Yesterday I ended up in Zhong Hua, quite by chance and hungry, where I (as a Zurich resident) had never been and didn't expect much. The restaurant was well occupied, but I still got a pleasant table (I was alone). The Phnom Penh-style noodle soup was a revelation: rich, spicy, tasty and cheap! And all of this in a calm, neutral atmosphere and with courteous, friendly service. I left very satisfied and am looking forward to the next time.

I visited for a take away whilst staying nearby. I order from the vegan menu - tofu Szechuan with rice, and tofu with black mushroom and rice (pictured). There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant and it was full, staff were helpful and patient with my mixture of German and English language. Food was ready when advised and was absolutely delicious.

It is located on Zehringerstrasse, next to the lively Niederdorfstrasse in the Old Town. Although there are cars on this road, there are not many people passing by at night, so it may be a little scary to walk alone. The inside of the restaurant is decorated like a Chinese restaurant, so it's relaxing. It seemed like there were more local Swiss people than tourists. The menu has a wide variety. There is a chain Chinese restaurant in Zurich, but it seems like the food here is made by Chinese people, so I think the food is better than other restaurants. My favorite is the sour hot and sour soup (7CHF). Main dishes are quite large, so I think lighter dishes such as 2 spring rolls (7.5CHF), 5 shumai (14.5CHF), and wonton noodles (22.5CHF) are suitable for Japanese people.
