Matt & Elly in Basel

I have to admit! We have rarely been so positively surprised. At first we were a bit put off by the reduced menu and the rather high prices. But the reception in the restaurant was very warm and you immediately felt welcome. The dishes were without exception excellent, very special creations (unknown to us before) and prepared with a lot of effort and love. The service was very accommodating, friendly and they also took the time to have a little chat and explain the creations on the plate. For a small flat rate you can get water at your discretion. A great culinary experience that we absolutely recommend!

Price performance is not right for me... - portions very small - Service was slow, not particularly attentive - but there were only two of us - I've never experienced having to pay for bread... - the food was tasty, but didn't blow me away...

Food and beer were very good. It was very loud. Overall, the restaurant has more of a bar atmosphere.

Elly is the most accommodating and warm-hearted hostess/owner I’ve encountered in a long time. It is always a pleasure to hang out there, no matter if you are just chilling with a beer or having a date night. We recently had our Valentine’s dinner there and it was gourmet quality, well-presented and everything tasted great. Wine recommendations were spot on as usual.

It was a fantastic evening. The food was excellent. The service was very friendly, she explained everything in detail. The wine and beer accompaniment was very harmonious. We were a larger party and they were very flexible with some of the guests' spontaneous requests. We would like to thank you very much for this 🍀

Spontaneously to Matt & Elly after work. I chose the veal bread roll with polenta and carrots. DELICIOUS! The macaron for dessert👍😍it's a shame the iced tea isn't available in bottles, I would drink it every day!

The atmosphere is so vibrant, combination of minimalism, industrial and very modern style at the same time! Amazing variety of beers - from hoppy IPAs to rich stout, just amazing! Cuisine is a unique fusion of flavors. We went for a surprise 4-course menu, superb combination of flavors! This restaurant deserves all the credits, made think whether I should change ratings for other restaurants I had reviewed 😅 Don’t miss!

Fine dining with friends! We had our Christmas dinner at Matt & Elly's and we (team and I) were thrilled. The very good food can be described simply and exceptionally 😀. With the right beer accompaniment from our own brewery, a little sip was included 😜. Great young innovative cuisine, great service and good atmosphere = Matt & Elly. Go there!

Super pretentious place which doesn’t make it for the money you pay! I payed 25 chf for one small plate of humus, 2 spring rolls, water and a coke. This is simply rip off! Not to say that they charge you 5 chf per person for 1L of tap filtered water.. The nice interior design and atmosphere it’s not worth it for the low quality food and the amount of money you have to pay for it. There are many other places in Basel with very good food and acceptable prices.

Varied range of beers with unusual varieties. It's worth trying out, you'll always be surprised at what flavors you can create when brewing. Both inside and outside invite you to linger. Children are no problem either, there is a play area and enough space if you are traveling with a stroller.

I don’t usually take the time to rate places but this was absolutely amazing. The beer was superb and the food deserves a couple Michelin stars. I’m coming back again for sure.

I don't normally write reviews, but this location is worth it. I was there with a colleague on Thursday last week. Starting at the reception, we could choose between a place at the counter right next to the open kitchen or a small, cozy table in the corner. From the food, which was seasonal and extremely varied, to the service, everything was excellent, everything was explained to us, how everything came from where... We had the small beer accompaniment which went extremely well with it. I wish the small team all the best and continued success

We only had a few tapas and drinks for an aperitif. It's certainly good, but too expensive. Example: 5.- for four tiny slices of cheese… as well as 3.50 for four slices of bread if you want extra. A bit of a shame when the bill arrives because the place is pretty and the staff pleasant.

Lovely place and local brewery with friendly owners offering a real culinary experience - price is very steep however. You need about three plates to fill you up (maybe 2 if you don't eat too much) and it'll cost you 80 without beer or any kinds of drinks (apart from water). At the same time, my friend said he had the best pasta here he's ever had in his whole life. Also be aware that they'll charge you 5 Francs for water served in the jug and will keep charging you with every (unrequested) refill. On the other hand, they don't ask for service charge. I had the Atlantic char, the venison and the oxtail tacos here. They were all nice dishes with locally sources organic ingredients and clearly a lot of thought has been put into them, the waiters will explain the ingredients to you in detail.

After having been to Matt & Elly for some beer tasting I proposed it for a joint wedding day anniversary celebration with our close friends. And we simply had a wonderful meal and time 🤗 We all chose the surprise meal which we thoroughly enjoyed. Starter, first and main The food and tastes were inspired by the culinary background of their South American chef and simply delicious! And all dishes worked well with either beer or wine. Dessert was very nice, I personally can recommend the cheese platter (beautiful choice of cheeses from small producers). And the service was outstanding, everyone so very friendly! 🤗 In summary, we will be back! 👍🏼👍🏼

Incredibly rude. Despite checking in at the bar, and being told to sit myself and someone would be right over, no one came to my table for over 15 minutes. It was NOT busy. I think the server was getting off and didn’t want to take on new customers, so she ignored me. I ended up leaving because they obviously did not want my business. I was excited about this place too but unfortunately it disappointed. Communication and service must be improved.

Hip place in Basel, lots of home-brewed beers to taste, the service is very attentive and when we asked, we received a lot of interesting information about the art of brewing - we highly recommend the place 🙌🏼

The spectacular flavors of both food and beer

Our server was extremely helpful, pleasant, and well-informed. Unfortunately I didn't get her name, but she had lovely curly hair. Both the beers and food were variable, with those that were excellent being truly stellar and others disappointing (although, in part, perhaps they suffered by comparison). The laffa and the rindstartar on a waffle were fabulous, but the eglifilets were rubbery and a bit bland, though stylishly presented. They were careful to ask about food allergies and have meat/fish/vegi and a la carte options for the multi course menu, which changes regularly. The others in my group had previously had tapas a number of times and very much enjoyed those options - I will go that direction in the future.

a real pearl near badischer bahnhof the restaurant matt&elly with the same named brewery near the railway station badischer bahnhof in basel is a real pearl in the district ‚erlenmatt‘. the menu is seasonal, unconventional and delicious: fine dining with a cosy neighborhood-atmosphere! great homebrewed beer, also available as beerflight with your menu-surprise, instead of wine. my favorite: tapasplates of my choice, 2, 4 or 8 tapas to share together or just to enjoy by myself. i appreciate and absolutly recommand this place, the philosophy and the hospitality of the crew! glad to have such a lovely place in my hood, cheers🍸

The service is particularly noteworthy, always friendly, attentive and adequately conversational and open. A place for everyone and a place for a sensitive understanding of art, which is expressed in the ambience. It represents a culinary education gap if you haven't been there yet. Top!

We went for dinner and had the surprise menu with beer accompaniment. The welcome and service was very friendly, the service was very quick and efficient and the beer and food were excellent. At the end we even bought beer glasses out of sheer enthusiasm. We recommend!

Beyond the hip music and trendy Portland, OR vibe there is finally a brewery with true IPAs in Basel. Their Session IPA and DIPA are both excellent. The Session IPA is a bit over the traditional upper bounds of a %ABV session. But, those wonderful notes of citrus and floral components from the Citra hops and the classical fruity notes from the Mosaic shine through with aromas that will take you to many different beer locations you’ve visited in the past. Tasting is tight. Tangerine and lime, balanced and followed up by a classical West Coast earthy characteristic that linger on the palate. Wonderful. Just wait until you try the NEIPA and DIPA variants. Great floral and fruit notes on the NEIPA. It’s an award winner and good beer. Not your trendy and overly sweet NEIPA concoction of extra sugar on the palate. Instead, an extra bite at the back end. Not too much, just enough. For those of you looking for a family relation to that Melvin 2x4 IPA from the US, look no further than the DIPA. Mid-amber color, with wonderful malt sweetness backed up with bitterness to balance. Not too sweet or bitter. Very, very good. So much I had to have a second and by far my favorite. This should be THE award winner in my books. Do they have food? Oh yea. Do I need to say more? But, for those of you that want another me-too Lager, move along. Nothing to see here. My worst fear is that the local Baselers won’t get it and I can’t stop in next time I visit.

Beautiful place, with beautiful people! It is a great food experience, together with very interesting beers. Either you live in Basel or you pass through it, you should visit Matt & Elly to enjoy a great time!

Very cozy and modern restaurant with various types of beer. Some of the staff only speak English. The prices are rather high but the beers are exceptionally good. We would definitely recommend the brewery.

Amazing, let this team surprise you 10 of 10. Food is great. Super quality, the exact quantity, environment and vibe could not be better. And the staff is nice and friendly. For sure, if you enjoy nice food, nice music, lovely place and good biers or kombucha, definitely you must try it.

Very hip, very cool, very tasty. Craft beer meets creative but fine cuisine. There is also wine for wine lovers. We all enjoyed the beers (okay, you don't need the desert and coffee beer every day) and the food was very tasty. Great, there is meat, fish, vegi/vegan. For me this is the future, this is how everyone will be happy. We were all very full, very satisfied. Price is more than fair, I would have paid 20 percent more.

We LOVE this place, and visit as often as we can at this convenient location. We most recently joined them for their 3 yr anniversary celebration - and boy what a feast that was!!! The food was truly innovative (think Michelin stars, sadly without the stars - yet?); the craft beers unique and exquisite in flavors; the atmosphere hip and friendly; the place packed, but nonetheless Denise and the staff did everything they could for all to have a great time, and all with a smile on their faces. CONGRATULATIONS and keep the GREAT food and beer coming😄

I had the 3 course menu for 65CHF and a 0.3L beer for 5.5CHF. Pros: - Super delicious food. Prepared with local products - Great service. Very friendly and hardworking Neutral: - Portions are rather small, as you would expect from very good restaurants. You shouldn't go in here with false expectations. - Prices are on the more expensive side but can be justified by the quality. Cons: - nothing

Very nice staff and great service, fairly overpriced dinner, with a 4 course set menu that you’ll hear when you’re seated at the table, we were not offered other options. Portions were small but great flavours. Definitely not a “brewery style” dinner but that’s why the “fine dining” is emphasised. Would not recommend the beer pairing, was too much beer over too short of a window with every course.

Very friendly and competent service. Nice ambience. We celebrated our company Christmas dinner there and felt very welcome, and special requests were also catered for without any problem. But the highlight was definitely the food. The ingredients and products were sustainably selected and prepared with passion. Happy to come back :)

Anyone who appreciates quality is absolutely at the right place with Matt & Elly and I have enjoyed every visit to the fullest, both culinary and human. The food is excellent and really has NOTHING to do with "frozen food" (as mentioned in a review below) - what counts here is the overall experience and that is very well done and an enrichment for Basel. If you're looking for free olives, peanuts and mainstream beer, you might want to head to Steinenvorstadt; ) I am grateful for a place in Basel that promotes the diversity of the gastronomy scene in Basel and enjoys my full appreciation. Keep it up and see you soon!

Modern chic restaurant based in the newly upcoming neighbourhood of Erlenmatt. We got served a 4-course with the possibility of getting beer pairing with every course (they are a brewery and a restaurant after all). The service was kind and helpful. Our waitress made sure every guest was satisfied by adjusting the meals to everyone's dietary restriction or preference. If I'm in the neighbourhood I'd gladly pay Matt & Elly a visit again.

Yesterday evening I spontaneously stopped by Matt & Elly's for the first time with two colleagues for a beer and then ended up at a mini dinner ("3-course") and mini tapas event. The atmosphere on the terrace is very welcoming and a place to spend wonderful summer evenings. As soon as we arrived we ordered 2 beers and 1 glass of wine. In Italy you automatically get a few olives and something to snack on. Ok we're not in Italy, let's leave the topic aside, but is it that difficult? It doesn't cost much. The Impact is HUGE! The beer and food were excellent. The portions were of high quality in the gourmet format. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. The tapas were accordingly mini-small and, according to my colleague, “unimaginative”, the wine was fantastic. A fourth colleague came later and treated himself to a beer that he paid for himself and was ultimately not taken off the bill, so he was charged twice. Because food was so scarce, we ordered 3 x 3 slices of bread. Every slice of bread with the price tag of CHF 1.00 = CHF 9.00! Seriously? My colleague ordered a mini portion of ChimiChurri and was fined CHF 1.50. Really?! Sorry, I would describe myself as a restaurant goer, I've traveled halfway around the world, but the price-performance ratio here isn't right at all. The bill overshadowed the entire mood and everyone left the beautiful place shaking their heads. Sorry, never again!

Been here twice and will go again. The best part is the fact that they source local ingredients so their menu changes every 2 weeks. The portions are not huge so you can try 2-3 dishes or order their 4 course surprise. I don’t drink beer so can’t give any opinion on the beer brewed in house.

Went there after work without any expectations as we’ve never heard about that place before. Well it was a GREAT surprise! First thing first I enjoyed the vibe which was pretty chill. Beers tasted good and knowing they are made few meters away from your table makes it a bit more special. Food was really good and seasonal, again, surprising. We were looked after by the owner and she was extremely kind. Will be back!

The personal was friendly and the food was tasty, but the price was exaggerated, even for Switzerland. I went for a two course vegan dinner, I paid 50 CHF and both dishes were very small. Not worth it at all. On top of that, they required more than 45 min preparing each dish. So I stayed there for more than two hours. I would not come again.
