Mae Lek in Thun

The best Thai food in the region. Deliciously fine and incredibly fast. I ordered take-away (in reusable containers) twice over lunch and 15 minutes later the food was ready for pickup. Mae Lek also has a very friendly and well-positioned team!

Small, incredibly good Thai restaurant on the town hall square in Thun. Reservation mandatory. This restaurant was recommended to us by friends and we are absolutely thrilled. Saturday/Sunday there is homemade noodle soup, I have never eaten anything better! The noodles can be chosen in three different sizes, we took the medium size with beef. Chef Ekk gave us tips on seasoning the soup, it was an absolute culinary delight. Clear recommendation, we'll be back soon!

Absolutely loved my meal! A huge thanks to Ecris(Spelling?)! Made actual spicy food in europe which can be so hard to find here. Highly recommend the green curry. But don’t worry, he asked if I could handle the Thai level spice, and even brought out a taster just to be sure. I’ve never been anywhere that does this. Amazing service. Amazingly authentic Thai food made by his Mother. Amazing time with old friends in a beautiful city. Will definitely be telling people about this place. Can gladly say it’s in my top 2 Thai restaurants ever. (Can’t quite say it’s better or worse than my regular Thai place back home in California since I’m quite loyal to them haha) Thanks!

Ended up there at lunchtime by chance. I had no expectations and was really surprised! Great, friendly, courteous service. Food was explained really well if anything was unclear! My green curry was amazing! Fresh ingredients, Thai spicy and I was brought a small spoon to try whether the spiciness was right for me! The portion size was perfect and the price-performance ratio is incredible Absolute recommendation! We will definitely come back when we are in Thun!

I never give 5 stars. But Mae Lek deserves it. For a second I was thinking about putting a bad rating to lower the score, in order for it to have hopefully more availability to accommodate me. But of course I didn't.

Best Thai food in town with taste of genuine home cooking. Very friendly and efficient service, very reasonably priced! In the summer they have tables outside tight by the river. Love it.

Ate very well. Friendly, personable service who explained everything to us in detail and gave us advice. Vegetarian options were pointed out and also asked about nut allergies. Really great! I can highly recommend it. Reservation necessary, as already mentioned in other posts. I felt completely comfortable. Gladly again!

What can I say, excellent service! I have never had an experience like this. The server is available and very happy to talk to you about his dishes. The curries are adapted to your preferences in terms of spices, you even taste before to make sure the dish suits you. The cuisine is typical and authentic, a real delight. I'm just waiting for one thing: to come back!

Very tasty, freshly prepared food. In summer you can eat directly on the Aare, which is very comfortable. I would recommend everyone to eat there. It's worth making a reservation, especially on weekends, as it's often very busy. The soup is particularly worth trying on Saturday or Sunday lunchtime! Ekk is an excellent host!

The shrimp were undercooked and the waiter said it should be that way. 2 hours later I'm sitting in the toilet and everything hurts. After a wonderful stay at Thun Hospital, I now know where I will never go again. I strongly recommend this restaurant to my friends!

A little insider tip for Thai cuisine in Thun. The restaurant offers the opportunity to sit by the Aare when the weather is nice. The service was very friendly and entertaining. The food is inexpensive and the portions are good. Above all, you attach great importance to quality. Update: Waiting times for ordering are catastrophic. Penultimate time 30 minutes. The last time it was 35 minutes before we were even allowed to order the drinks and this time I'm after 25 minutes. gone. Sorry never again.

Let's start with the downside: the service is long (we stayed a little less than 2 hours). This is explained by the fact that only two cooks are at work for around thirty place settings. But what cuisine! We came with our 3 year old daughter and the waiters did everything they could to keep her occupied during the wait. The specialties are varied but the products are fresh and cooked on site. The wait is therefore completely justified. It's been a long time since we ate in such a good Thai restaurant. In summary: excellent specialties with very strong tastes and very attentive service. We recommend !

Fantastic food with outstanding service!

A little pearl with authentic, fresh Thai food in Thun! 70-year-old Mae Lek conjures up very tasty, perfectly balanced dishes in the kitchen. There were three of us and we ate panaeng curry, kao pad (fried rice) and kaprao with Thai basil. Everything tasted excellent. Medium spiciness was ideal for us. The food was aromatic and nice and spicy! However, not in the infamous Thai spiciness, which many Europeans have to capitulate to, even if they like spicy food. If you want to, you can compete with the Thais at Mae Lek and then boldly choose level 3. Since the sauce can be tasted beforehand, there is no risk of overestimation. This is also a big plus in addition to the great hospitality in this restaurant. The host (and son of the cook) and his partner take a lot of time with the guests and you feel more like a friend being entertained than like an ordinary restaurant guest. The overall experience is exceptional! We'll be back, next time with pictures too. Tip: If you can't finish everything, you can take the leftovers home in a box Another tip: the restaurant is small with only a few tables and fills up quickly on weekends. That's why it's best to reserve by email!

I cannot wait to go back here! What a lovely lunch I had! Right on the river, and the most wonderful service. I came alone, so I figured I might not get a prime table, but as it happened one opened up. I ended up sharing with a local regular who also wanted to sit outside. Had an amazing meal with the real spice I had been longing for, they even made me something off-menu since I love Thai basil and I had a craving for noodles. This will be a destination for me in Thun! Fresh, delicious and friendly! No time for photos this time around 😛

Drive here from Interlaken as we were craving for good Thai food. We tried calling before coming here but no one picked up. We arrived and entire restaurant was empty as it was early (7pm) for dinner - per European standards. Owner mentioned the entire restaurant was booked. All tables were empty when we were there. We requested and promised that we will be done I. 30 min to 45 min. But we’re unsuccessful in getting a table. I do t know how the food is. But we’re very disappointed by the approach by the restaurant - letting go good business. Makes no sense to me.

We were lucky enough to enjoy authentic Thai food without making a reservation. We only ordered 5 dishes, enough for 6 people in our family. It was so delicious, especially the cold green papaya, which was very refreshing and worth trying again.

Mae Lek is my absolute favorite restaurant! I like the Sunday soup or the Pad Thai best. Please don't try the spring rolls, after that you'll never be able to eat spring rolls anywhere else again because all the others won't taste good anymore😉.

A great Thai food restaurant I came across during my trip to Switzerland 👍 I couldn't make a reservation, but thanks to someone else's consideration, I had a leisurely and happy meal outdoors🥹 First of all, the owner was very friendly and the food was all delicious! They even asked me if I wanted to put ice in even the smallest of drinks, and explained each and every dish very carefully, so that the waiting time wasn't boring. For the green curry, they asked me in advance about the spiciness level and showed me how spicy it was, and it was really delicious😋 We ordered spring rolls as an aperitif and green curry (chicken) and pad thai (chicken) as main dishes, and they were all delicious! The spring rolls were so big that they even covered people's faces :) If you like cilantro, be sure to add cilantro to your spring rolls! It's refreshing and tastes better. The store's unique sauce goes really well with it and is delicious. The green curry had a spicy and clean taste, so I mixed it all together with the rice, and the Pad Thai was really delicious, with the rich taste of oyster sauce and the taste of black bean noodles. The owner first allowed us to share a meal in a family style, and thanks to that, we had a full and leisurely meal for the first time during our trip. If you are traveling around here and want to eat cheaply and fillingly in Switzerland, it would be a good idea to stop by🫶

Been there several times now. The owner is very friendly and warm, the food is always delicious. The lunch menu has a top price/performance ratio. Pre-ordering is recommended (but it is also noted on the website) as the food is freshly cooked and otherwise there may be waiting times.

The service is usually only covered by the main owner, which has both advantages and disadvantages when the restaurant is full (actually because of the very small number of tables, among other things). It's worth making a reservation so you're guaranteed to enjoy this authentic and excellent Thai cuisine. The only drawback in terms of cuisine here is the selection of drinks.

Small, charming restaurant (reservation recommended!). Excellent food and very courteous service! You can replace meat with tofu and choose the level of spiciness of the curry. You even get a small sample of curry in advance to test the spiciness. Best experience in a long time, definitely not for the last time!!!

A small restaurant that served one of the best noodle soups I have ever tasted. Every Saturday and Sunday there is a lovingly made fresh noodle soup which can be put together with different ingredients. The son served us in a friendly manner and skillfully seasoned the soup right at the table. Highly recommended. Please reserve tables

The personnel is very friendly and courteous. Dishes are explained and adjusted if desired (spiciness - allergy). The portions are probably a bit large, but can be packed up and taken with you. Even though we hadn't made a reservation, a table was still found for us. It is advisable to make reservations as it is very popular. When the weather is nice you can sit outside directly on the Aare. The service was friendly and helpful. The food is freshly prepared and you can taste it too. You can even order non-vegetarian dishes vegetarian and the spiciness can be chosen and tried in advance. I can highly recommend it.

Mae Lek is a real juice shop, just wanted to place a take away order. (as described on the homepage, this is always possible). Think I was rejected!!!! Apparently because of a lack of capacity... the restaurant only has about 6 tables, if they are all occupied, then they will be COMPLETELY OVERCLAIMED!!! When I complained the waiter just hung up the phone on me!! Do you call that customer friendly??? Sorry, you're just doing too well... But remember, pride comes before a fall... Hopefully you won't have any more customers soon... Your restaurant should be closed immediately...!!!! In any case, you will never see me again, I was with you a few times and would have come to you very, very often. (5-10 per month) But that's over now!!!! In that sense, GOODBYE!!!!

We have tried many Thai food and this restaurant serves authentic and flavorful Thai meals. We highly recommend the beef noodle soup and Pad Thai, with their black lemon tea. The restaurant owner was super friendly and taught us how to make your own flavor with the condiments provided. And their Pad Thai sauce is homemade by the restaurant owner's mom, authentically made by a Thailand-er :) We loved and enjoyed our meal, thank you so much!
