Safran in Solothurn

I am a Zurich resident and was surprised by the unfriendly behavior of the service. Terribly little food and very expensive not recommended. Lettuce and a slice of tomato cost €8 scandal! Definitely to be avoided.

Very small portions and poor quality of food, not recommended. The place is dirty and not very elegant.

We were at the Safran Restaurant for lunch on February 6, 2024 and chose a lunch menu from the weekly menu. First there was a house-style lentil soup (with a lemon wedge to vary the flavor), which surprised us extremely positively. Afterwards we had chicken korma (tender chicken meat in a mild, creamy, slightly sweet sauce with cashew nuts) with some lentil vegetables and basmati rice. The menu definitely exceeded our expectations. The host is extremely charming, friendly and, if you have any questions, explains everything very competently. The general service is also very rehearsed and attentive. Really a positive surprise in Solothurn, just a few steps outside the old town.

The food is authentic Indian. The service, the chef and the manager were once again at the top level. No wishes were left unfulfilled.

Delicious food, very friendly and courteous staff. Since it was so tasty, the portions could have been a little bigger :P

Really good food, but the portions have become smaller and the price higher. Value for money is no longer right. A family can't afford that. What a shame!

I ordered Butter chicken, but Even when the owner was very considerate to explain that they prepare butter chicken different, I was very disappointed to received a delivery of a completely different dish as I was longing for. Butter chicken is an extremely creamy buttery red sauce, instead I received a curry yellow watery sauce dish. 45 chf but still hungry here, then I couldn’t eat this dish, and that after a long work day :-( disappointed

My experience is a very different and special , we were crossing Switzerland and driving towards France and it was quite late in the evening and weee craving for some good food , when we reached this place we got to know that the kitchen in closed but realising that we weee tourist and with kids Mr Saleem was very kind to make us feel comfortable and take our order , we are extremely thankful to him . The cherry on the top - the food was awesome . I totally recommend this place and next time when I visit Switzerland I will make sure I will visit this place . Highly recommended!

Safran Restaurant is best Indian restaurant in Solothurn. Whether you dine in or get delivery, their dishes are full of flavors. The quality stays great even for takeout. Plus, their friendly service adds a nice touch to the experience.

Good Indian restaurant, with great authentic dishes. Very fast and friendly service. Very accommodating and nice. Unfortunately there are only a few tables outside and directly on the street or to the parking lot. But otherwise absolutely recommendable and ok for the price. Best restaurant in Solothurn providing people experience of Indian spices (Spice means not hot chilly). I visited this place after 2+ weeks I entered Switzerland and I really liked the food the very first day and now I am visiting this place for 3-4 times a week. To owner : Keep running Indian Gazals, it makes overall enrichment and makes life easy. I really felt the best after eating and hearing the choice of Gazals you plaid.

We love Indian cuisine and enjoy eating at Safran. Unfortunately, this time the service after the main course left something to be desired. No dessert, no other drinks, no service. A pity!

Criticism, based on two visits several months apart, goes particularly to the (presumably) boss there who serves the guests. Contrary to all the reviews that praise him and the service, which is the same as he is the only one who takes orders and collects them. At times it seems friendly, but it seems quite artificial. If you observe how he behaves towards guests and staff over a longer period of time, a different picture of him emerges. He seems irritated quite quickly and sometimes reacts harshly, while in the next moment he acts overly friendly again. Everything, just not a natural friendliness that comes from the person, but is intended to serve the business and you notice that again and again. It's also annoying that he spends every free second sitting behind the laptop behind the cash register and no longer notices when the guests are ready to order or pay. Attention and overview of what is needed in the service are completely missing. Walks around the entire restaurant empty-handed and doesn't even look across the room. On the last visit, the daily menu didn't correspond to what you got. Ambience functional, nothing more.

The lunch is really simple and poor, no taste and the plate not at all garnished, they didn't make the effort to satisfy the customer. They have a good dinner menu but I don't recommend going for lunch.

It’s my second order in this place. The hospitality us friendly, the food is good but when I payed cash I had to check the always if I received back the right amount of money back. Because the gave me less back then I should receive. A bit “strange” with the money back !

First of all, the ambience, which seemed uninviting and cozy to us. The “romance candles” don’t really help much either. Then we actually had to wait a good hour for our food. Maybe it was just a bad day, but as a guest I don't really want to hear the suggestion that the kitchen has to deal with a lot of takeaway orders. The food was just okay. Somewhat watery curry sauce in the lamb dish and dahl, which was not particularly tasty, seemed a bit carelessly prepared. The meat, however, was tender and therefore ok. After this evening, there is little reason for us to dine at Safran again.

Of course I'll be back soon. Today, October 22nd, is my 64th birthday. We booked a table with you at 6 p.m.❤️

Ordered à la carte, received daily menu, but was charged the full price I had a very unpleasant experience at this restaurant. During lunch it only seems to offer daily menus, while à la carte is not possible. I wanted to order butter chicken, while the daily menu had chicken korma as a poultry dish (daily menu approx. CHF15). I was served the daily menu Chicken Korma, which normally costs 15 francs, but I was charged Butter Chicken, which costs around 30 francs à la carte. The two dishes are easy to tell apart. The dish Butter Chicken is a kind of curry with chicken meat and a spiced tomato butter sauce, while Korma is prepared with yogurt, cream, nut and seed pastes or coconut milk. This is how it is described in his own menu. The korma itself was good and I happily finished it, but I was charged for another dish that was double the extra charge. During the meal, various customers came who ordered take-away and asked the owner if he would be open again in the evening because they would like to eat à la carte again. This means that only the various daily menus are served at lunchtime and ordering à la carte is not possible. When I confronted the owner about it, he insisted that this was his way of making butter chicken. It's like going to an Italian restaurant, ordering a carbonara, but then you get a bolognese and the chef tries to tell you that this is his type of carbonara. The owner acted deliberately fraudulently, assuming that the customer, as a European, had no idea about Indian food and that this was how the scam worked. That's why I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat at this restaurant

Mango lassi was ok. Tomato soup very fine. Daal wasn't anything special like you're used to from Indian cuisine...dry rice. Bad service, bread was cleared away in front of the HG. 🤔

I visited the restaurant for the 3rd or 4th time last month, I'll just say that I know a lot about Indian dishes because I worked in Indian restaurants for 3 years and I always visit such restaurants. What I experienced this time was a disgrace: We went there for lunch and ordered the usual lunch for around 18.50 - it was chicken korma, served with a light yellow sauce like everywhere else. Since our favorite dish is butter chiken, I asked if I could order that? At first it was said, NO, we don't have that at the moment. But after a short moment the boss came and asked, oh do you want butter chiken? I also bring it to you on a plate. Since it was on the plate, not even in the bowl, I assumed it came with the lunch price. But it's not that bad, I'm happy to pay over 30 francs for one of my favorite dishes. The boss gave us two identical dishes, one of which only had something sprinkled on it, some other spice. Otherwise 1:1 the same. And say butter chiken. It was really tasteless, even though we were hungry we both left half. The boss brought us the bill with an ala card price 😉. And the butter chiken and korma have identical sauces, only the meat is different.. So please don't take your customers for a fool.

The two of us ate here on a Tuesday evening. There wasn't that much going on there. The restaurant is large and there is a lot of space, which I think is great. Indian music is playing in the background. Delicious Indian food. The portions are rather small for the price. Nice service.

The food is very delicious, biryani, meat, chicken, masala, and bread. The restaurant is large, its seating is beautiful, and the staff’s treatment is excellent. The prices are high.

Very tasty food. The flatbreads are great and everyone is sure to find something tasty on the menu. #vegetarian There are minor drawbacks in terms of the ambience and the music, which is, in my opinion, too loud. But I'd love to come back...

Personally, I found the food to be rather average. Pretty bland and there was a lentil dish on the plate that wasn't on the menu. Service a bit too intrusive for my taste, although friendly. Price ok for Indian food. We were there at lunchtime with a small menu selection - maybe it would be better to try the entire menu in the evening.

It was our first time at Safran and we were unhappy with the starter. We had ordered a samosa that was still frozen. What did the boss do? He took the plate away from us, probably put it in the microwave and brought us the cut samosa back. That is not how it works! Main course was good.
