Great Eritrean/Ethiopian food for a change.Courteous service,nice ambience,great food!

Regular haunt when in the area and still fantastic.

The best Ethiopean place in Geneva. The food was freshly made, the service was flawless. Be warned: the portions are huge. The two of us ordered the Zara Special, which is advertised as for one person, but we got perfectly full from it. The wine was pretty good too, and fairly priced. Will come back again!

Bad cook You have to repeat it 10 times and never smile, she always gets angry, for paying extra for rice or injera, every time or for a portion of vegetables, as if it were the first time I am regular...plus she was too lazy, for an extra injera she also made a lot of fuss about me...like always for no reason I had to give up,,,, and this is the only time where she was quick to understand and respond to tell me that she was very motivated for me to explain it in the comments...

We got takeout form here, the food was delicious but a bit on the spicy side if that's the sort of thing to bother you. Excellent value for money and it was ready fairly quickly.

I wanted to try a typical Ethiopian dish, and so decided to go here with a friend. I was not deceived. The royal zara is excellent, we have more than enough to last the rest of the day. The price is 25chf it seems to me, which remains affordable for the quantity served and the quality. The staff are charming and welcoming. If there was one negative review it would be the road noise, but unfortunately they had nothing to do with it. I will most likely return there.

Tap beer was obviously off - it tasted like grapes and was sour. I wouldn't recommend eating here, as there's plenty Ethyopian restaurants around, so no need to pick exactly this one.

Varied and good food in a minimalist environment

We have not yet tried all the Ethiopian restaurants in Geneva, so can't offer comparisons, but we like Zara for very good food, very friendly people, and by Geneva standards very reasonable prices. Most restaurants and bars in this area are trying to present either a chic or classy atmosphere. Zara is by comparison pretty basic. You are paying for good food, not manufactured ambience. We hope to return.

Its an ideal restaurant if you want to try a different type of food - euthopian and a different eating experience of sharing food in one basket. No cutleries use your fingers. The food is a lot and plenty of variety, so order with care. The place has simple and eye catchy decorations. No loud music ideal for those who like a good chatter while enjoying your meal. Its a small restaurant so a big group may need to call to make preparations of joining the tables.

Es un restaurante ideal si quieres probar un tipo diferente de comida: eutofia y una experiencia gastronómica diferente de compartir comida en una sola canasta. No hay cubiertos con los dedos. El lugar está a sólo 150 metros al norte de la principal estación de tren en la calle Rue de Lausanne y principales es fácil de encontrar. Es un lugar pequeño y parece bastante concurrida. Wir haben drei Vegetarier äthiopische Gerichte hier, die sehr gut vorbereitet (obwohl wir schon schöner Linsensalat Eintopf anderswo). Mein Mann mochte wirklich das Spinat Gericht und sehr genossen die Kohl mit Kartoffeln 1. Der Service war ein bisschen CVK schwächer (wahrscheinlich wegen Sprachproblemen) - brachte man mich Weißwein anstelle von rot und vergaß das Mineralwasser (einer der beiden bestellten). Auch das Ambiente ist irgendwie fehlt, obwohl wir wie die vielen Afrikaner, hingen in the Restaurant, hauptsächlich die Tee trinken und reden umgehen zu können. Trotz der ziemlich gut Essen, ich würde wahrscheinlich nicht wieder.

O local é simples e os atendentes são simpáticos e prestativos. O valor é justo, ainda mais se comparado a tudo em Genebra $$$Eles tem muitas opções vegetarianas e a comida é boa, com cuidado para as super hiper apimentadas. Como a cidade é multi cultural vale a experiência do restaurante =)

Wir haben uns in einem multikulturellen Gegend von Genf an einem Sonntag Nacht, zu müde ist, zu weit gehen von unserem Hotel in der Nähe des Hauptbahnhof. Wir sahen ein paar gute Bewertungen von diesem Ort, und obwohl wir lieber lokale regionale Speisen gefunden haben, hatte dieses äthiopische Restaurant etwas sehr leckeres Essen für hungrige Reisende. Es ist ein traditionelles, nicht besonderes Essen und sehr herzhaft und üppig.

hier fühlt sich wie man stürzte ein Kartenspiel. Patron zu beschäftigt mit Rauchen über Ihre Bestellung oder Ihren Zahlungseingang zu stören. Essen war okay, auch wenn zu sausen Gewürze; äthiopisch Essen kann voller Geschmack auch sein, wenn es nicht in mitmita und Berbere ertränkt. Ein weiterer lästiges Sache ist der Geruch von der Toilette, was man merkt beim sitzen. Nicht fantastisch ...

Das erste Mal war, in dem wir je probiert äthiopisch Essen ... So lecker genossen wir es wäre auf jeden Fall wieder kommen!

Une excellente adresse pour manger érythréen. Les plats sont copieux, la nourriture vraiment délicieuse et le service est correct, même si parfois un peu froid. L'ambiance est particulière, mais très authentique. Prix raisonnables pour Genève. Nous y retournons souvent et ne sommes jamais déçus !

Ich ging zu Zara speziell weil ich es hier auf Tripadvisor gefunden ... und ich war begeistert! Nicht (wie) zu teuer wie die meisten Restaurants in Genf und sehr gutes äthiopisch Essen. Das Personal war freundlich und hilfsbereit, das Essen war sehr lecker, und die Atmosphäre war cool und sehr locker. Ich hatte eine tolle Zeit beobachten alte Männer Karten spielen auf der Rückseite. :) Alles in allem ein schönes Erlebnis ... Ich würde auf jeden Fall wieder kommen!

I had a great experience here! Not (as) expensive as most restaurants around Geneva, and very good Ethiopian food. Staff was friendly and helpful, food was delicious, and the atmosphere was cool and laid back. I had a fun time watching old men play cards in the back, too. :) All around a lovely dining experience... I would definitely go back again!

Hier ist man fast in der Lehrbuch Definition von "Loch in der Wand". Ich war schon fast mit seiner Erscheinung abschrecken, aber dann habe ich mir auf TripAdvisor und entschieden uns zu gehen. Ich bin froh, dass ich das gemacht habe!Das Dekor ist minimalistisch, und damit meine ich nicht trendy minimalistisch. Aber das Essen ist sehr gut, und um sich einen guten Hauptgang und ein Bier für weniger als 25 CHF ist ziemlich ungewöhnlich in der Schweiz.Ich sprechen und verstehen fast kein Französisch, aber es war kein Problem, die Kellner & ich einfach beide hingewiesen und ein freundliches Lächeln - er war sehr zuvorkommend. Es gab eine Menge an Einheimischen Spielkarten, die Atmosphäre war sehr herzlich, freundlich und komfortabel.Wenn Sie irgendwo ganz und gar unprätentiös wollen, mit gut, der Preis war sehr gut Essen kann ich absolut empfehlen. Und wenn ich wieder nach Genf zurückkehren sollte, dann würde ich auf jeden Fall wieder.

Nous avons choisi ce restaurant totalement par hasard, la devanture annonçant "spécialités érythréennes" nous a tentés. Très bonne expérience ! Nourriture délicieuse, dégustée avec les doigts dans un grand plat en métal, personnel très prévenant et très gentil. Prix raisonnable pour Genève, une très bonne adresse !

Ich war noch nie zuvor äthiopisch Essen probiert bevor ich freue mich wirklich auf das Essen im Zara versucht gesucht hatten. Ich bin Veganer und mein Mann Vegetarier ist also wir hatten beide den vegetarischen Platte mit einer Auswahl an Speisen und injera Brot kommt.Die Portionen waren riesig und alles war sehr lecker. Wir ließen schließlich einige das Essen (was sehr selten ist) und es gab so viel war.Jedes Gericht war sehr lecker und die Dame, die uns auf Tellern serviert wird es richtig für uns und zeigte, wie es der injera das Essen zu Fakten zu essen in Mund.Ich würde dieses Hotel auf jeden Fall jedem empfehlen, der auf der Suche nach ein paar unterschiedlichen, leckeres Essen empfehlen.

Very much a locals' hangout which gives the place a sense of authenticity, but don't be intimidated as the staff are very nice, whether you're a local or not. The prices for the food may seem a bit steep at first (in fairness it's pretty much the norm for Geneva restaurants), but the portions you get very much match the price. I would also recommend getting an espresso there if you're looking for an afternoon coffee break.

Il ristorante si presenta veramente male e quindi non siamo neanche entrati. Si trova nei pressi della stazione, da fuori sembra vecchio e squallido. Il menù fuori dal ristorante è pure sporco e sbiadito. Alla fine, volendo comunque mangiare etiope, siamo andati al Nyala, che è stata un'ottima sorpresa!

I spoke no French, but luckily a couple eating helped me get a table and order. First timer eating Ethiopian and have no idea what I ordered! The wine was good, the food was tasty, but I had to stop eating it cause it was so salty my lips were pruning! Locals were in the back have some beers, playing cards, watching a game and very friendly. Decor needs work, but I liked the charm of the place.

Wie auch immer, Genf ist eine sehr teure Stadt, also diese Preise nicht außerhalb der Linie. Wir waren zu dritt und bestellten die Probe Teller für 2 für 50 Franken. Die Portionen waren ausreichend für zwei Männer, aber da die dritte von uns eine Frau, die nicht so viel zu essen wollte, konnte uns drei teilen sich in Ordnung die Platte für 2. Außerdem wollten wir wirklich nicht für 75 Franken für die Platte für 3 Personen. Es gab äthiopischen Männer essen, trinken Kaffee und Spielkarten, sodass man das Essen muss authentisch. Das Bad war ziemlich enttäuschend - ich habe schon schöner gesehen in Ländern der Dritten Welt. Kein Schloss an der Tür, irgendwie schmutzig. äthiopische Und essen Sie mit Ihren Händen und so haben wir möchten sie sauber. Ich hatte glücklicherweise Handdesinfektionsmittel, wir stattdessen verwendet. Based on existing Tripadvisor reviewers for Ethiopian food in central Geneva we tried Zara 2001 (reviewers wanted kitchen of Zara and decor of another). Having eaten Ethiopian food in Axum, Gondar, Lalibella, Addis and Kampala (Ug), the Zara food was easily as good and very well prepared and presented- for CHF25 a person. Even has bottled St George if you are missing it. Good sized portions, ask if you want the spice (we did) else maybe they think you're a lost tourist and leave it out. Es ist ein einfaches kleines Loch in der Wand ein Cafe/Restaurant und das Essen war sehr gut. Die injera war sehr lecker und gliedert sich perfekt mit den Aromen des vegetarisches Gericht ich gegessen habe. Wenn Sie ein Nichtraucherzimmer mit französisch-Lautsprecher, es ist etwas zäh wie die Kellner am Tag gingen wir sprachen kein Englisch, aber es zeigte und uns von kan und wir haben es wirklich genossen. Ich würde wieder dort übernachten, wenn ich noch in Genf war!

From all the ethiopiant restaurant this one is the one I prefer for the food quality.The ambiance is simple and the service as well but polite which is the most important.The choice for wines is simple, I can recommend a south african wine which is very nice.The prices are normal and not too expensive for my point of view.If I go back with friends who wants to try that knid of food I would bring them there.

To be pedantic, I think this restaurant is probably Eritrean rather than Ethiopian, but they are closely linked and as well as Eritrean food they do have Ethiopian (and I think some Indian) dishes.The Paquis district is what is often euphemistically described as edgy - its poor (by Geneva standards), it includes the red light district, and its home to a lot of immigrants many of whom have come from Eritrea, and a few of whom have set up restaurants. The Paquis is also home to a few 4 star hotels, one of which I was staying in. I suspect a lot of the visitors to those hotels would turn up their noses and walk past the Eritrean restaurants, but if they do they are missing a treat. To be fair my hotel receptionist did recommend Zara 2001 to me.This is no fancy restaurant, but it seemed to me to be clean and its certainly comfortable and friendly. A small number of locals from the Eritrean and other communities seem to come here just to drink and socialise. To me that just added to the experience and the laid back atmosphere.I tried a special plate to sample both "Tibsi" (spicy lamb stew) and "Zegni" (spicy beef stew) together with lentil, spinach and other side dishes. The stews are served on several "injera" (a kind of spongy pancake) and more "injera" accompany it. You eat the dishes with the injera - no knives, forks and spoons, but as they say when in Eritrea (or even an Eritrean restaurant) do as the Eritreans do !! The food was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the Tibsi, which is prepared with chilli, onions, tomatoes and the special herb and spice mix (berbere). Swiss beer seemed the best thing to drink with the meal, though wine is available. By Geneva standards the food here is reasonably priced.A real revelation. I'd never eaten Eritrean food before, but it was a taste sensation. It may not look much from the outside, but go inside and you will enjoy a good meal.

I ate there a few times and then the on the night of my last visit I had trouble finding the ladies room and ended up in the kitchen. Don't think they would pass a health inspection. The food tasted great every night. Their ingera is great but I don't think I would go back.
