Austern- und Hummer Bar in Zürich

Exceptional food, served well but in a triste environment. Badly needs a redisign/remaking/refreshing of forniture and sarrounding.

I was there three weeks ago. While pouring the sauce over my lobster, the waiter emptied it all over my torso and pants. We're talking about 300ml of hot, fatty sauce. Everything from the left breast down to the waistband of the pants was full. From that moment on, the evening was over for us. We actually wanted to move on after dinner, but that was no longer possible. How did the restaurant accommodate me? The waiter offered to have the shirt cleaned, which I declined because it would be less hassle for me to just throw my shirt in my own washing machine instead of having to go back and forth to the restaurant and then back and forth again to be picked up . So wouldn't really have been better for me. Afterwards the waiter just offered me the aperitifs. Those were two sparsely filled glasses. In my opinion, far too little for what was done to me. The two of us ended up leaving over CHF 380 for a ruined evening. What I would like to add: The restaurant's toilet was the worst and most disgusting one I have ever experienced in Switzerland. The whole floor was sticky and not a single toilet had any toilet paper. A toilet was full. Apparently they invest far too little in cleaning staff. The food tasted good, especially the lobster. My starter, fish soup, was rather mediocre. I've had much better ones in much cheaper restaurants in Portugal or Greece. For example, these were nice and creamy and the fish pieces in them were very tender, literally melted in your mouth. But here it felt like it was just bouillon with a few dry pieces of fish in it.

Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience - from taking the order, to the incorrectly delivered main course with incorrect side dishes that were delivered completely cooked, to the behavior after the numerous errors were pointed out. After paying the bill, the service staff unapologetically and proudly pointed out the glass of wine that was offered, although it was the last sip from the open bottle (estimated 0.5 dl). It's a shame the restaurant has declined so much. Definitely not recommended anymore…

We were there on my wife's birthday and had contacted Mr. Ellermann in advance about reservations and a birthday dessert. Despite the short reservation time, everything went smoothly. When we arrived we were allowed to ring the doorbell and were warmly greeted by Mr. Ellermann. The coats were removed and we were escorted to the table. The dishes available are very well selected and ideally present the very beautiful restaurant and the cuisine. We had a great start with champagne for this special occasion. We chose it for its high online ratings but we had a disappointing experience. They were understaffed and it seemed regulars were getting all the attention. As non French speaking visitors we were left hanging needing to wave someone down consistently. Even to fill our glasses. I couldn't even remember what I ate because it was not memorable. Hubby has to remind me that we had duck and it was dry.

Maybe one of the best meals of all of 2019 (and for sure most expensive), we went right before the Christmas time and the menu was so rich and delicious, the foie grass stood out above all.
