the restaurant is beautiful! reminds oneself of a asian restaurant in nyc! the food was delicious too and the waitress was great!!! but we were three girls and payed wayyyy over 100 francs for a bit of food...way to overprized unfortunately for what you get, we weren't satisfied but couldn't order more, moneywise :/

Great dumplings! We were there for lunch and had the 'Dumpling Meat Combo' a CHF 29. This with Dan Dan Noodles and the spicy Chinese cucumber salad. Although everything else is also very good, for me this is my absolute favorite menu in this restaurant. I always enjoy coming back. The service is very friendly!

In Peng, which is located not far from the SBB train station in the Gundeli district, you can eat really good, freshly prepared dumplings. We made reservations in advance and were able to share a table. For lunch there are 2 different menus for around 29 francs each, each served with dumplings (meat or vegetarian), pasta and a salad. There are also some à la carte dishes. The service is friendly, the house iced tea is tasty. Very nice and therefore recommended.

The atmosphere is very nice but the food absolutely overpriced and doesn't remind me of anything from real Asian-dumplins and Bao Buns. The dumplings were relatively ok, but the Bao was a big disappointment. The meat comes outside of the Bao-Bun (and not inside as indicated in the menu) and there is even lettuce and carrot slices on the side; a typical German/Swiss serving choice.. Also, the chinese cucumber side dish was nothing more than a small piece of real cucumber with soja sauce on top and sesami (for chf I can buy 5 whole bio-cucumbers). I wouldn't recommend this restaurant and this is unfortunate as I had high expectations from all reviews and outside appearance.

Very good service, the waiters were very attentive and willing to explain all the dishes (special mention to a waitress who spoke Spanish). All the food was spectacular, we ate dumplings and baos, the recommendations were very good. They have a small detail when giving the bill, some homemade cookies with a lot of coffee flavor. We will repeat for sure!

This restaurant has won our hearts! We arrived without a reservation and the restaurant was fully booked. We were still able to get a seat and the food and service were excellent. We had the 4 course menu for 2 people and it was really a taste experience. Big compliments to the kitchen and many thanks to Lina for the great service. We felt very comfortable with you and will definitely come back.

We had dinner with 10 people. We ordered various dumplings, eggplants, pasta side dishes, spring rolls, everything in the middle of the table and everyone could take whatever they wanted. As a dessert, the black sesame ice cream tasted great and the lemongrass-ginger tea was also in a 1.5 l pot very authentic. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Definitely recommended.

Last year we went to Peng Dumplings about once every 6-8 weeks as my boyfriend likes the food although the menu is quite limited. They also only have a few specials, which strangely don’t change often either… For example, the soft shell crab bao, which I do like, but has been a special for probably 6 months now! I really wish they had more choice, we would go more often although their prices are quite high for the small portions as others have also commented. I understand everything is handmade but this is the case with such restaurants in general, so I think the criticism is fair. They are the only place in Basel that serves this type of food (to our knowledge), however, so they have the advantage of being unique. The team works hard and is typically attentive but service is uneven and sometimes I think they can do more in the way of customer service. One time we went for a romantic dinner to celebrate a special occasion and the server splashed the beer all over our table and our clothes as she was serving it. She apologized but we had to move table, try to dry our clothes with whatever napkins we could find, smell of beer the entire evening and in the end we were still charged full price for our meal (not even the two beers were taken off our bill) despite this mess. I think this should have been handled differently. Last September we won a 50 CHF voucher when one of our pork baos had gold leaf on it when we opened the steaming basket. The employee said this was quite rare, so we were excited! We specifically asked about expiration date and were told not to worry as it would be valid on our next visit. A few times we tried booking but they were closed for special dining events that we weren't interested in instead of their regular dinner service. We also had quite a bit of travel at the end of year, and were away all of December as were many other ex-pats here. My boyfriend just had his birthday on 18th January and we decided to try booking again for this evening, so we could take advantage of the voucher. It turns out despite what the employee told us, the voucher somehow had an expiration date of December 31, 2023. We emailed and were told sorry but nothing can be done for accounting reasons. Shouldn’t the restaurant take responsibility for what the employee told the customers? Apparently there was an expiration date on the emailed voucher (which we also had to chase for after our visit as we didn’t receive it promptly). We will cancel our reservation and go somewhere else. Again, some nice items on the menu but quite pricey and choice is limited, and from my experience having lived in many countries and cities before, the customer service needs to improve. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that customers are happy and return. 30/01/24: The manager has requested that I edit the review to make it more favorable and mention that we have been offered a free drink each on the next visit. This is a good thought and appreciated yet doesn’t invalidate the experiences detailed above given that there is clear room for improvement. It is my belief that this platform isn’t only for leaving 5-star reviews (though I understand why businesses wish it were), so I stand by my ratings. Food quality deserves 4/5, the rest can definitely improve. Thanks for your input Max, and all the best to your team 😊

A culinary dream! The food is delicious, the service was very friendly and helpful.

Food is excellent, prices fair, and perhaps most importantly, service is friendly and faultless. I was very excited to try this restaurant as it had been recommended to me, and good dumplings are hard to find! We were not disappointed on arrival - staff were very friendly, took our coats, and introduced us to the dining concept. The atmosphere and layout is great, modern and stylish. The waitress recommended us to try the mixed set (one vegetarian and one meat) of dumplings to see what we liked - a great idea and we all enjoyed trying the many types - we like them all! Sauces that accompany are also great. We also ordered the pumpkin bao and pork bao - both were excellent. We finally wanted to try and xiao long bao (soup dumplings) - one of my friends had never had them and I was very excited for them to try, as they're a favourite of mine. Unfortunately, when they came - they were flat! They had no soup. We tried a couple but they were dry as anything. Thankfully the staff were super understanding and agreed to bring us another batch. Unfortunately, about half of that was flat too, without soup. We ate these as we were hungry, but staff was very attentive that we hadn't had the true xiao long bao experience - and explained that when being made, something must have gone wrong. Without any complaint, and without my request, they removed these from our bill. This type of attentive and friendly customer service impressed me deeply - though we were disappointed that we didn't get the full experience, I am very, very impressed that they were so attentive to the issue. Any place with such incredible service, and also such amazing food in every other category - certainly will have my service again, and I cannot recommend highly enough! Go try it!!

Went there for lunch and decided on the vegan lunch menu. The dumplings were great and the Dan Dan noodles were also excellently seasoned. The service was exceptional, it's rare to find such nice staff. At 29 CHF, the menu is more than fairly priced. A real highlight of our stay in Basel.

We chose this restaurant because of its high rates…I was a bit disappointed to be honest. The food smelled and tasted very Western. And the prices are a bit high. We tried just some of the veggi/vegan offer (so no idea about the non-veggie choice)…I won’t give it another chance. Anyway, the restaurant was full and the energy was nice.

There were three of us, everything was wonderful. And the service was excellent!

Unfortunately we had a very bad experience at Peng Restaurant. We had to wait quite a long time for our drinks, so we asked the service and then canceled a drink because it came so late. The waitress (and apparently also the co-owner) came to our table with a very aggressive and unpleasant attitude. She held the order slip 2cm in front of my colleague's face and said very aggressively that she should pay for this wine and also insulted her verbally. Unfortunately, in my opinion, this is no way to treat a guest, even if you have a different opinion than the guest. The food is average or quite okay. In my opinion, it doesn't quite live up to the "hype". But with such poor service (which I have experienced on previous visits, just less aggressively), I don't think the restaurant can promise a nice and relaxed evening. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the Peng restaurant, there are better places in Basel.

Very tasty food, pretty cheap for Switzerland. The menu is complete with a lot of choices but not too much. Waiters and waitresses were very kind and the place is quiet and nice. Definitely recommend it

So this can be a pretty nice place, but imho just way too hit and miss for the price. I definitely recommend the pork belly bao buns. When it comes to the xiao long bao, they weren’t to my subjective taste though. I am the type of person who types “xiao long bao” into google maps wherever I travel, and I have found many good ones when travelling. I had tried the XLB at Peng before and the fact I don’t like them is one of the main reason I never returned. Now I went again, we ordered 16 of them. I ate 2 and then left the rest to the others and instead ordered something else. I can add that the two co-diners I was with liked the XLB fine.

Interesting little restaurant located on a street perpendicular to Gütetstrasse, where one of the specialties is steamed ravioli. If you like this cuisine then go for it, it's worth it! Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Our menu: Dumpling Mix Combo & Dan Dan Noodle accompanied by a white Merlot. We'll come back!

The atmosphere of the restaurant is really friendly, the servers are really attentive and the food is delicious. The only negative point to deplore is the price of the daily special which amounts to 27.-, which is however a little expensive even for a city the size of Basel...

It’s delicious, friendly, and has a great atmosphere! It's a bit pricey, but it tastes more like Singaporean style food than traditional Chinese food! I liked the xiao long bao so-so, and the bao (steamed bun-like thing) was good. It tastes similar to the one I often buy in Singapore! The noodles seem to be made from scratch. I think it would be ok if you order one noodle each and dumplings as a side. If you think you'll fill your stomach with just dumplings, the price is too much.

The meal was simply a culinary experience. The dumplings, the fried eggplants everything was excellent. The price-performance ratio is unbeatable. The service is always attentive and practically reads your wishes from your lips! It's definitely worth coming here, whether alone or with the whole family!

What you get here from this kitchen is amazing in terms of taste. The boss is very, very friendly and accommodating. If you want to eat something completely different, you've come to the right place.

Very soberly furnished restaurant. Reception and explanation of the card in English. But understand German! Service relatively young and inexperienced. Sauces on the table are inconvenient as they make a mess. You can also look at the tables. It would be better to serve different sauces in individual bowls with the dumplings. Side dishes ok, dumplings were excellent.

The Peng in Basel is definitely worth a visit. The restaurant is centrally located in the city and is an ideal meeting point for a cozy evening with friends or family. The atmosphere is very inviting and relaxed, which is also due to the friendly staff. The food at Peng is very tasty and offers a good selection of different dishes, all of which are fresh and high quality. All in all, Peng in Basel is a great place to spend a cozy evening and experience something special. The quality of the food and drinks make the restaurant a must-visit in Basel. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Friendly stuff , nice environment, easy reservation. Enjoyable food Unfortunately for them I did spent time in China and tasted real dumpling so they loose a star (our of 5 possible) because the wrapping of the Xiaolongbao was too thick and the bao way too small and with little filling

What a great restaurant, very helpful and extremely friendly service, pleasant atmosphere and the food is a dream! Each dish surprises with different aromas and tastes, it is a pleasure to try your way through this varied menu. We've already been there twice, traveling specifically from Germany (about an hour from Freiburg) and it's worth it! Even for Switzerland, the price-performance ratio is great. Our restaurateurs can take this as an example, absolutely great!

Were there in the evening as a couple. Everything occupied. We were offered a place near the kitchen. Good choice. Interesting to watch the hustle and bustle in the kitchen. A large glass dome above our head. The full moon shone in. That was really special. Staff very friendly. Main language English. No problem for us. The food offered was new to us. What is a dumpling? Everything was explained to us in detail. The food was very good but expensive because the portions are quite small. Less suitable for satiation. Nevertheless, the restaurant is an amusing change in the gastronomic area of ​​Basel. Reservation recommended.

We had our Christmas dinner at Peng Dumpings and were very satisfied. The varied and tasty courses of Asian cuisine were well received and the service took good care of our well-being. We would be happy to come back to Peng Dumpings. Dent Care Clinic, Liestal

2 for service, no more. This is not what dumplings and xiao bao should be. You can find way better, way more authentic frozen dumplings in Chinese supermarkets.

In a Swiss restaurant I wouldn't expect a service person who absolutely doesn't want to speak German. A dirty table was not cleaned after the meal. The food wasn't that special and the prices are too high for what was offered.

The “salad” as a starter was completely overpriced for 17.00 and not really a salad. It was more of a flat stack of paper-thin slices of beef and cucumber. The steamed dumplings were relatively small but tasty. It takes about 10-12 to fill up if you are normally hungry. The pork baos were incredibly tasty and sweet, and the price was right. The pudding-filled baos for dessert were unfortunately very small but also nice and tasty. Tap water (0.5l) costs 3.-. The service was quick, nice and spoke English. It's nice inside and also relatively crowded on weekday evenings. In terms of price, the lunch menu is much more worth it than dinner there.

The food taste good but not superior than most Asian kitchens in Switzerland. The service is nice and attentive. Why not 5 stars? The portions of dumplings are small. You pay about 8-10 CHF for 2 Gyoza. Also in the main dishes, the portion of rice/ noodles is oversized and the portion of animal protein is very small. Like I had a duck dish and there was maybe 50gr of thinly sliced meat. The animal protein is what’s expansive in the fish so the overall experience feels like a cash grab. Not all bad, but given the high ratings I saw I felt disappointed.

Wonderful food and service - definitely worth a visit. We would love to come back when we come to Basel again.
