Today's driving course for Olivia took us to Evolène, almost in the bottom of the Herence valley in Wallis, a slightly depressing place in the absence of snow at this time of the year. She had her share of hair-pin curves and driving through the thick cloud cover and since we were approaching the time when no more food is served for lunch, we stopped at La Grange, a family run eatery in the very center of Evolène, serving Wallis specialities, or as they state on their menu, specialities from the Valley. You are well received and served what is popular in this part of the world. The only vegetarian dish on the menu besides salads we could find was macaroni mixed with potatoes and grilled under a cheese cover. I had an entrecôte put on a piece of hot slate which is a safe bet for the cooks, since the guest is responsible to do the cooking to his taste. Since I prefer blue, I need to eat very fast, sometimes complicating my digestion. Their wine list is typical of Wallis, i.e. well garnished with local wines. Recommended!

Typical Val d'Hérens restaurant with terrace. Varied choice of dishes, from meat on soapstone to various fondues, including that served in bread. For our part we opted for a chicken fillet with morels and a rabbit leg and polenta. Followed by an apricot crème brûlée and a Guadeloupe coupe (ice cream with Amarena cherries). And an excellent Humagne Réserve des Hunters from Biollaz in Chamoson. Not forgetting the very friendly service. And the visit of the bosses during the meal.

We had a great dinner here in August 2021 and were served by Eloise. She was very friendly and professional, gave us info about the region and the recommended foods and wines to try. We enjoyed the friendly, courteous service, the warm atmosphere with a log fire and the excellent raclette with four different types of cheese from Valais. The restaurant is now called "La Paix - La Grange". We'd love to come back.
