Absolutely bad food! We ordered take away and the food delivered was really BAD. No offense, but these restaurants marketing Indian food should either learn how to cook or hire better chefs!! The lamb biryani had an intense smell of overcooked and burnt spices (eg: cardamon), the meat was over cooked and the rice was soggy and overcooked. They basically mixed overcooked rice and lamb curry together. The palak paneer was essentially store bought paneer mixed with store bought rahmspinat (spinach puree frozen with cream) and a huge chunk of raw tomato, they didn't even bother to simmer the ingredients together. Lastly, the naan was cold, dry and probably pre-cooked. As an Indian, I apologize to those who have eaten here and have been disappointed.

Very nice and welcoming. We started with the Royal platter as appetizers shared among 4. I ordered the chicken tikka masala. Nice and tender with good spice and garlic. Garlic naan was excellent. Don't forget to add a Cobra beer or two. Definitely a trip back! Bon appetit! Cheers!

Seit Jahren ist es mein Lieblingsinder. Die Gerichte authentisch und eine grosse Auswahl diverse Schärfen möglich und sogar schon einige tolle Abende mit Personen die grundsätzlich kein indisches Essen mögen verbracht, leider hat der Service stark abgegeben. Essen aber wie immer top.

Emocionado de estar comiendo en lo que era mi indio favorito en Basilea nuevamente. . . habiéndolo frecuentado por muchos años. . . . . ¡Qué gran decepción!No estoy seguro de por dónde empezar. Después de haberme sentado allí por un tiempo, tuve que llamar para que nos atendieran. . . . . llegaron los entrantes y el camarero fue super agradable. Puedo recomendar las samosas y pakoras vegetarianas. . . pero nada cerca de suficiente chutney de raita / mango, etc. . . los pappadums y chutneys ordenados nunca llegaron.Mi tikka masala llegó y, por la sequedad de la parte superior de los trozos de pollo, estaba claro que se había quedado fuera. . . la salsa era aburrida y al comer no fui el único en decir que sabía extraño. . . . el daal era un tazón de líquido. . el aloo gobi era grandes trozos de patata insípida con brócoli marchito, ¡casi ningún sabor, salsa y ningún signo de coliflor! Seit Jahren zähle ich zu den Stammgästen des Restaurants Mandir.Wenn ich das Lokal betrete, dann fühle ich mich wie zu Hause am Mittagstisch.In der Küche steht ein Team, das durch die konstante Qualität ihrer indischen Speisen täglich viele Stammgäste zufriedenstellt.Zu den abwechslungsreichen Tagesmenüs zählen: Verschiedene Suppen, abgestimmt mit erfrischenden indischen Gewürzen; das obligate Naanbrot, Fleisch- oder Fischspeisen mit pikanten Currys. Auf der Speisekarte findet man auch vegetarische Gerichte aus der ayurvedische Küche.

Solíamos comer en el Palacio Real cuando Gilbert trabajaba en mesas allí. Comimos una vez en The Mandir antes, pero no estábamos muy impresionados. Cuando Gilbert se mudó a The Mandir, nos animó a volver aquí y, francamente, comemos aquí para conversar con él. Él es realmente amable y siempre tenemos una velada encantadora.

Enjoying Basel and some delicious food but craving vegetables. Chose Mandir for dinner and had mix of vegetable and meat and shrimp dishes. All excellent. All of Basel meals are pricey but this is less than others. Waiter was very nice and spoke excellent English which helped us greatly. Highly recommend this venue if you like Indian foods.

Very nice staff and they would also take our orders on a Sunday evening at 9:30 p.m. Had a table outside with a nice view of the Spalentor. Clear recommendation!

Mandir is a nice indian restaurant in beautiful city of Basel. It's quite expensive place to eat. It's very decorated and staff is really helpful and nice. I really liked the food here. It's quite nice and beautiful place to sit and relax. It's not very crowded.service is really nice. I would recommend this place if you like Indian food if coat doesn't bother you.

Grande variété de plats, choix de bières pression, service rapide et proximité de la ville historique. Un peu de crampe un jour plus tard car je ne serais peut-être pas habitué à la cuisine indienne, mais en général ça va. Bonne option pour les végétaliens.

Food good, service unfortunately a disaster. After the starter we waited more than 1.5 hours for the main course and no one thought it necessary to say anything. When I asked several times, I was always told that it would come soon.

El restaurante cocina en la salsa de curry ya preparada de Patak y le cobra una fortuna. Los panes están poco hechos. Veo que hay comentarios positivos, pero lamentablemente no saben qué es la comida india. No recomendaría este restaurante a menos que quieras arruinar tu cena y billetera.

Very good food, nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. We hadn't booked (Saturday evening) but they still found a place, even though it was full. For dessert we had the homemade ice cream... delicious!!

Estuvimos en Basilea por semana y exploramos muchas articulaciones indias. Esto viene en la parte superior y fuimos allí 2 - 3 veces. Tiene buena comida, muy buen gusto y buena sentada y fácil de alcanzar. Aunque los fines de semana hay prisa, pero te encantaría esperar por una buena comida. Los precios son más o menos los mismos que en cualquier otro lugar.

Ich nahm dort ein Abendessen zusammen mit einem indischen Kollegen, der wusste, was zu bestellen und mit dem Kellner in seiner eigenen Sprache zu sprechen. Das Essen war lecker, der Service war irgendwie nicht organisiert, ich denke das Restaurant ist unterbesetzt.Und für die Betroffenen - nur das Huhn war Halal.

Very inconsistent. This is not the place for fine dinning or gourmet. But for casual eat out. I had a bad experience when I ordered some of the best dishes in house but was disappointed and left every thing. Price was it is cheap but I wish they could have asked more and given us good food. Generally I love to take picture but I was so much taken aback that did not click.

J'adore la cuisine indienne. En passant devant ce restaurant, j'ai eu envie d'essayer et je me suis arrêtée pour le déjeuner. Le restaurant est joli, le personnel très gentil et les prix très corrects. J'ai commandé le menu du jour avec des crevettes, l'assiette était jolie. Une demi-heure après avoir quitté le restaurant je me suis sentie mal avec une douleur à l'estomac. De 14h au milieu de la nuit je n'ai fait que rendre le repas du midi, horrible. Cette mauvaise expérience me laisse un goût plus qu'amère de ce restaurant, dommage. Il reste à espérer que ça ne se répète pas auprès d'autres clients, il est sûre que la plupart des clients à qui de telles choses arrivent ne le disent pas mais c'est pourtant important de le savoir.

Definitely not worth it. Slow & inefficient service (forgetting what we requested), bad food (including one of the dishes was semi-cooked) and when we politely told the owner that the meal wasn't very good, the response was it couldn't have been bad.

Mandir is almost part of Basel's cultural heritage and is traditionally furnished. The cuisine is of consistently good quality, but unfortunately there is no connection to spicy food. When I order spicy, I get mild. Be sure to try the Ayurvedic dishes, they are a special feature of the house.

We have often had food delivered from Mandir and it has always been delicious. Now we were in the area by chance and wanted to test the restaurant on site. Atmosphere ok, simple furnishings. We had a starter platter for 2 people for a (hefty) CHF 26.-. On the menu it was advertised as “almost everything.” What arrived was... a lot of fried onion rings in an unsalted breading, some flavorless cheese also fried, vegetable balls (delicious) and chicken also fried. Plus 2 indefinable sauces. I was really disappointed with the starter plate! Loveless combination of fried things with no taste. We knew the Mango Lamb Curry as the main course. It was delicious. Conclusion: order home what you know, yes. (Mango lamb curry, pangasius curry) We won't go to the restaurant again.

Nous avons été manger dans ce restaurant lors de notre bref passage à Bâle. Agréablement surpris par les saveurs respectés de la cuisine Indienne. Tout à été parfait tant dans nos assiettes que pour le service. Savoureux,goûteux,épicés à merveille. Un cadre typiquement Indien au cœur de la vielle ville de Bâle. Les prix sont corrects mais assez élevés au niveau des boissons.

Tasty Indian food home apart from home.

We ordered from the take away menu- about 50% less than sit down and the food was good- my son devoured the dahll (twice)and rice and mango lassi and my wife and i loved the samosa and chicken and lamb curry (all <$8-10 a dish).

Delicious Indian cuisine. Was there for a week in Jan 2018. A must visit place for Indian food lovers

Good food, good service, yummy curry.

Went after work on a Thursday. I was surprised that the place was also a hotel. The building is old world and spacious with nice Indian decor. The food is excellently presented, full of flavor and if you dig deep in to the menu and move away from the Tikka Masala or Madras there are some very different curry types with a dazzling spicey edge not seen on many Indian restaurants. PS more people should try Cobra beer. It’s better than most Swiss Lagers and brewed in the UK by the makers of the legendary Spitfire ale.

OH YES! i love this place. it sure is delicious and staff is friendly – but it gets even better. they have a summer take-away special (10.-) which i asked to get filled in my own container (zero waste) which sometimes leads to a funny face and can make things a bit complicated. not here! "oh, even better! like in india!" i cot a delicious meal and the biggest smiles, even from the guys in the kitchen. "in india we went to school like this!". you made my day. i will come back here, promised! such a great experience. thank you!

Wir waren während unseres Hotelaufenthaltes im "Hotel zum Spalenbrunnen" einmal abends gegen 21:00 Uhr dort essen. Da meine Frau und ich uns als durchaus erfahren in verschiedenen Bereichen der indischen Küche bezeichnen dürfen, können wir beide nach dieser Erfahrung von diesem Restaurant nur abraten, sofern man glaubt, hier authentisches und frisches Essen zu finden. Da wir offensichtlich recht spät dort waren und sich auch nur noch wenige Gäste im Restaurant befanden, drängte uns der Kellner lächelnd zur raschen Bestellung. Unser Essen war dann auch nach etwa 5-6 Minuten am Tisch. Das ist für mich schon das erste "No-Go". Wer einmal erlebt hat, wie in Indien frisches Essen - selbst Streetfood - zubereitet wird, glaubt niemals, dass unsere Gerichte frisch gekocht wurden. Geschmacklich war meines nicht allzu schlecht, allerdings ging es doch sehr deutlich an dem vorbei, was die feinen Zutaten auf der Karte versprachen. Die halbe Portion Hähnchen-Tikka meiner Frau (ganze 4 Stückchen) schmeckten ebenfalls nicht schlecht, aber auch nicht gut - und schon gar nicht, wie es einem angeblich "renommierten" Restaurant würdig sein sollte. Vielmehr wirkte alles wie portionsweise aus dem Froster geholt und schnell heiß gemacht. Für uns eine Mogelpackung; wie so vieles in Basel viel zu teuer. Viel Getöse, wenig Inhalt.
