Nice shop, old-school. A selection of baked specialities. I had the cumin soft pretzel and a small linzer torte. Both were excellent, in the traditional way. A very classical option for a very classical city, not much space for originality around here it seems.

Unfortunately, yesterday we were very rudely directed to the door to make room for the people coming out of the store. Of course, no problem at all... But not in this arrogant tone without saying please or thank you. Luckily there are other very good bakeries in Basel...

The "Gilgen" is one of those traditional family businesses in Basel that define the character and quality of life of this city and that we hope will remain with us for a long time. What gets surprisingly little mention in the reviews: Gilgen chocolate! The baked goods are excellent, no question. But the creations from the chocolate range are out of this world. They surpass everything I've tasted so far from the art of Swiss chocolatiers. With their incomparably delicate melting, they leave even competitors with the rank of Lindt chocolate behind. So if you want to surprise discerning chocolate lovers with a truly unique culinary experience, treat them to one of the - and so lovingly designed! - Chocolate creations from the Gilgen confectionery.

Whether for my own consumption or for gifts, I have always found something and have never regretted a purchase here.

The tastiest baked goods anywhere. It's incredibly expensive but the taste is simply unmatched. The little Linzer cakes taste like they came from grandmother. I would give 10 stars if I could!

I usually always enjoy coming to this bakery, but on Saturday I was 5 minutes late and the charming saleswoman took the braids out of the shop window. They end up in the trash instead of opening them to sell them?

Bakery-pastry shop with a showcase of those that make you enter. Local specialties. Very good service, even the lady who served us made an effort to speak in our language. They also have coffee to go. Highly recommended

Nice shop with a friendly and competent team. I can highly recommend the yeast pastries and the Basler Läckerli, and anything with puff pastry tastes excellent.

Russenzopf and Linzer Törtli were tested and eaten with pleasure. A little insider tip, a little out of the way, but worth a visit.

On the window it says “The best strawberry cakes” and that’s 100% true. The strawberry tartalettes are super delicious. Definitely recommended.

Great little pastry shops with real delicacies in the heart of the old town. Depending on the situation, you should plan a short waiting time but that speaks for itself. The shop is known and loved by the local population. Recommendation: Streusel cake and raspberry donuts.

Our family has been a regular customer at Gilgen's for years: strawberry cake for our birthdays, as well as Grättimaa and Epiphany cake are always part of our menu. Unfortunately, I am no longer welcome as a mother. Today, with a stroller (it may be tight, but there was plenty of room), I was turned away from the store by security because strollers (and dogs) were not allowed. But I couldn't leave my newborn alone outside out of sight. In 2023 a better solution should be found - and everyone should be welcomed equally - than discriminating against mothers with strollers... Very disappointing.

The three king cakes are really good, as is the Russian plait, but the prices are more than reasonable. In general, the products are overvalued considering the huge prices.

Fantastic bakery with very friendly staff! Recommend waiting to visit about an hour after opening as they are still putting out the fresh baked goods. Worth the wait!!

Cute little bakery in old town. The sausage roll and apple tart are delicious! Very flaky or crumbly crunchy pastry and not soggy at all. The staff are kind enough to explain their yummy goods in English if needed. I wish I had the stomach space to try their other goods! Have spare cash ready if buying under 10 CHF.

The best bakery in Basel. Due to the downgraded quality of baked goods in Basel by the take over by mass market bakeries like Sutter it’s good to find an excellent independent baker. Basel, support it or you’ll be left with mediocrity.

For many, Rome is the Eternal City. Basel is the city that has accompanied me all my life, my eternal city. The magic of the Rhine knee fascinated me even as a little boy, the time-honored Rhine, the middle Rhine bridge. It is a kind of center of the world. If you stroll towards Märtplatz and then go to Spalenberg, you will see the small but exclusive Pâtisserie Gilgen on the right. Just looking through the shop window gives you an idea that there are delights lurking here, the flair of which always puts me into a pleasure mode just by looking at them. Immersion and scents of vanilla, almond, aromas narcotize my nose in a light and playful way and activate receptors that were apparently created just for this purpose :-) The service is always typically Basel-friendly and I notice whoever undertakes this experience for the first time You should first let your eyes enjoy it and then make an excellent decision that will remain unforgettable. I like the simple pastries, the yeast rolls, s Krüzli, d streusel or the nut croissants, because their quality is, to put it bluntly, indulgent and simply stunning, like everything you can get your hands on here. At home on my terrace in the enchanted garden, a fresh Assam second flush, three minutes, with a tumbler in Art Deco, a double oaked Woodford Reserve, like a golden lake, with the patisserie from Gilgen, these are the moments that let life truly stroll...

A little gem tucked into the pedestrian area in the old town up the hill from the Marktplatz. They make fantastic thugs - the "Russenzopf" is one I've bought over and over and it never disappoints. Their baked goods are great across the board as are the little sandwiches. The tuna roll is a pleaser and a yummy bite. I'd recommend eating your way through the entire selection ... really good!

5:50 p.m. on site but still no entry according to the employee “an unfriendly we are now closed” - thanks for the unnecessary trip there. One star for not adhering to the stated opening times and for the extremely rude service. Despite the bad rating, I would like to mention the A1 quality of the baked goods.

Yesterday afternoon, the store is empty. I'm standing in the middle of the store as the only customer. The saleswoman comes and walks past me because a young woman with a child enters behind me. I want to buy something, the saleswoman leaves me standing and only turns to the young woman with her child. Ok, I guess I wasn't likeable enough for her. Not nice. Although, I shop there regularly. But just...

It's always a great shopping experience. Service here is still celebrated with friendliness and we don't even have to talk about the outstanding quality. The Gilgen is and will hopefully remain a Basel institution for a long time to come.

I love the Grättima from Gilgen. These are the tastiest. But in terms of price, that's almost an "insolence". It's a shame, otherwise I would visit the store a lot more.

Gilgen has been a traditional Basel house for decades - and our favorite... only high-quality and delicious baked goods. It's a good thing that there is no such pastry shop in Frankfurt am Main, otherwise I would have to give in to the social trend of extreme weight gain... And I do not want that.

The bakery is really recommended with its large selection of pastries! Whether you fancy a Russian plait (in my opinion the best in the entire Basel region), or another sweet... you can tell everything has been made with attention to detail and taste. Even those who love chocolate don't miss out and can benefit from a large selection of pralines. Of course there are also croissants, rolls, pasties and much more! Petit and traditional bakery - a true gem! A well kept secret in Basel is that the finest bakery products are to be found at Gilgen’s! Be aware that you might have to wait some time before being served due to the many people cuing outside the tiny shop! Foods are delicious, pure in taste, hand-made and truly artisanal! It is pricey but very much appropriate for the outstanding quality you get! For special occasions and festivities this is the place to go to for pastries!

Very fine Basel bakery on the same level as the Krebs bakery. On January 6th (Three Kings Day) you have to expect waiting times of up to 20 minutes.
