Restaurant Zum Braunen Mutz Brasserie in Basel

My boyfriend and I were visiting from London and we truly got to immerse ourself in the culture of Basel, Switzerland. The waiter who served us was really friendly and recommended a range of dishes to try that was the most popular by local guests. We opted for the Cordon Bleu as well as the Veal Escalope and both I recommend to try except do try to get the escalope with a side dish of mushrooms as can be quite dry by itself. We also got a ham and cheese plate to start which was delicious plus the local beers are not one to miss.

Very bad... the cordon bleu was completely raw and the food came separately, some were almost finished when the others in our family got their food... the cola was good.

We went for a beer in the brown Mutz and were very impressed by the very pleasant atmosphere. The beer hall is super cozy and very sociable. The many colorful, bears from the carnival clubs of the last decades give a traditional flair. The service was very friendly and even though we weren't there to eat, the menu with typical brewery classics looked very inviting.

We ate here on the first evening of our short stay in Basel and were happy to get a seat without a reservation just before the evening rush. The ambience is special and leaves you amazed, it is rustically furnished and the concept fits. However, it is loud and has something of an indoor atmosphere. For Berlin price standards, looking at the menu makes you gulp, but we were prepared for that. The service changed from time to time and was always friendly and attentive. We ordered a lady schnitzel with fries, spaetzle and two glasses of white wine. When the food was served, I was honestly a bit amazed that the already smaller schnitzel was served on such a huge plate without any decoration in the form of lettuce leaves. The fries came in a special bowl. I found ketchup and mayonnaise in pre-packaged bags really bad. I thought that didn't exist anymore, in terms of waste prevention and because things could be so much better. The taste of the schnitzel was good, you can't say anything about that, the fries were ok - not particularly tasty or well salted. My partner's spaetzle was tasty and a good portion.

Enjoy your meal. Good even on stressful carnivals.

Unfortunately, the salad was no longer the freshest (partly brown and mushy). Otherwise service, fast and friendly. Atmosphere authentic.

Last Friday, around 11 p.m., we (4 people) wanted to have a cozy snooze cup at Brune Mutz after a wonderful evening at the Theater Basel. The door was already closed from the inside, the bar on the right was already set up... but in the brasserie there were numerous guests (almost full!). When we entered as guests leaving the rest...we were very abruptly told by the staff to leave the rest. The last lap was running and would then close. Saturday evening, 11 p.m. (their opening hours are 24 hours)...a well-filled Basel bar that turns away good customers (we've come more often so far) - that hurts! It's a shame, it's a shame!!

I booked the 1st floor for a friend travelling to Basel on a Sunday. Uppon arriving we were told that despite this, we were the only ones who had booked at the "restaurant" on the first floor and that because of that it will stay closed and we should take a seat in the "beerhall" on the ground floor. Be aware that this can happen. Aside of that, typical swiss dishes with many cordon bleus options, rösti etc. The food was OK, what you would expect in a beerhall.

There's a certain charm to this place. I had the veal cordon bleu, it was great. Big portions, quick service, it's noisy, but not in a bothering way.

I was kindly invited to lunch. A rosé wine as an aperitif to prepare the meal: a hearty salad that was followed in my case by a hearty cordon bleu, Asturian cachopo style, with very tender meat and that was enough to satisfy the appetite, accompanied by a glass of pinot noir. Correct service and Swiss prices, but you won't leave there hungry and on top of that you'll like it.

If you want to try a great fondue 🫕 you have to visit Zum Braune Mutz. The location is very cosy, and the staff smiles and sere you the best dishes 🥰 We tried fondue and desert and they are absolutely delicious.

Loved it! The atmosphere was so cozy and you get all the local vibes you need. We had delicious local beer and delicious food - pork cordon bleu with spaetzle and pork sausage with potato rosti. Very friendly service also. I can only recommend this place.

Very cozy restaurant, with a very German atmosphere. We saw the suggestion at the entrance to Cordon blue and it was exactly what we asked for. The price was a little high, but I believe it is the normal price in Switzerland.

Great restaurant with very good food wide choice of meals a little expensive but quality of food is impeccable the only small drawback is that there is a lot of noise downstairs, there is a bar to eat you have to go to the 1st floor which is quieter otherwise great restaurant.

It may be because we didn't get to eat until 8:30 p.m. 5 people. 3x cordon bleu, 1 x entrecote and once Läberli. All the food was not good. The liver and rösti were completely over-salted, the entrecote was tough, the fries were soggy and the cordon bleu smelled like fish. Prices are extremely cheap, but I would happily pay more and get something edible in return.

Delicious dishes and very kind staff, we also forgot a pair of glasses in the restaurant, the girl who served us was very kind to put the glasses aside and when we returned to retrieve the glasses she gave them back to me immediately. Compliments to the blonde waitress.

A legend back then, today it's simply a bar. Visually not much has changed, but as a whole package in conjunction with the employees, the "Basel flair" is somehow no longer there. It's as if the Mutz has lost its soul.

We ate schnitzel and entrecôte, it was very delicious. We ordered Kasekutchen as dessert because the English description said cheesecake. But the cheese tart arrived. Don't make our mistake🫣. But still, we tasted something very delicious and I would definitely recommend it. Amber became our favorite beer. The atmosphere was decent but crowded, you may have to wait in line to get a seat. The toilet was clean. The waiters were attentive and kind. we liked it very much

We really liked the food, the best of those we tried in Basel. The price to be in normal Basel. Water 6.50 Wine 9 euros a glass and about 8 euros a beer. The food cost us 90 euros.

Home-style food in a traditional restaurant right in the center and at very reasonable prices! Eight of us (4 adults/4 children) spontaneously went there for lunch this afternoon (Autumn Fair Saturday). The children's portions were generous. Breaded schnitzel with fries from the children's menu for CHF 14.50. The adults had bratwurst with rösti/meatloaf at CHF 24.50/25.50. I find the menu for the schnitzels/cordon bleus misleading. The supplement must be ordered/paid for separately there. French fries: CHF +6.50! Despite the hustle and bustle, we received friendly service. I can recommend a visit to the brown Mutz to everyone.

You definitely have to try the half meter Cordon Bleu for two people. That's 69 francs that you won't regret. The waiters are friendly and humorous, and not the least bit stressed, even on Saturdays. Only the toilet cubicles are in need of a slight renovation

I had dinner there twice during my trip to Basel. I tried the Schnitzel and the Gordon blue. The portions were quite big, the food was ok but felt a bit heavy to digest and the staff was very kind. I liked the atmosphere too. I suppose the prices are good for a restaurant in Switzerland, but still quite expensive compared to other European countries.

Oh dear, as a Basel resident, I wanted to do something good for my “people” from the Rhineland (D). Conclusion: from South Tyrol (I) via Austria, Alsace (F), Bavaria and South Baden (but also in Basel) we/I have not experienced a “stranger” so-called home-style cuisine. I was embarrassed. For example, meatloaf is a half-warm lump, sausage salad is probably from a discount store. In my/our opinion, Mutz is not a good recommendation for Basel. The central location at Barfi is the only positive thing.

I would like to share my experience at Brauen Mutz in Basel at Barfüsserplatz. Overall I can only give the restaurant two stars. Here is my reasoning: Positive: The service was friendly and accommodating, except for a small incident during billing. There was an error and I accidentally paid 5 CHF too much. However, the waitress seemed very stressed and was unable to correct the error. Negative: Unfortunately the quality of the food was not satisfactory. My girlfriend ordered the Ladyschnitzel with French fries. The schnitzel itself was fine, but the fries were an absolute disaster. They were cold and soggy which detracted from the overall experience. I chose the meatloaf for the price was acceptable, but still disappointing. In summary, I would no longer recommend Brauen Mutz. The stressful situation with payment and the disappointing quality of the food put me off visiting again. Please note that this is my personal experience and others may have different experiences.

Typical Swiss restaurant. The food is good but the restaurant remains very expensive for what it is. We were served by a very unfriendly lady. She got our order wrong and didn't even ask us if we wanted desserts. The only smile she has. kindly done to us was when paying the bill.

Definitely worth a visit. I was here for the last time before the renovation and once again it was worth it. Good home cooking paired with a very special charm that is second to none. The “Brauner Mutz” is and remains one of the biggest culinary attractions in Basel. Above all, it's nice to see that the "Brasserie" has remained as it used to be with the conversion or renovation/renovation. The food was and is very fine. All of our menus looked very good and everyone was very satisfied. The service is friendly and attentive. Another business lunch confirmed my assessment again.
