It's a small old school joint... It's very beautiful...the food choice is great, but the pancakes 🥞 i think are somehow overdone.... The atmosphere there is very lively. i think it's also kids friendly...

Food very good, large selection!!! Drinks well.. Glasses dirty... The waitresses were very unfriendly, seemed overwhelmed, were very unfriendly to us because we were sitting at an “unserviceable” table (we were in a corner and the waitress just had to lean over to us a little… ) we had to move around 3 times (!!!)!!! Then they apparently didn't have any sandwiches because it was supposedly "too crowded"... well that's how it should be in a good brunch restaurant?? Ambiance could also be more comfortable... Broken furniture, dirty... I'm always less of a fan, I thought it was very good at the beginning, but now it's just annoying and not comfortable.

I really like to cook and follow my diet, so this is an ideal place where there will be both healthy and tasty dishes! Very tasty, I'm delighted☺️

The food was always good, but unfortunately the restaurant had very unfriendly staff! The lady should think about whether it really makes sense for her to work with people. I'm definitely not coming back like this.

Nice ambiance and quick service, plus complimentary water. However, the brunch menu (15$) was extremely disappointing. Boring salad with and minimal quinoa on top. The quiche was more like a Spanish omelette and tasted just okay. Served with one piece of bread. I added beef köfte (3 small pieces for $5), while my colleague ordered the French toast ($7, still don't know if it's a French toast?) and a chocolate croissant (likely not freshly made, probably from the previous day). Plus, two coffees. Can't recommend this restaurant for breakfast, quite disappointed for 60$. There are better options in the area, even a supermarket croissant is better.

The food was almost amazing with just one exception. Strangely (for a brunch place) the coffee was not very good. But everything else was good enough to still warrant 5 stars.

Cozy brunch spot with delicious vegetarian food. You'll need to take some time, but it's definitely worth it. I really enjoy coming here for a late breakfast or lunch.

The food is excellent. Fresh, healthy and beautifully presented! :) The waiting times are a bit long, but it's worth the wait! Definitely a must try if you want a good brunch in Basel.

Would like a vintage look doesn't mean broken furniture! Cafétal very bitter and latte macchiato only consisted of milk. Quiche was very tasty. Salad consisted of ready-made mixture with ready-made salad sauce. Bread was very tasty until we saw that it was stored openly outside. All in all, totally overrated and we wouldn't go there a second time. You are also spoken to in English, which I find strange since we are in Basel, Switzerland.

Nice and friendly staff though stressed. Food was ok. Service was overwhelmed by the people and sitting close to the door during winter time is a bad idea. Every minute someone gets in to ask for a seat, even the place is full. Instead the people should wait outside and the staff can get them if seats get free. Overall ok but for sure room for improvement in all areas. Ps: glutenfree options available

Unfortunately we had a really disappointing visit to Avant Gouz this morning. The coffee was much too strong and not really hot, the "Healthy Salad" was the worst thing I've eaten in a long time - practically no bed of lettuce, just warmed carrots without dressing and even these must have been from the day before and tasted old. The slice of bread was also dried out and old. I left more than half on the plate because it was inedible. Healthy is definitely different. The little smoothie on the plate was the only thing that brought joy. We paid 45CHF for this "salad", an Oeuf Benedict and two cups of classic coffee. Since I had to go to the airport and didn't have much time, I didn't say anything, which now annoys me in retrospect. I should have let the salad go back. It's a shame - the location is beautifully done and the extensive menu sounds great, but perhaps it should be reduced in favor of quality.

Very cute cafe... chill vibes & friendly service. I ordered a French Latte with honey (don't remember what it was called), but it was good. Then the egg benedict with avocado, it wasnt your typical benedict the hollandaise sauce was different and it was served on a brioche bun, but still good. Slightly priced high, but still yummy.

Staff were attentive despite being busy, the menu is very broad allowing flexibility and there were also gluten free options. My partner took the shakshuka and i had eggs benedict, both were delicious, i highly recommend👌🏻

Great atmosphere, but incredibly exorbitant prices: Brunch for 15.- means: A little salad with a small piece of quiche, a piece of old bread (from the day before?), 1 small smoothie and a cracker. A scrambled egg and a cappuccino cost an additional 10.50. For >25.- I have had a much better brunch

I recently had lunch at Avant Gouz with a group of friends, some of whom have food allergies. I was deeply disappointed by the staff's lack of knowledge regarding the ingredients in their dishes. When asked if a particular dish contained fava beans, the only response we received was "vegetables." It's alarming and unacceptable that a restaurant is unaware of what they are serving, especially when customers' health and safety are at stake. I found this experience quite unsettling and would urge potential diners to exercise caution if they have dietary restrictions.

Culinary very good, unfortunately a bit too expensive.

We were in the rolling mill in the new Avant-Gouz and the service was friendly but not competent. First we had to wait 45 minutes for anyone to come and then most of the order was wrong. Instead of hibiscus iced tea came ginger (disgusting) and the water was completely forgotten. Only the glass of wine worked. Conclusion: once and never again

Unfortunately it wasn't a good experience. My voucher of 70CHF was not accepted because it has expired. Unfortunately the café didn't accommodate me. They didn't want to extend the voucher. It's a shame, because these 70 francs were paid. Sad that the service and the owner are so unaccommodating here. This is not customer friendly and therefore gets a bad rating from me.

Worst pancakes I've ever eaten. They just weren't pancakes. Really disappointing! The service was unmotivated, slow and uninterested in whether we wanted something or not. Price-performance ratio is zero! Really very expensive for what it was. It's not worth a star! We were very disappointed!

We were there for breakfast and decided on a sandwich. Unfortunately, the “Le Healthy” came out very dry, the olive oil on it was hard to detect, and the bread was also a bit dry. However, the coffee was very tasty and the service tried hard and managed the whole store pretty well on their own.

Retro style cafe. Very friendly service. However, if necessary, plan for longer waiting times. There is often only one person in service. But it's worth it. Slightly higher price range. Good selection of drinks (matcha latte, turmeric latte...)

Like many, the Avant Gouz also raised its prices some time ago - unfortunately, in my opinion, absolutely too much for what is offered. I generally find that when a restaurant raises its prices, the standard of service must either remain the same or be raised as well. Unfortunately, that's not the case at Avant Gouz: on a very crowded Saturday or Sunday, there are just 1 or 2 people working in service. You wait forever for your food, the waitress only speaks English, when you ask something she disappears and you only get an answer if you ask. It's a shame because, as many have mentioned, the food is quite tasty. Unfortunately, it's just a place that I no longer want to support.

The food itself was delicious. But not recommended at lunchtime: the four of us waited around 40 minutes (!) for our sandwiches... that's definitely not okay! And the place was almost empty...

Very cute brunch place. The waitress was extremely busy, and seemed to be the only waitress. However, she was still kind and efficient. The pancake was fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, cooked perfectly. The omelette was probably the best omelette I’ve had in Europe. Plenty of goat cheese, fluffy eggs, and the signature shape. Prices were reasonable. I’ll definitely be returning here.

Good, beautifully prepared food, sometimes a bit oversalted and bread of low quality (e.g. burger bread under Oeuf Benedict..). Large selection of coffee drinks including milk alternatives. Unfortunately, service is catastrophic; not efficient: for things that can be done in one go, they sometimes run 4 times, which makes the atmosphere hectic and requires a lot of patience. Going there with a lot of hunger and a Swiss mindset is not recommended. Otherwise, the style is hipster and residential, if the words exist as a description.

Very good restaurant for a brunch! A spot to discover by yourself, with family or friends. The food has a lot of varieties and a lot of extras that you can add. The drinks (matcha latte, macchiato and ice tea) were very very good! The food was a bit salty for all of us but it had flavour and it was very fresh. The staff was lovely and trilingual, I really appreciated the service!

The service is very very slow. Very lovely ladies but they cannot handle many clients at the same time. The food took over an hour to arrive and we had to remind them twice. The drinks arrived after the food. Very clumsy service and food wasn’t great. My sandwich was way too salty. Not even hot anymore. I think its only one person in the kitchen who also is overwhelmed with the orders.

The food tastes good, but the waiting time is really terrible, we waited over an hour for our food. The service wasn't unfriendly, but not really motivated either. You're happy to wait a while for fresh food, but not more than an hour.

I can't recommend it if you're in a hurry, we had to wait over 1 hour for the food and after we asked where our food was, we had to wait another 10 minutes... given that the prices here are so overpriced, it's not worth the wait ...an absolute disgrace.

The pancakes are fantastic, the coffee and muesli are so-so. The service is underground - unmotivated, unfriendly. In the kitchen, the dishwasher is unloaded without any consideration for losses - my small children could do this more quietly. It's a shame, the restaurant itself is very nice.

I wanted to save leftover food through Too Good To Go, ordered in the morning around 10 a.m., pickup time according to the app was 2 to 2:30 p.m., was there at 2:10 p.m. and the shop was simply closed and no one was there! Luckily I was able to easily report the problem via the app and get my money refunded, very anti-social and I definitely won't be going there again! I would like to give minus stars for the useless effort, but unfortunately that's not possible

I’ve been here before and enjoyed it in the past. Today, we came for brunch. Our food took 1 hour and 15 mins to arrive after ordering and when it came out was super underwhelming. My pancake was cold and the consistency of a cookie - all burnt and crumbly. The entire time we waited, none of the staff came to check if we were ok, or wanted more to drink. When we asked to check on the food after over an hour, they seemed really annoyed. Overall, really disappointing

The food and coffee is good. Unfortunately the waiting time and the service are not. You wait a very long time for the food, the waitress doesn't speak German and only speaks French.

We actually went there for brunch, but then we found a great, refreshing menu and the irresistible Shakshuka on the neighboring table. Of course, I want it too and also the avocado bread. Everything even better than expected, thank you. Unconventionally different and very tasteful, also the service from Ines, excellent and nice. I also got the recipe tip from Ines, but no, even if I try the Shakshuka at home, I'll be happy to come back. Merci merci merci!

For the price, this restaurant failed to meet expectations in it's entirety. Why would I spend 80-120 CHF for this mediocre breakfast when I can go somewhere else cheaper.... The menu is confusing and no set breakfasts, all the additions make it feel cheap and a money squeeze. The food was not the quality I expected.. for 89 CHF for 2 people the breakfast was small and terrible quality. I do not recommend this restaurant

We chose the Avant Gouz after researching on the internet, after we were impressed by the menu on the website with fine brunch menus at a good price/performance ratio (22-25chf). Unfortunately, we found out on site that the menu was out of date and no “menu” was offered anymore apart from a classic breakfast. The individual components could be purchased for a large additional charge (5-7chf per addition), so putting together the menu we chose would have cost a good 10chf more. We also discovered that you even had to order butter and spread with the bread that came with it, as well as maple syrup with the pancakes. The service wasn't unfriendly, but rather disinterested. Unfortunately, she didn't speak any German either, which can be a problem in Basel (fortunately English was fine). The food itself was very good, hence 2 stars.

This would actually be a great and cute little restaurant. If only the service were better... Unfortunately, extremely unprofessional service. Runs back to the counter several times past full tables with empty hands and forgets the cutlery even the third time. Unfortunately the food was cold by then. All in all the food would be great. But every visit turns into stress and that's no fun. The first thing I learned in service was NLL (Never Running Empty). This still needs to be learned.

I had the opportunity to have brunch at the Avant Gouz restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes offered. The choice is varied and the products are fresh and quality. But what really made the difference was the impeccable service from Soumia who was very attentive and professional throughout our meal. She was able to advise us on the dishes to choose and respond to all our requests. I highly recommend this restaurant for a successful brunch and quality service.

Far too expensive, value for money is not right at all. Service staff spoke zero German. Full ashtrays from the predecessors were left on the table. There was no water for coffee... My food was tasty. The others' omelettes were dry and unseasoned. Was def. the first and last time

DANGER! Pancakes have aniseed and poppy seeds in them and that's not on the menu, a huge no-go! We also had to wait 1 hour for the food and the sandwich bread was very hard. Unfortunately very disappointing and far too expensive for the whole thing.

A few days ago I was at Avant Gouz for the first time in a long time. I was really happy to order one of the famous Avant Gouz Brunch Selections, which are listed in various versions online in the menu. Unfortunately, these were not available on the menu on site and could not be ordered upon request. I wanted to share a sandwich with my colleague, but when we ordered we were told curtly: "no sandwiches". It should be mentioned here that the 6-page menu card only consists of sandwiches on 1.5 pages...that was very irritating. We then decided on French toast and pancakes. Neither was good. The French toast was very "solid" - almost hard - and lukewarm. The pancake was almost cold in the middle, which is why we have to assume that both products were pre-cooked and only warmed up briefly. A fresh pancake or French toast is airy, juicy and hot! It wasn't cleared up for a long time, we sat for a long time in front of our empty plates and glasses. We weren't even asked if we wanted something new to drink, not even when it was cleared away. The staff were semi-motivated and couldn't speak a word of German. Communication was in broken English or French, which sometimes made it very awkward when taking the order. It's incredibly disappointing for me to see what has become of the Avant Gouz. What was a great brunch spot with a unique selection a few years ago has now become an unsympathetic mass fare with pre-cooked food and ready-made drinks. Unfortunately only a shadow of its former self. That was my last visit for the time being.

Very tasty and a great menu selection! The restaurant is very simple and you have to be very lucky to get a seat, especially on weekends.

The restaurant was very loud and crowded, with people crammed in between other guests. The waitresses didn't speak German. The waiting time was relatively long and you could only pay from “certain” waitresses, the actual waitress brushed us off. Coffee in normal glasses that will burn your fingers. The food was ok but nothing special. In summary, unfortunately it didn't convince me.

May be a good place for a cosy breakfast on a lazy Sunday. But I cannot recommend this place for lunch. Takes forever just to be told that dishes aren’t available. It’s loud and tables are sticky. Gundeli has so many better places, no reason to have mediocre food here.

Now this was a one of a kind Benedict 🧐 in a good way. When you choose the plain option there, you basically get a bread+an egg+plenntyy of hollandaise ^^ but super delish! Loved the atmosphere in the café in general; shabby chic I might call it, relaxed environment. It was pretty much empty when I visited it, so the service was swift. Final note: the tea brand they opted for, Sirocco, has the highest quality in Switzerland as far as I'm concerned, fyi.

The worst Brunch we ever had in Basel. Super loud and crowded, the waitresses have no basic training to serve the customers. We had to wait for 40 minutes until the food arrived. The pancake tasted strange. Something in the food was not ok, my son even thrown up the whole meal immediately after eating. We will never go there again!

Small, low key, unassuming, stylish brunch place. Atmosphere is absolutely great, staff helpful/friendly - it's a true gem. I thought that the Buddha bowl was nothing out of the ordinary, but pancakes way better than the average home made, not to mention the delicious golden milk!

Contrary to the information on the homepage, no reservations are accepted. The location has very tight seating, the waitress forgets orders or takes a disproportionately long time for simple drinks...

Really delicious food (menu doesn't match the website though), but the staff is inattentive and it's a shame that you can't make a reservation - luckily we got the last table at 11 on Saturday

Stressed staff. Unfortunately there are far too few and that's why you have to wait a long time. They also forgot certain things and we had to remind them several times. Even though we ordered something else to drink, they came and asked us to leave (as many were waiting for a table). Even though the food was very good, we won't be coming back.

We were 3 people waiting for a free table (as only tables for 2 were free) once a big table freed, a group of 4 came in and they were privileged even though we waited for 10min for a table to free. When asked why they were given the table the waitress said because they are 4. So clearly no customer service but priviliged one person more ordering - all for business! No way we’re going back there

I used to like to go here. The food is tasty, when it arrives. The last 3 times I was there we waited an hour for the food and coffe. The dishes come in seperate and if something was wrong you have to wait again forever. For the rest of the stay (a few hours) nobody ever came again to check on us or take the dishes. It is a real pitty, they could have so much more success with better and more friendly staff. But this is no enjoyment.

Very complete brunch menu between sweet and savory, medium-high prices but very high quality, we liked everything from the centrifuges to the pancakes to the eggs and quiches!

The staff isn't exactly the most attentive and could be a little more on their toes. We then took the coffee that we actually wanted to order somewhere else.

Stumbled across this cafe, great coffee, great breakfast, would 100% recommend.

Nice little local breakfast and brunch place it has a lot of variety of food selection. The place seems to be very busy by the time it gets closer to lunch or brunch time and they open at 9:00 so I recommend if you can wake up and come slightly earlier just go ahead. The place is cozy and comfortable. if I had more time, I would just to sit there and enjoy tea or coffee and do some reading with some snacks in the meantime.

Place was fully packed when we arrived, but staff managed to find a two seats for us, which was super nice. Waiting for the order was about 40 minutes, I enjoyed good omelet and tea, but didn’t like french toasts much - it was a bit burned and dry for my taste. Can recommend this place, if you don’t mind waiting!
