Schäfli in Winterthur

Simply very, very fine! Especially Bohemian cuisine.

This lunchtime I had dinner at the Schäfli restaurant on Oberen Graben in Winterthur. The restaurant was very busy. Luckily someone was having lunch very early today so I got his table as soon as he left. The restaurant is very nicely located. Several, visually completely different guest rooms extend across two buildings, the Schäfli and the Haus zum Störchli. In summer you can also dine under the trees on Grabenallee. I was served very quickly and efficiently and in a friendly manner and received my drink as soon as it was ordered. Soup, salad and main course were also served almost seamlessly. I enjoyed my lunch and the portions were quite large. Of course, I would have liked a fresh, homemade hollandaise sauce to go with the asparagus. But I remain realistic because I pay less than CHF 30 for everything - a very good price-performance ratio.

We were there for lunch with a group of 9 people and luckily we were served. We would be served immediately and quickly provided with drinks. Shortly afterwards the food arrived even though we ordered everything queerbert (menu of the day, cordonbleu, gnocchi etc.) Above all, we were positively surprised by the huge portions and the quality. So Preu's performance is totally right. Gladly again

Very tasty Czech specialties. One of the few places I know that has dumplings. Nice personel. It took a while before we could pay.

Very good food at fair prices! The staff is polite and attentive, the portions are generous, as you would expect in a home-style restaurant. The ambience is different because the restaurant is divided into two parts. One side is very light and white, the other is rustic and rather dark. The garden is very beautiful in summer!

I love it, it's a shame you have to make a reservation otherwise you won't find a place, but for me it's by far the best restaurant in Winterthur, price/performance 5*

If you would like to try something new and really enjoy some fine Czech food, Schäfli is highly recommended. Super nice staff and boss. You will be served quickly and very friendly. No long wait, simply top performance.

This restaurant lives from the splendor of the old days. The cuisine is loveless, the price is exorbitant and the quality also leaves a lot to be desired. A pity.

There for the first and last time.👎🏼 We made reservations (in the fall) and showed up at the Obertor entrance on time. When we mentioned our reservation they just said we had table number XYZ in the back yard. No accompaniment to the table, but rather searching for it yourself is the order of the day. Well, once we found our way to the backyard, we eventually found the table assigned to us. We decided on game and ordered it. Unfortunately the meat was VERY dry and so were the chestnuts. During our entire meal, no one ever came by to ask if everything was okay. When we were clearing up we were asked if everything was okay. We replied very politely that the meat and chestnuts were unfortunately surprisingly dry, not as we are used to from a game plate. The reaction from the waiter was literally: “Aha, okay”. No more and no less. No sign of apology, let alone making amends. Well, we've learned our lesson. We strongly advise all of our friends against this restaurant and will definitely never come back. There are too many better addresses in Winterthur.

The unfriendly boss in the Winterthur gastronomy scene (whose restaurants I can highly recommend) and the poor staff are correspondingly stressed. We strongly advise against visiting unless you like being insulted in Czech. My three friends and I will give this restaurant a wide berth in the future and instead enjoy the other gastronomic options in this beautiful city.

Food was good but not exceptional. Service was friendly but it took food a long time to arrive. We took a lunch special which should have been easy to push out the kitchen fairly quick. Beautiful restaurant and backyard. I would recommend.

We've had excellent meals here before, but not recently. The garden itself has a lot of potential, but appears a bit careless. Inside, the atmosphere is much more stylish. Our food (game without game) was a bit bland and not at the level we were used to. We will definitely give the Schäfli another chance, but then we will rely on the house classics.

This restaurant was recommended to me by a wine cellar close by. Indeed the food is fantastic, it’s a fusion of Swiss and Czech, I had the seasonal mushrooms with a very tasty sauce. Now for the service, I personally had Peter as a server and his attitude leaves a lot to be desired. He was extremely annoyed when I asked for suggestion between two meals and which one is more popular. Then he left and sent another (very nice lady) over from which I ordered. I had my meal and Peter ignored me until all the tables around me left. I was hoping to try some Czech desert and coffee but he ignored me to the point that after 35min I went up and asked one of the ladies who was bringing food from the kitchen for a check. To summarize the food is great, the service specifically from this server was a disaster.

Went there again after two years The Vepro Knedlo Zelo is really tasty, I loved it, however the portion is massive, so think twice before ordering too many starters haha

“Vepřová, Knedlík, Zelí”, plus a “Staropramen” and you are full, happy and satisfied. I'd love to come back soon.

The Czech national dish was excellent. A little more sauce wouldn't have hurt.

Unfortunately the food wasn't good at all. The homemade bread dumplings with mushroom sauce were pretty tasteless. When I closed my eyes, I had a fantasy of sachet sauce with dry bread. The staff wasn't exactly unfriendly, but inattentive and unsmiling. You didn't feel welcome. We also didn't have savory biscuits and olives for the aperitif, which were left at other tables. It's a shame, the only thing that made the evening shine was the fine Czech beer.

The Schäfli is always worth a visit. It doesn't matter whether you have lunch or dinner, or just treat yourself to a small snack such as an ice cream coup. There are plenty of seats in the shade as well as in the sun, the menu is varied and offers classics as well as many Bohemian dishes. At lunchtime, the menu is particularly recommended; I have rarely seen so many offers for a lunch menu.

The food is good here. However, the waitress unnecessarily shouted at us in a very unfriendly way before we even sat down, which was a shame. Therefore: never again.

We arrived with 14 people, quick service, delicious dishes, garden at the back of the restaurant very cozy, a candle on the dessert of a jubilee that evening, really very very good!

The food is very good. The dishes are abundant and everything is delicious. The time between courses was calm, something to be appreciated for talking and having a relaxed dinner. Very very good. Rather tasteless. Could be prepared more delicately

One thing in advance, When it comes to food, taste, preparation and presentation, I give it 5 stars and bravo to the chef. But: What's the point of eating well if you're treated so dirty! You go to the restaurant in the evening to enjoy a moment of reflection, relaxation and simply a great moment. But: When you are served by 2 so unsympathetic waiters, especially by 1 unsympathetic waiter (where served is not the right word) you just become so bitter and hateful, no matter what the food and good wine may be. The one on Loved ones just leave everything and leave this place/restaurant! So terrible.! We will absolutely blacklist this location for future events. A tip to the management. Think about your staff, because at least these 2 employees shouldn't even let them wash their own dishes. (Event date Monday July 17th, 2023 approx. 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., wheelchair users and pedestrians)

Central location, also pleasant to sit outside. Rich menu, there are also various alcoholic drinks and desserts.

It has to be five stars. Everything is harmonious: the location, the ambience, the beautiful garden to sit in - in front of and behind the house and the food! For me it tastes like home because my mother cooked Bohemian cuisine for us as children! In Schäfli you can enjoy all the delicacies, from sauerbraten with dumplings to Liwanzen. I'm going there again tomorrow.

Update: Tested the roast beef, which was “recommended” this week, with salad and ice cream. Unfortunately I have to give it the worst grade: Everything was made from ready-made products in the style of a bad Schwümmbi kiosk and just not good - I still feel sick the morning after. In defense: I haven't tried the Czech specialties, I hope they are better. However, the service was very nice etc. Evaluation criterion: “* the food was bad and afterwards I felt nauseous or even sick.”

The food is very good and authentic, portions are generous. Nice restaurant. It would be perfect if the service staff were also motivated.

We were there for the first time last night with a friend. It started with the menu until the waitress came to us. We ordered “Chefin’s Salad”. It took them so long to serve this. Afterwards we wanted more salad dressing, which we had to ask twice. Finally we got the bill and wanted to pay with the card. The waiter was waiting and I asked him if he didn't know the amount. He answers cheekily, but he wants to know how much tip he gets. I can not believe it. I said give you the tip in your hand. Thank you very much and never see you again.

Unfortunately the fish crispies were inedible. The price-performance ratio is not right for us.

On a fitness plate 50 minutes. It's a remarkably long time to wait, then after a decent inquiry as to whether the food was forgotten, to receive a multiple irascible answer and a shaking of the head, borders on customer contempt. If there had been a verbal slip-up, I wouldn't have reacted, it can happen to anyone, bad day, etc. But making multiple verbal comments against a guest shows a cheeky manner and lack of decency. I would have tolerated one slip-up, but you have to react to multiple insults. Employees; frustrated, hairless guy, around 45 years old, broken German. 06/29/23

An idyllic outdoor spot in the middle of Winterthur and when it starts to rain you go inside or adjust your parasol.

We were there for lunch as a small group. The lunch menu itself doesn't look like much, which is why I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel. The service makes an unmotivated and uncoordinated impression. For example, For example, when it came to drinks, you weren't asked whether you wanted a large or small cola, you just got the small one. The side salad seemed to come randomly and was different for each person. The fries with the schnitzel were far from anything special, except for being particularly dry. The schnitzel itself, however, was quite good. For the price of around 45 CHF, I would have expected something better.

Highly recommended: in summer it is best to sit outside, at Oberer Graben. In any case, you should enjoy Czech cuisine, both the meat dishes and the special sweets. I particularly like the Ore Mountains bag “Krušnohorská Taška”

Even though we pre-ordered the food, we had to wait over an hour for the food. When we asked the waiter, the only answer we got was that it was freshly made. We had cheese pätzli and stroganoff, which didn't look very freshly made. The stroganoff was quite good, but the cheese noodles weren't really what you would expect from cheese noodles. When we told the waiter that they weren't that good, the answer was that they weren't a house specialty. After the meal, the waiter never came to the table to ask for dessert, even though we sat there for another hour.

Although our small group of 6 people was pre-registered by the tourist information office and we had to specify the menu in advance, we waited over an hour for our food. Unfortunately, this wasn't really good, to which the waiter simply replied "this dish is just not our specialty". However, it was the menu that they themselves had suggested. It's a shame, but I definitely won't come here again. Very unfriendly service.

Great ambience, very friendly service and incredibly fine food. Very important to reserve. Is very well attended. Despite the full house, we didn't have to wait long for food and drinks. We'll definitely come back. Thank you again for the lovely evening.

Wasn't in the Schäfli restaurant.

Wonderful food, very good quality and beautifully presented. However, the operation leaves something to be desired. The food was served separately because the waiter wrote down the order incorrectly. And then the person sitting next to us (who had ordered much later after us) was served our food before we all had our food. So we were able to enjoy the New Year's Eve menu alone. Unfortunately we weren't offered coffee or anything else to make up for it. A pity!

I was in a group with a bit of time pressure for dinner at Schäfli. Despite the à la carte service and a full house, everything went smoothly without a long wait. As usual, the food was very good and nicely presented and the staff was friendly.

I didn't like the food at all. Finished products that were carelessly warmed up and served. Unfortunately, the staff was extremely unfriendly and unable to take criticism. I cannot recommend the restaurant.

The Schäfli Restaurant is the safest value when it comes to home-style, fine cuisine. The Czech/Bohemian specialties that round off the menu are excellent. In summer, a refreshingly cool garden invites you to have a beer or two. In winter the cozy dining room in the older part of the restaurant. The service is professional, efficient and extremely friendly. The veal schnitzels with Czech potato salad are highly recommended. Always my pleasure.

We were there on August 4th. Dinner at Schäfli, the first time at Schäfli in over 15 years and the next time definitely won't be soon. It was an extremely warm summer evening, which was probably the reason for the extremely poor service. The waiter showed little interest in us as guests, totally indifferent expression and behavior, no eye contact, was partly annoyed. The main course was brought by a younger woman with no knowledge of German, spoke poor English, and we had to ask for the dessert menu several times. Well, it could be that the waiter had a bad day, but that was really bad!! The service was extremely unprofessional, it would be better to do something else without human contact. So I can't possibly give a tip, sorry. When leaving the restaurant I walked past about 8 to 10 service employees. Not a single person looked at me, noticed me or said goodbye anyway. I have never experienced that in Switzerland or abroad. The evening was over for me. Oh yes, there was also food, my soup was normal average, it was supposed to have been a garlic soup without garlic, the main course was beef fillet goulash stroganoff with bread dumplings for 41.80, the cream sauce was neither racy as described nor any other good/remarkably plentiful, the bread dumplings were like 6 slices of bread on the plate (I imagined it differently, it was my mistake, I should have ordered a different side dish, still disappointed), the meat was too cooked, not juicy, rather little on the plate. The only thing I remember as good to very good was the dessert. Rating service in the negative range but less than 1 star is not possible, food rating of what we ordered a well-intentioned 3. Sorry guys but you really can't offer that, otherwise something will work.

Super friendly for families, young, old, wheelchair accessible. It's better to reserve in advance, very popular.

Preferably no stars at all. Server (bald man) was very rude to us and to my friend who was here as a tourist and only spoke English. When my friend wanted to pay, he simply threw the payment terminal on the table (still switched off) and expected us to turn it on ourselves and enter the amount. When he came back and, annoyed, switched on the payment terminal and finally gave my reason, he didn't even thank us or say goodbye, he just looked away annoyed and left. I called him back to give him my feedback about the long wait times (15 minutes for a beer and an Aperol Spritz) and he responded (thanks for the feedback but you are not the only customer in this restaurant). Never again, I don't advise anyone. Ruined our entire day trip to Winterthur.

Czech, Swiss restaurant. When the weather is nice there is plenty of seating (in front of the house and in the back garden). I recommend making reservations indoors in the evening. We recommend goulash, meatloaf, stroganoff and much more. We were served friendly and quickly. Will come again and again.

Nice restaurant with a different atmosphere. There are two different rooms connected to each other. One is more restaurant-like with a lot of wood and the other is a little brighter with more design. We stayed in the latter and found it very pleasant. There are also many tables outside. Our Aperol Spritz was quite large and very good. The menu is very large with many Czech dishes. The portions are also rather large. There is also free antipasti at the beginning. It also has a children's menu.
