Oepfelchammer in Zürich

Were there for the first time! A house that has to assert itself between tradition and modernity is never an easy task but with top service (certain but generous), an ingenious starter (Marrowbein with vodka shot) and a confident Züri-Geschnetzeltes (that doesn't quite come close to the Kronenhalle) - it has mastered the Oepfelchammer! What's really great is that the historic chamber with the beam test still has this student character. Compared to other restaurants, everything here seems simpler, less complicated and therefore more charming... We'd really like to come back!

Wow. Such a great place. The atmosphere was fantastic. The service quite good and the food delicious. We started with the ravioli started…… yumm. Then the better lettuce salad with apples. This was a well balanced salad. Loved it. For the entree. I had the Zurich Veal in mushroom sauce. It was so darn good. My friend got the beef spatzel. It was delicious as well. Come check this place out. Oh, and a delicious bottle of Italian wine.

Unfortunately I had a rather poor experience in this restaurant today. Waiter talks way too loudly and drowns out the entire room. You can hardly hear the person you are talking to. In addition, it is far too narrow and far too warm there. Starters were good, drinks were far below standard. The highlight was the main course: we had fillet and black angus, at a price of 52chf. We thought that a steak awaited us now. But this was just a kind of goulash to our disappointment. Any requests from us for a replacement were blocked, according to the motto “eat it or leave it”. At most, the option for something else was given, but we would have to pay the full price for both dishes Of course that put a damper on our mood for the evening, so we got out quickly. I saw it as a negative thing to be treated like an idiot and not even offered insight or goodwill. I would recommend everyone to make sure what they order there, the owners are definitely not accommodating. My date was also visibly disappointed in the end.

Everything about this restaurant is remarkably good. It may seem inconspicuous from the outside, but as soon as you step through the door you quickly realize that you have landed in a wonderful place. The hosts are extremely friendly and uncomplicated. We had made reservations for two people, but came as a group of four and asked if they could possibly accommodate four. This was made possible. The restaurant exudes a homely atmosphere and you feel like you have been transported back in time. There is enough space. Our hosts Marco and Thomas were fantastic. They were incredibly attentive and the food was first class. The hash browns were particularly outstanding.

A real gem is hidden behind the inconspicuous entrance door in Niederdorf. The small, cozy dining rooms with lots of wood take you back to a bygone era. The restaurant is so inviting and cozy, you won't want to leave. As a guest you are treated like a king. Friendly, attentive, authentic... in short, just likeable. The food matches the ambience. Hearty Zurich cuisine, beautifully presented, large portions and the Züri Gschnätzlets is definitely in the top 3 in Zurich. Reservations are strongly recommended, as is a visit to the Oepfelkammer :-)

Really sad to see a restaurant that has always been an icon in Zurich, trying to get advantages from a reservation of a table of 13 people, where “only” 10 people showed up (2 of the people got covid). They charged us the full price of 13 people claiming they made a “bigger salad” (coop has better salads) and more meat (just go to Zeughauskeller, much better food). We gave them 100 chf of tips and when asked about the extra number of people the waiter was completely rude. Really sad about the experience, because the challenge is incredibly cool. If you ever go to this place, make sure you check your bill twice. UPDATE - Answer to owner: Dear Mr. thanks a lot for your long answer. However, this is just a copy and paste of what you have answered to my friend. I did not call you a scammer, even though the policy you have for cancelations could suggest otherwise. This is one of those places one has to visit sooner or later when you are in Zürich. The building itself is already worth a visit by itself because of the history it has and still shows. The rooms where you eat are very homey with a lot of wood which makes you feel very at home. Good thing the food and wine are go along with it - both were excellent! One dish had a little more salt than to my personal taste but nevertheless it was totally worth cleaning the plate completely. There is also a possibility to try the house challenge which involves climbing over a wooden log at the ceiling. Definately will be back for that one.
