Café & Conditorei 1842 in Zürich

You just can't compare with the former Café Schober, then everything will be fine!

Anyone who finds fault with this cafe is complaining at a very, very high level. Even if the service is sometimes a bit bumpy, it is always friendly and tries to fulfill the guests' every wish. A unique place with lots of delicious offerings and a very special charm.

Lovely place! Must try their hot chocolate with marshmellows, coffee, lemon cake and other items!

It used to be a great place to come to but not anymore. Upon arrival, the staff at the front (all 5) seemed to be more involved in a discussion than looking to the guests. There was a long queue all to the way to the door but we were all ignored by the 5 employees at the front who decided that was the best time for a group huddle. The employee who finally addressed me was rude and cold. The only saving grace was the waitress for our table, who was kind and sweet and seemed to be making up for her colleague who was doing a great job ignoring us and the other customers. I used to recommend this as a great place to those new to Zürich but I won’t be doing that anymore.

Nice food, friendly staff, nice view and good decoration presentation inside the restaurant. If you're nearby, don't hesitate to get a table inside.

Delicious sweets, that's right! Dingy..., dusty (lamps, pictures, floors, toilet, decorations, ventilation grilles) Such a shame for this beautiful restaurant and ambience!

Not recommended for tourists. The waiter told us that there were no available tables upstairs (in the good part of the place), so he sat us close to the entrance - probably the worst part of the café. Immediately afterwards, he sat all the next four groups of (Swiss) people upstairs. Coincidentally, all the people in the first floor were not Swiss. The chocolate is not good and I did not appreciate the tea. By the way, the place is beautiful: this is the only reason why I chose to rate two stars instead of one.

This time very disappointed! I called in advance to reserve a table, when we arrived and I said I have reserved the lady was very rude and said the few people in front of you are whether they have reserved or not. Waited too long at the table for the waitress, ordered a Sachertorte that had nothing to do with a Sachertorte! This one was with MARZIPAN! neither noted at the bottom of the display case nor in the menu! I'm intolerant of almonds and the waitress who served us couldn't be seen for half an hour after she put everything out! In the end you still have to pay, a waitress who has no idea what is in the products she sells and does not control her service area. Won't come anymore!

Best hot chocolate ever! Just Oder the classic one and enjoy!

Nice to visit a place, and find that they consistently have the great things you find everytime and even better.

We were ignored at the wait-to-be-seated sign, the service was condescending and unfriendly, and the hot chocolate was spilled. No comparison to the Schober from before. We don't go there anymore.

Definitely worth a visit. The cafe, which seems inconspicuous from the outside, is a real eye-catcher from the inside. We sat on the first floor and felt like we had been transported back in time. The ambience reminded me a little of one of the traditional Viennese coffee houses, the service was friendly and courteous. The selection of cakes, tarts and other delicacies was large and a small selection of warm dishes was also offered.

I heard this cafe is nice. After I visited there, I understood that. Cake is nice, I ate such a nice cake after a long time since I moved to Switzerland. Stuffs are kind in spite of they are busy. The cost is not so expensive. I definitely visit there again! I went there because it was recommended to me, and it was a really nice cafe where I could relax. The cake is delicious, and a small cookie comes with the coffee ☺️ There was a line of people waiting by the time I left, but all the staff were friendly. Recommended as the price is not too high!

The cake was very good. The milk coffee was rather mediocre and very small for the price. However, the service was unfriendly and very condescending. It feels like you have to wait forever both when placing an order and to place it. We ended up having to speak to the waitress who was wiping the tables next to us ourselves. There are much better cafes with much nicer staff. I can't recommend it.

We were going to return from the door because of the comments, so we decided to enter. The interior is very warm in terms of design. The hot chocolates were also really nice.

It is a beautiful place that takes you back in time. It has different areas for seating, and each one has its own touch. Our waitress was friendly and brought us two taps of water to the café and hot chocolate without asking. Unfortunately there are only three stars because the price-performance ratio is not entirely appropriate. Unfortunately, the Flat White didn't take much effort to make (at least that was the taste) and cost a whopping CHF 7.00. Still a great place that I would go to again and again because of its ambience…

Very touristy but the atmosphere is authentic. It could be annoying if too many Asian tourists take photos of the interior with their cell phones and immediately leave. Kitchen and service good.

Superb service🫶🏻 my friend accidentally drop a cup of coffee on the floor, staff comes to help us and clean immediately. Coffee is nice and the decoration is very stylish.

Waited quite a long time, normal chocolate milk but too bitter, cheesecake on the other hand was great. Staff can't really speak German. Were served 3 times when ordering because half of them were forgotten. The price is therefore not fair. Don't let the redhead serve you.!!

This place has an incredible atmosphere of the 19th century, tasty pastry and great coffee. It seems that they also have a seating area, but we stopped only for a quiet coffee grab. Their passion fruit panacotta absolutely insane!!!!

Unfortunately, our order was taken completely wrong by the lady with the dyed hair, we had to order something again three times until then the hot chocolate was cold chocolate. For the price you would expect good service.

The cafe was half empty when i went with a friend. We were assigned a table, but as we saw it was very empty we said we‘d prefer to sit just opposite where it was more cosy. The waitress told us in an annoyed tone „yes but that table need to be cleared and cleaned“. We said that‘s ok, we are fine with that (but actually not with her rude manner!). She made the same comments to other guests who arrived just after us and occupied a table with dirty dishes. The double espresso looked like an americano! I had a blackt tee, that‘s all : 15.- chf. AVOID : you do not feel welcome here and it is far too expensive. It‘s a real shame because the location itself is beautiful.

Save yourself the visit. Empty tables but they didn't want to give up the 3 seater space for 2 people. The service is overwhelmed and apparently we don't know what a latte machiato is. For such an old café, you would think they would know what makes a good coffee.

The best apple strudel I have ever tasted! The place is so beautiful, pity I did not took photos! I passed by and felt like grabbing something little. For me it’s a must to visit this place when I am in Zurich next time! The flat out was amazing and this vanilla souse… incredible. Combined together, you are in heaven.

The big lady curly black hair (waitress) is so rude first she was rude to me and then when i tired to order at the counter for the cake she told me i cant order here but another customer in front of me just order at the counter she did it on purpose and laughed Bad service she should learn some manner I asked her nicely but this is how she treated us

The environment in which you are welcomed is very beautiful. The place is divided on several levels, and in my case I was seated on the first floor. I found the style and decorations particularly cute, especially at Christmas time. I wanted to avoid taking the usual Italian hot drinks in order to try something new and I must say that I didn't really appreciate what I chose. In addition to the drink, I also tried some desserts, which looked very inviting, but which again I didn't particularly like. In particular the panna cotta which has absolutely nothing of panna cotta, or at least as I know it. Obviously I can't blame the place too much, tastes are tastes and they are mainly personal. I would definitely give it a second chance trying new things.

From the moment you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with a display case full of desserts that look delicious. The decoration is spectacular. It takes you to another time. The attention from the 5-star staff. We travel with small children and patience is always appreciated. Bathrooms in excellent condition. I clarify this point because I travel with children and personally I value the condition of the toilets. We ordered omelet with cheese and ham, very good. My wife ordered some eggs Benedict and from her face I could tell that they were spectacular. Cappuccino and natural water. For children orange juice. I recommend saving room for dessert as they have many options. I would definitely return

A beautiful and long-established pastry shop in Zurich's old town. It's worth making a reservation to get a good spot. The interior provides an insight into the long history of the business. The display right at the entrance is very beautiful and makes your mouth water. Sometimes around three people stand behind the counter and continue to talk to each other instead of greeting you, so it can take a moment before you are seated. The prices are in the upper price segment, unfortunately the cappuccino looked like it had been sitting around for a few minutes before it was served and was also rather small. Vermicelle tart was okay. I go here more for the ambience. The hot chocolate melange is recommended, but there is also one just as good across the street in Schwarzenbach 😋 Possibly is the staff understaffed? Two were very friendly (young lady and gentleman), the rest less so.

Driven by the many positive reviews and the sign outside that claimed to prepare the best hot chocolate in the city, I went in with perhaps too many expectations and got a takeaway hot chocolate (there was no place to sit) And at the price of 7 francs for a glass of common takeaway hot chocolate I expected much more...

A nostalgic café in the middle of Zurich, very cozy, a must for every visitor, a cozy meeting place for locals, a refuge from the cold drizzle. With mind-blowing patisserie! It's usually pretty full, so be patient!

Had the hot chocolate, which was said to be the best in Zurich. It's a lovely place, we had to wait a while before getting a table. On the expensive side , however, most of the things/places in Switzerland are but worth a try if in the area. Had an array of pastries on display but we came just for the hot chocolate 😊

I loved this place, the style is that of a slightly old fashioned tea room. From the outside it looks like a very small café, but inside it is spread over three floors and has plenty of seats. We went during the Christmas period so the whole place was decorated, with beautiful garlands and Christmas trees everywhere. Come here if you want to have a rich and tasty breakfast or brunch. The choice is really vast, I took the egg benedict with salmon, it was really delicious, and an equally good Chinese green tea, a quality leaf tea, certainly not the ones in sachets. In reality there is also a huge choice of pastries and viennoiseries, and they say their hot chocolate is very good. I haven't tried it but it will definitely be for another time because the one the lady next to me got looked good. Don't miss this place if you come to Zurich!

Terrible service! Huge attitude difference! The location arrangement and the service attitude are all very different! We were treated differently. The desserts and coffee were neither delicious nor tasty. When we wanted to check out, we had to go to the cashier to pay, while others could settle the bill directly at the table. The answer to the question was "the waiter is too tired". The waiter was happily chatting with other guests. He was just trying to show off to us, but he was looking for trouble when he went there.

I once ordered scrambled eggs in this store and got food poisoning. The scrambled eggs smelled strange right from the start but I didn't think anything of it. 10 minutes later while walking towards central I had to throw up and puke out the scrambled eggs and later had to go to the hospital. I wrote them a private email but nothing came from management, no apology, nothing. The service was also a disaster because almost no one spoke German. I warn you don't buy scrambled eggs or cream slices or anything that has to do with eggs. The canapés also taste very strange and have nothing to do with other canapés. This store is extremely dangerous!!! Still waiting today for an apology. Stay away from anything that has to do with salmon, eggs, tuna

Schober the previous cafe was awesome and a beautiful romantic place ... cut foward 1842 the name of the new establishment is as meaningless as the number. We waited for more than 10 minutes for the host, to be seated. Once seated the waitress gave us the creepiest smile asking who had let us in???? The average hot chocolate with milk skin arrived yuck and a ok cappuccino... maybe she spit in the drink who knows she warned us that we have to leave once a group arrives .... where to go, the guest as we thought we asked... oh upstairs. So lucky we are, we think as she banged at the table ..... ???? Is she gonna hit us with her friend(frightening)ly gesture ? Thanks to the spirits her shift eneded and a friendly face waiter arrived and collected her tip .... never again. Hostile service, overpriced, mediocre drinks ....

Although the atmosphere in this café is great, the terrible service made this experience very unpleasant. A tall, young male waiter spoke to me in a rude tone, saying, "This is not a good place for you to take photos because I am working." It's unfortunate that I don't know his name to specifically identify him, but I hope the establishment can address the service attitude of this male waiter.

Cute little place, hard to find because they don't have a big sign outside. Nice cakes, friendly staff but they were so busy we have to wait for order/service/bill. Overall, pretty good esp the coffee and cakes. Smallish place downstairs but I think there are more seating upstairs.

The shop has both savory and dessert items. The staff provide good service. There are quite a lot of seats. Sitting on the 2nd floor of the shop. Tasty snacks. Inside the shop there are restrooms. The price of each dessert is around 8 CHF.

Such a beautiful and cozy place full of Christmas vibe, the perfect place for breakfast or afternoon tea in the Christmas season. However, the hot chocolate is overrated, it is nothing but normal, even a little bit watery. The lemon tart was very much to my disappointment. The appearance is pretty and delicate, but the overall tart was too sweet and the tart crust was soaked in syrup. The breakfast set with croissant and Swiss oatmeal my friends ordered was much complimented, especially the Swiss oatmeal. Suggest to make a reservation beforehand.

Hot chocolate is basically just milk, hardly any chocolate. It's a long way from being the best chocolate in City. You are essentially paying for the place. A unique pleasure, the kind that you only go once. There is a huge rush, so you have to wait on Sunday afternoon until something becomes available. In and of itself a good prospect of great experiences. The ambience is nostalgic but run down. It needed brighter light and the interior needed a makeover. Chipped corners, scratched parquet... Everything is old but unkempt. The service is like snail mail. The products are fine, but all in all nothing exceptional. So it just gives an average result and you wonder why people want to go there so badly when there are better places.

You can get the tastiest cakes in town here. The always friendly service staff will assign you a table after a while of waiting. The hot Ovo and the delicious cake + quiche as well as the cozy atmosphere! It's worth the wait!!!

The restaurant boasts a stunning, fairy-tale-like interior, but unfortunately, the service was subpar, and the baked goods seemed less than fresh. The brunch menu had a limited selection. What disappointed us the most was the staff's attitude; they smoked near the door, and the smell permeated inside. When we asked them not to smoke by the door, they responded, "This is the staff's designated break area; we all smoke here."

It's awful. You have to pay 2 francs extra for a bun with your eggs. That's very petty. For a small, pale bun, you have to pay 2 francs extra. You can't just come in and relax. They bring you a coffee with one dish and the other person has to just wait. I will never come here again. Very beautiful interior and bad concept . The price absolutely does not correspond to the service.

We waited 10 min before our waitress took our drinking order. Another 15 min before the order came...2 Chai Latte and 2 croissants. When we wanted to pay, she just didn't show up, so after another 10 min we got up and went to pay downstairs in the bakery.

In the old town of Zurich we find this beautiful pastry-cafeteria open since 1842. Three rooms, a terrace and a beautiful patio. Kindness when showing us a table. They give us a choice between the different rooms. Perhaps the one on the second floor is the most beautiful and cozy. Cakes, pastries, sweets and chocolates. We ordered chocolate with clouds. An apple strudel with vanilla cream that is served separately to suit your taste, an Apple Pie and a two chocolate mousse. Everything spectacular.

We were there with two small children, but unfortunately the service staff did not take my daughter's wishes into account. So she had to order two cups of hot chocolate, which the children didn't drink because it was way too much. It would have been nice if one cup had been divided into two espresso cups. Unfortunately, my chailatte was very small and was only brought in a normal coffee cup, which I'm unfortunately not familiar with. The ambience is nice and the service was also friendly.

Beautiful place, that takes you to past times. They have comfortable chairs and good black tea, drinkable hot chocolate, and nice toilets. Unfortunately, the staff is incompetent, it takes forever to order, it takes forever to bring the order, it takes forever to pay, and all the way the staff looks like you are bothering them and they are not listening to you. All of the members of the staff keep looking confused.

We were there yesterday and tried the tomato mozzarella sandwich. It was super juicy and simply a must. The service was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely come again when we are in Zurich.

Good experience. Is it the best hot chocolate in my opinion? No. But our tour guide recommended it and figured to give it a try.

Despite the good atmosphere and food, the terrible service made the experience unpleasant. Unfortunately, we don't know the name of the employee who helped us, but it happened on the second floor of the establishment, on 10/25, in the morning.

Very nice, intact ambience which reflects its charm. Followed by one by one Professional friendly service. And a convincing selection of homemade (salty-sweet) dishes. Any time!

One of the cutest cafe and dessert places in the old town. The out area works on a first come first served basis. The decor of the mezzanine is really charming. Totally recommend it!
