Impressive dinner with very varied dishes. Greatly arranged. The drinks in particular are unforgettable.

Absolutely recommended, everything fits, we look forward to a new one every time.

Food/Drinks: In my opinion, original and very tasty drinks. I have a Garden of Eden (highly recommended). When I ate, I was partly impressed with the taste (chicken lollies, lamb chops) and partly a bit disappointed (vegetables in beer batter are nothing special for me, but it's a matter of taste). The only thing that really bothered me was that the meat (lamb chops, my colleague's diamond steak) was served almost cold. I found the prices to be at the upper limit, especially the rather small lamb chops for CHF 25. Service: I found the service staff friendly if a bit distant and stressed. I would have appreciated a little more communication, but the two service employees were very busy. Location: A dark, cozy location with an open kitchen (behind glass). Great eye-catchers (great lights, decorations, etc.). My parking recommendation: Storchen Parking Conclusion: I think the concept is successful, but I would like the food to always arrive at the table hot. I would use a little less dry ice because in my opinion the show effect fizzles out a bit (it happens a bit often for me). Still a great location in a prime location with good food.

Price-performance ratio is not right at all. In London the atmosphere is much more breathtaking, the food/drinks are much more creative and we would have paid at least 100 francs less there.

A place for fancy and good tasting drinks, but not for dining. The food didn't match the same experience as the drinks.

The service, ambience and especially the drinks are really great, really an experience. We mostly enjoyed the food, but we've eaten better for the price. But the Alchemist is definitely worth a visit.

I spent a very nice evening. The food was very well prepared and the individual dishes and drinks all tasted good and different. I had the 5 course menu with accompanying drinks. The 'chemistry' concept is really fun. I will gladly come again.

Overall very nice experience! Must go place in Basel. It brings out that pharma feeling and all about mysterious cocktails 🍸 and food is quite good.

Special experience, share the food in the group, small different dishes, like tapas. You order once then eat then order again. At first we though we would never be full, but there is a time where almost everybody had enough. The quality of the food is really really good! From salad to steak and dessert! Drinks are ok. Did noz try all the fancy ones on the card.

We had the big surprise menu with cocktails. The food is good, the cocktails are a match. But it's very expensive and I don't think the price matches what you're getting.

We had our Christmas dinner at the Alchemist with 20 people and we were all thrilled. The food was very good and served in an original way, the service was friendly, prompt and uncomplicated. We were able to mix our own cocktails in the basement during a meal break, great!

This place used to have its magic, it’s completely lost now. All we experienced on December 11th was being totally ignored by the waiter. Very disappointing.

The food itself was super tasty. The only thing that was a bit inappropriate was the fact that it was split up between each other in a group, and the 3-course menu was missing... Nice cook ;)

Great for drinks! The food is not amazing, very few options and rather common dishes. Is you are looking for culinary experience is not the place. Atmosphere was great, the place is very nice and drinks are really fun and tasty.

The discriminatory behavior of a service worker was absolutely wrong. We were told that the dining area was completely booked. Since we had a drink instead, we noticed how others still managed to get a seat. It was also made difficult for us to order and pay for something.

The concept of the alchemist is super cool but unfortunately we expected a little more research and consistency in the dishes with the tasting menu. It’s a shame, the potential is really there and the cocktails are delicious but the bet is not completely successful…

I was already overwhelmed when I found the drink. If I liked beer, then 8dl for 10 CHF would probably have been the choice. I didn't find any of the other drinks appealing. Either I didn't like the content or I wasn't ready for a pumpkin cocktail. In addition, dry ice, soap bubbles and cotton candy are fancy, but cannot justify the expensive price. Additionally, if I go to a higher priced place after a visit, I don't want to smell like a French fry afterwards. All of my clothes smelled extremely like a deep fryer, that's an absolute no go!

We were a group of 12 and ordered the suprise menu with food and drinks that were paired with each other. It was an experience like no other. The food was delicious and the drinks were paired perfectly. Highly recommended

The coolest bar in Basel by far! Very special drinks and cozy ambiance. You can roll the dice and let your luck choose the drinks for you. We got a gin/chestnut on dry ice and whiskey/chestnut/ bubbly combinations. Both were good! Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Terrible, veges is not cooked through and I feel like eating tree root. Update: Went few times recently and the lunch taste much better than last year.

Magnifying glass, tweezers, dry ice – definitely a very special experience. Completed by a super friendly and super competent companion. The Opus Magnum menu is a pleasure from A to Z, rounded off by the “special” drinks from cotton candy to syrup, from gin (admittedly a bit dominant, but that suits me...) to vodka. Mix, mortar – the symbiosis is ready. Welcome to the lab!

Great restaurant. Great and entertaining food. You have to be prepared to be surprised with culinary delights and that's exactly what makes the whole thing interesting. It's worth the experience. Impressive taste experience. High quality. Everything fresh and great flavor combinations. The atmosphere is wonderful. The drinks are very tasty and great to look at. Price performance is great when you consider that everything is fresh, seasonal and homemade and the restaurant has its own herb garden in the region. We as consumers are happy to support concepts like these. Thanks for the great experience.

An impressive experience for the palate and for the eyes We took the 5-course surprise menu (CHF 79, including water) and didn't regret it! Every course was excellent. You will be accompanied throughout the evening with always new dishes. If you are not sure whether you like this cuisine, I recommend a visit at lunchtime. A complete lunch is served for CHF 22, including water. Absolute price-performance winner!

Love their food! Always a vegan, a vegetarian and a meat option. Take away over lunch, to me, is the best value for money in Basel - and they have reusable lunchboxes <3 But the interior design in Alchemist is quite special, so can recommend that too

We have already eaten at the Alchemist twice and are still enthusiastic about the concept (food sharing, seasonality and regionality). The service is very friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is totally appealing. Highly recommended if you're not into 0815.

An atmospheric establishment in the “Alchemist” style, unusual, quite tasty and interesting. The service is very friendly. You can choose a menu for two (it will be a surprise what they bring to you) but we chose the dishes ourselves. Unusual and at the same time simple vegetable rolls (I really liked them), rice, mushrooms 🤤, bread, two types of meat. It may seem like very small portions, but surprisingly we were full and satisfied. At the end we drank a cocktail with non-alcoholic rum, which you need to prepare yourself and a very cool presentation of the cocktail in a flask 🍸 If you are looking for something unusual and interesting, then this is the place for you. 🙌

The food is good unfortunately not warm but it is overpriced for what you get. Atmosphere is cool but the personal could be a bit friendlier. Whit sayings like "did you finally find something to order", not very nice though. The drinks look cool and interessting, that was fun.

If you're on a diet, it's ideal. If you want to eat, another restaurant is better. Having spent almost 500.- (there were 5 of us) we went to eat somewhere else.

First of all, the food was delicious, no question. The cocktails were also fun to look at with the dry ice and the cutlery was really entertaining. However, the menu was very confusing and not clearly labeled with, for example, vegetable side dishes, starch side dishes, fish and meat. It took us a long time to put something together. I think you almost have to use one of the three menus to simplify it. But since each of us has allergies or doesn't like certain things, we decided to select each one individually. What I find really exorbitant, however, are the prices. A bowl of sprout salad 15.- a small side bowl of spaetzli also 15.- and ribs which were already cold because of the cold tomato sauce and most of them were a bone for 19.-. That's a total of 49 euros and the men at the table weren't full either. Of course you can order... but another 1-2 things from the menu at that price? Conclusion: Food is delicious but clearly too expensive for what it is. I'm sorry.

Cool atmosphere, creative way to create the drinks, the food was delicious and the quantities were sufficient (we had the menu for 79 per person). Price ratio within the framework that one would expect in Basel. There is a deduction for service. Unfortunately the staff is simply too inattentive. When we had finished eating and the end of the day was slowly approaching, the staff were sitting around on chairs in the other part of the restaurant and we were hardly noticed anymore. We would have liked to have another drink, but then decided to pay.

I saw the restaurant on Instagram and really wanted to go. Unfortunately the visit was a disappointment. The food and drink menu was very confusing. When we had this explained to us, it was clear to us that you had to order several dishes (2-3 per person), a bit expensive but the two of us ordered 4 dishes. According to the advertising photos, we expected beautifully prepared dishes with dry ice. We received 4 tiny potties which cost between 12 and 15 Fr. each. In one there were 6 half (i.e. 3!!!) falafel with some sauce for 12 Fr. Which is totally overpriced. The other dishes were also tiny and extremely expensive for the quantity and also not really particularly tasty and not particularly prepared. The drinks also cost a fortune (non-alcoholic gin with syrup costs 18 fr.!) However, this was beautifully prepared so that you can mix it yourself.

Interesting concept, but not fully thought out and even less fully implemented. Staff is almost more confused about the drinks and concepts than the guest. Either simplify everything or make the concept so clear to the employees that they give the guests the feeling that it makes sense. Specifically: the diced drinks taste absolutely random. The dishes have different main ingredients than those labeled and hardly have a common thread, and the portion size also seems to be arbitrarily determined. Positive: the dessert looked good and tasted great, and the meat was also great (albeit too cold).

There are some very good cocktail bars in Basel. This is NOT one of them. It looks stylish, but food is hit and miss, and their approach to drinks is patronising. There are 7-8 cocktails to choose from (none of which are what I would want to choose and the ones I tried were just okay and not worth the steep price tag). And then their pride is that customers can throw the dice (literally) and randomly create a cocktail, which is of course not likely to turn into a very good cocktail (and almost seems a little insulting to people who spend their time coming up with good cocktails.) So, in a nutshell, what summarises the place well is “style over substance”.

The cocktails are such a fun experience! We celebrated a birthday and the Alchemist perfectly fit with our group of Harry Potter and D&D loving nerds. The appetizers were a bit expensive for what you get. So eat somewhere else and get your drink on here!

I had dinner at the Alchemist with a friend on March 3rd, 2023 and the experience was great! The concept of this restaurant is very cool, the service was very friendly and attentive and explained everything to us in detail. You can mix your own drinks, the food is served in small portions because it's meant to be shared and this restaurant is definitely not run of the mill! Price performance was okay, not too expensive and not cheap. I definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!

It was an experience to roll the dice for a drink. The appetizers were also delicious.

I thought the concept and the location were quite ok. The menus are confusing. The offer is rather small. Vegetarian and vegan possible. Food is good, except for the two desserts. Very expensive, you don't get much for your money. We were all still hungry... Location right on the Schifflände, so easy to reach by public transport. Stork parking nearby.

Probably more a 4.5 than a 5 starts but did not wanted to give a 4 starts and bring down the rating Not for every day dinner but more for special occasions given the tab will be 60 CHF per person , nice ambiance (loved the pharmacy old shop décor ) Food was generally cooked well (meat could have been tender) and well presented, however portions were small given is more considered a tapa place, so you will have to order 3-4 dishes per person Staff friendly and knowledgeable Bonus-hint: Beer very good and reasonably prices even for Basel

Very unique concept and very well operated. I like the idea of the smaller sharable portions that will give you the chance to try many unique recipes and great food. The drink cocktail with the dice rolling is very original idea and worth the try.

If you want to try something different, you're definitely in good hands there. If you don't like sharing dishes with others, you probably won't. The food is tasty. But the prices and quantities are okay. The staff are very helpful and explain everything very well.

Pros: prime location. Warm, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Food concepts are interesting if you’re open to try out strange combination of ingredient things. Cons: the food was not impressive. Some experimental cuisines go too far that it taste really odd. The hefty bill also does not justify for the value of the meal. Maybe I’m being picky but with 100 CHF per pax, there are equally good if not better options around.

Amazing experience with top notch food selection, innovative cocktails & best quality food. Much more than a meal but a fantastic culinary experience in a cosy, welcoming setting with great service.

In itself a beautiful bar with very friendly service. We had some of the special cocktails, but unfortunately I have to say that they weren't balanced and some of them didn't taste like anything. That's a real shame because the idea itself is a very good one! We didn't have any food, so no judgment on that.

Super experience, really very original idea and the food and cocktails were excellent. At the beginning it would be useful to give a short explanation of the menus, for example because they are made up of several small portions. An announcement as to whether something is vegan would also be good. When asked, according to the waitress, everything is vegan except for the meat and fish. Nevertheless, the spaetzle, for example, tasted like eggs and there was feta on the menu. In summary: It might be a bit confusing on your first visit, but the taste and the concept simply deserve 5 stars!

I've already been to the restaurant and love the idea of ​​making special cocktails. But when you ask which cocktails the gentleman from the restaurant would recommend and you get the answer "You should read the menu and choose something yourself" I was extremely disappointed. I read the card, but wanted to be surprised - unfortunately not possible. And we didn't really like the various cocktails either :/

We really enjoyed the experience here! The modern fusion cuisine offered here is very creative and varied in taste. The staff was also very friendly and took a lot of time to explain everything to us. The philosopher's stone 4-course menu surprise with cocktail pairing was a complete delight. Gladly again 👍

Today, Thursday, July 28th, 2022, in the evening I went to the Alchemist Essen very spontaneously with three other people. I found the concept and the ideas exciting. The quality of the food was very good. We ordered a lot of dishes in a jumble and were able to taste the entire menu. Because the prices were very high, despite the concept, there is one star less. Unfortunately very disappointing: + very friendly staff + very cool idea in principle + Delicious lemonade & desert - Cocktails other than presentation not special - No concept when it comes to food - fusion should also have a concept; In addition, spices were often missing - Staff started cleaning up the restaurant during the 2nd course (of 4) (it was quite empty for a Friday at 9:30 p.m.) which really annoyed us because we came for a cozy after-work meal

In terms of quality, it's some of the best in a long time. Finally a team that does gastronomy the way it should be. Exciting, tasty, interactive and great service. An all-round perfect experience.

Short version: Terrible drinks, polite staff, rude owner. Long version: Been there twice. First time we ordered multiple dishes and gin tonics. The dishes were mostly mediocre and the gin flavourless no matter what spices you mix in by yourself. Second time I died for an Campari soda which the owner refused to accept (even though Campari is on the drink card) and kept talking over me about how things there are done differently and should order their own version. I ordered it and it was terrible. The only good thing is the music, which can be loud, and the staff who is very friendly.

Great great great! Went there on Saturday around 2:30 p.m., outside of peak times, and therefore had no problem getting a table without a reservation. It was also nice and quiet. What originally drew us here was the facility. As soon as you walked past it gave you an interesting, cozy impression, which was then confirmed. The construction site in front of the door was quickly forgotten in the great atmosphere. The service was also very friendly and attentive. We couldn't think of much from the descriptions on the menu, so we just opted for the 4-course menu plus tried each of the non-alcoholic cocktails. A great cross section. Everything was an eye-catcher, tasted great and was perfectly portioned. What's more - mixing some of the drinks yourself, trying out all the little things and sharing them, that was a lot of fun! I particularly liked the Virgo Folium Rubrum, the pea puree and the chocolate synthesis. In general, however, I can only recommend choosing something and being surprised. If you're looking for something for a special occasion or just want to experience something new, you're in good hands here.

A really fancy bar to have even more outlandish drinks. Certainly Ann experience. The snack food is nice too. The dinner food seems to be a fusion of Indian and Asian, not entirely my taste but everything was presented very nicely and certainly worth a visit!

An interesting concept with some great cocktails and some interesting fusions of food - some of which were fantastic but others didn’t quite hit the mark. The majority of the menu is vegetarian, so easy for non-meat eaters! Don’t be put off by the scaffolding outside, it’s open and has a great bustling restaurant inside.

+ food was great and really tasty + presentation of food and drinks - service was rude and not helpful - therefore the whole experience was bit too expensive I asked to have a non alcoholic cocktail. The problem was that the two drinks they offered were either not vegan or had ingredients in it i don't like. I tried to ask for one cocktail either leaving out the non-vegan ingredient or having an alcoholic cocktail replaced with the non-alcoholic spirit. Neither of those options were possible. Which is super disappointing for a restaurant/ bar who advertises it's good cocktails. This gave me the impression that either people responsible for the bar value their cocktail recipe over their customer or are just not able to adapt a recipe slightly. Service wasn't really helpful with that process so at the end i stayed with water because i didn't want to discuss this further... Because of this experience i wouldn't come back for a meal, just the good food alone doesn't justify the high price. sorry.

A slightly different concept, similar to tapas but without being Spanish. All the small dishes were very tasty and good. The service was friendly and attentive.
