Berghaus Niesen Kulm in Reichenbach im Kandertal

The peculiarity and main advantage of this place is its location on the mountain with magnificent views. Pros: Beautiful views, delicious food, reasonable prices, plenty of tables. Cons: for me, the place looks like a canteen, no charm except for the barrel in the photo. So we booked a table in advance for my birthday (of course we didn’t know what the weather would be like) and arrived in the middle of a snowstorm. Naturally, there was no need to think about beautiful panoramas. So we had to look at the interior. I think the owners need to think about this as there is absolutely nothing inside the restaurant! Wasteland. I would add indoor plants and illumination and it would be much nicer and more interesting. Then the service..I don't know what style or role this place has. But as for me, the word “restaurant” already speaks about itself and presupposes a certain atmosphere and service. We got the impression that we were eating in a tavern. Maybe this is Swiss simplicity?! But it was absolutely inappropriate. We saw many restaurants here, but the service there, although Swiss, was on a completely different level. Three stars for the service only because they didn’t wait long) But the appearance and presentation were completely missed. The restaurant has a souvenir shop.

I was totally thrilled by the Niesen summit, the view, the mountain house with a great restaurant (view of the mountains all around), very good food, the cozy rooms to stay overnight and the cultural event.

The experience with the Berghaus Niesen-Kulm restaurant was a bit mixed. The staff is mostly friendly. With exceptions. So people at the table directly next to us asked us several times whether everything was okay, but never with us. We ordered gluten-free dishes. We were not given gluten-free bread at either dinner or breakfast. Only when we asked did my partner get a piece of bread. Although the table was even marked gluten-free. At breakfast, bread is usually a mainstay and one might expect this to be delivered automatically. The vegetarian meal at the three-course dinner in the evening resulted in severe flatulence for both people. The kitchen may be more focused on meat dishes. There is a large selection, including the theme evenings. The cultural part was excellent with the three live bands. The overnight stay is also a special experience. It's a shame that the food and service are mixed. Unfortunately we can no longer come over for dinner. A pity.

Amazing location, great service Shared bathrooms in some rooms (including the one we used) and no balcony are minor downsides. Meat fondue and a great buffet breakfast were included for us. The restaurant has incredible views depending on the season (doubt you'll see much in winter due to daylight times) Make sure you do the short walk from the hotel to the peak for incredible sunset and sunrise views.

Beautiful place but zero service and unfriendly the job of a waitress is hard I know it too well and the annoying customers too But when I'm wrong I apologize and I do my best to ensure that the customer leaves pretty much happy.

We were served quickly and very friendly. The food (Älpler and fries) was excellent, I would even say they were the best Älpler I have ever eaten in a restaurant! High quality food at a fair price. Gladly again!

We experienced two young waiters, around 13/14 years old, as holiday jobbers, who served drinks with great commitment. Your manner and friendliness have raised the overall Niesen package by 2 stars......

Incredible experience! Great breakfast for all tastes! In the evening we enjoyed a Chinese fondue (you can also eat vegetarian without any problem). The employees are friendly and the experience was fantastic!

Friendly service and a varied menu. Price-performance ratio is good, the portions are large. I wasn't particularly impressed by the ambience, it seems rather bare, cold and a bit loveless, but this is definitely a matter of taste. Cleanliness, even in the toilet area, was great despite being busy. My downside is that unfortunately the food served wasn't really warm. (But I also have to give a big compliment to the serving staff, when we complained at the end we were offered a piece of cake, great!) I also always find it “disturbing” when I order a Cola Zero and receive a copy of it; I would really appreciate better communication here. Nevertheless, the Berghaus is recommended and offers a lot for its guests.

He was awesome, took part in the entire service, helped everywhere, at the same time he had a calm tone with the employees and a very friendly manner with the guests, very well positioned and fully motivated! Super nice ride on the Niesen. Staff friendly and organized/motivated. The team is doing a great job :-) The rooms are incredibly beautiful. The view is simply a dream. When the weather is nice, early risers will be rewarded with a great view/atmosphere. The dinner and breakfast were very tasty and varied.

The start at 4 p.m. at the valley station on September 1st, 2023 was a success. The super friendly staff at the checkout cannot be beaten. The trip on the Niesen is a pure experience. We (8 people) were looking forward to our sunrise arrangement. The buffet, whether dinner or brunch the next morning, is simply great (this praise goes to the kitchen). All CH products and practically everything from the region. All presented and served by real hosts! Massimo and his team, you are great and cannot be surpassed in terms of friendliness. Grazie mille! Sneeze, again and again!

Such amazing nature and such horrible service :(( Never seen such arrogance, even from French waiters. As soon as you start speaking English, expect 0 service. They wouldn’t speak French either, even though it’s mandatory at school across Switzerland. Food is not bad. Bad coffee for 6 francs, 1 small piece of bread 1.7 francs. Ridiculous

It was with great anticipation that we invited our friends to one Niesen trip including Niesenbuffet à discretion invited for July 12th, 2023. Unfortunately the weather wasn't good, for which no tribute will be paid to them! But…. : The Niesenbuffet à discretion leaves a lot to be desired. We were very disappointed with this buffet. Rich salad buffet was good and a good selection Tomato and plum soup is also very tasty The following meals were cold to lukewarm and didn't meet our expectations: Piece of pork kidney fried in one piece cold and tough Mince patties lukewarm Chicken breast lukewarm Seasonal risotto lukewarm Cheesecake lukewarm Noodles lukewarm Sweet potato fries lukewarm to good Seasonal vegetables cold - lukewarm and very bland All plates were cold! (despite plate warmer) The food warming device has failed! no dessert for this poor offer. For an amount of CHF 52.00 p/p for the Niesenbuffet à discretion I expect better conditions! Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this offer and we are very disappointed. Reply to Berghaus Niesen-Kulm Mr. Nicolas Overney: Thanks for the answer, it was always the same 2-4 years ago! It's no use in terms of heat if the warming devices are cold, which someone from the service should notice (the plates were cold too!)

As a Bernese (60), I went to Niesen for the first time. The experience begins at the valley station. Very friendly staff. I booked the evening trip with Fondue Chinoise. What awaited me at the summit was fantastic. The weather, the view, the food and the friendly staff were a great experience. I can recommend it to everyone.

On a cloudy afternoon we wanted to eat something delicious. The restaurant was more than half empty. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to sit at the back of the panorama hall. The boss (Italian guy), nervous and unfriendly, shooed us away to a table at the front of the hall. Afterwards, part of the panorama hall was raised, mopped and cleaned, between the guests! We were a bit surprised then. We've never seen anything like this before. Now about the food: We ordered a cheese slice, a daily menu, wine and water. Unfortunately, the cheese slice was not fully fried and there were still unmelted cheese crumbs in the lower part. How can this happen? Unfortunately, the spaetzli from the daily menu were very dry and almost too hard, which isn't exactly professional either. Everything was roughly prepared, so it wasn't easy on the eye, just to stave off hunger. We were a bit disappointed and can't recommend the restaurant. Experience has shown that direct complaints are of no use, but everyone can read it here.

We were here for the “Echt Swiss” buffet evening. A great located restaurant with a huge. Terrace. The interior has a huge panoramic window around the entire new building area. We were even able to enjoy a sunset from the table. The selection at the buffet was huge. Soup, many different salads and also some main courses that you could make yourself as much as you liked. Very friendly staff. It was a really nice evening with you. Many thanks.

Must visit place in Switzerland 🇨🇭. Very costly but great.

The review refers to a brunch with 6 people. We reserved brunch in advance. A table was prepared for us, but when we arrived we were assigned another table that still had to be set. When we arrived at half past ten, some of the buffet offerings had already been used up (e.g. the eggs were cold, the fruit salad was empty, some milk and juices were empty and there were no cereal bowls left). All items were only replenished upon individual request. The buffet was cleaned up at 11:00 a.m. and when we wanted to get a coffee from the machine at 11:10 a.m., the service staff very rudely pointed out that there was no more coffee, since it was already 10 after 11: 00 p.m. would be. We were neither told at the beginning that the brunch ends at 11:00 a.m. nor was it noted on the reservation. In total we paid 385 CHF including the ride on the Niesenbahn. We were not satisfied with the price/performance ratio and especially with the service.

We thoroughly enjoyed the brunch, which lacked NOTHING (!)! Despite the large crowds (Saturday), everything went like clockwork - you almost had the impression that everyone was just waiting for us. 😄 Without exception, very personable, friendly staff were encountered! Quality of all food and drinks 1A! Wonderful - we'll be back! 👍

The historic Kulm Inn offers a very special overnight option. Most rooms have a shower/toilet on the same floor and are equipped with Hüsler beds. The hosts are friendly and helpful, the cuisine is almost too lavish and oversized. In general, the spacious rooms are rather unattractive for a mountain restaurant. Unfortunately, the alpine charm is somewhat lost.

My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary on the Niesen. We booked the sunrise package, which was really beautiful. Special thanks to Massimo Formicola, he gave us a very warm welcome and always made sure we weren't missing anything! At this point, thank you very much for the romantic decoration at our breakfast table. We can only warmly recommend a trip to the Niesen.

We celebrated a birthday in the restaurant. The team had put in an incredible amount of effort. That was really nice!

It's a shame that you can't give more stars for the location. The view is phenomenal. The coffee and cake were ok, but the spaetzle with raclette cheese gratin was exceptional. The staff was very, very friendly and accommodating. The only thing that irritated me was the payment system. Employees are supposed to pay with yellow wristbands - but they didn't show themselves to me. But I still managed to pay...

It's a place only locals go to, so English isn't spoken and the food is quite expensive. The taste is just so-so and the steak is tasteless!

We spent one night in the Berghaus. The visit is worth it! The room was small but very clean. There was a shared shower and a shared toilet. The overnight stay is a great mountain experience. We were lucky with the weather and saw a lot: sneezing shadows, sunset, sunrise. The dinner (fondue rustique) was excellent, as was the Sunday brunch. There was nothing to complain about. However, my expectation was that we, 22 people, would spend the evening and morning alone. In the evening the restaurant was very full. There were a lot of day guests on site. Overall, full recommendation.

Very nice place and I really enjoyed the game food. The service from a young guy (approx. 12) was excellent, he was so friendly and did a really great job, I hope the tip got through to him too :)

It's worth having brunch early. Fewer people. The view is fantastic when the weather is good.

A wonderful view and a very clean mountain. Certainly not cheap for German holidaymakers but definitely worth it. The ride on the cogwheel train up the slope was really fun. The food on the outside terrace was very tasty and looks delicious. Unfortunately, the service was overwhelmed on a Sunday (most likely due to a lack of staff). As soon as you sat in the shade, messages with your hand were overlooked. Anything in the sun was preferred. After waiting half an hour, I had to decide to go to the waitress so I could finally pay. But overall the stay there was very pleasant.

Unfortunately, the staff was a bit overwhelmed by the huge rush and the Rösti came to the table lukewarm at best, otherwise it would have been very good.

Super nice location. But staff was not so friendly (they started cleaning and removing the table cloths from beneath our plates as we were still being served) and it was hard to know the opening hours. We hiked our way up from the foot of the mountain and came up around 16 o clock ready to have some food, only to find out they only serve "proper food" until 16. We could still have some snacks but it would have been nice to know this beforehand.

Pretty mountain restaurant on the Niesen

Magnificent view. And with this view, starting the day with a delicious brunch is simply great.

Hiked up the mountain and stopped here for a full blown lunch before taking the funicular down. I just moved from the US so this is foreign to me but it’s an amazing outdoor area to chill with friends after a hike and leisurely enjoy the views and company. We were too full and didn’t hike down haha! Honestly wasn’t expecting much at all but was pleasantly surprised! Service wasn’t great - couldn’t get the waitress attention for another round of drinks or condiments but that can be forgiven. The food was actually good! Pricey yes but it’s Switzerland. Get the alpine Mac and cheese or the Zurich veal dish if you’re hungry. Fries were huge for sharing and perfectly seasoned, coffee was good, and I’d recommend the apricot tart for dessert. We got a bunch of things and shared which was perfect. Highly recommend!

We went for the "Full Moon Dinner", the menu and presentation was very good, worthy of a gastro, the view from the Niesen is superb as well as the sunset and the full moon. We took in the sights 😊

2 of the waitresses are just embarrassing. Inside we are told we can sit anywhere outside and we will be served. However, one person then said that you would only be served at tables with tablecloths (even though the tables were numbered). When I looked a little confused, the saleswoman told me "if I don't like it, I can leave." When another guest wanted to place an order, the same lady said "actually I've had a long break" and even threw the empty coffee cup over in her anger. We wanted to pay for the other service. We listed what we had, then she ran away. At some point another waitress came and brought us the exact same order we already had. Instead of apologizing for the mistake, we were blamed for placing an order even though we said we would be happy to pay and the credit card was obviously on the table. Dear staff, if you are so unmotivated to work, don't do it, then there will be even more staff shortages, but that's definitely NOT how you serve a customer!

The brunch is really well done, friendly service and enough space. The view from up here is really great, it's rare to see so far into the Mittelland, it's worth a visit and if you have a little time you can watch the paragliders taking off and circling.
