Sutter Begg – Bäckerei, Konditorei & Café in Basel

Unfortunately, the quality of the coffee has deteriorated significantly, which I find very unfortunate. Luckily there are other providers at the train station who have better coffee machines. The Schoggiweggli is still cult.

In quiet times, the customer is seen as an unwelcome interruption while chatting - this is the second time this has happened to us in a short space of time. We were ignored when we entered the shop, the salespeople (four, no other customers) continued to talk animatedly. Then finally a moment of calm, we made eye contact and wanted to make our wish known. Rejoiced too soon, it was just a breath of air, the conversation continued unabated. We then left the branch and received very friendly service from the competition.

Food is standard, but the second time I buy a pretzel and it is dry and hardly edible. Feels like it was from the day before or freshly thawed and baked for too long. I like the Sutter coffee, but at the Sbb Sutter I just get FlatWith with too much liquid milk and for the third time with a coffee and not double espresso, which makes it inedible and disgusting to drink. Unfortunately, I always have to get on the train quickly and therefore hardly have time to complain. Thank you anyway for your tireless efforts. Kindest.

Regular customer since the opening. I come almost every day and always get my cappuccino from Sutterbegg 98% of the time... so cappuccino is always a 9/10. I think it's great that the employees are slowly recognizing me and ordering the cappuccino even though I haven't had it yet...🥰😍 What I still fully understand, however, is that every morning there is a queue in front of the store (everyone in a row) even though three checkouts are open at the same time. If everyone were to queue like that (at every checkout) there would be no people standing outside in the cold and it would definitely be faster for customers as well as employees.

Usually friendly there. But as a bakery saleswoman in BASEL you should know what "Beggestaub" is... otherwise you've missed the job.

The team at the train station is great! Well-positioned, friendly and ready to joke even early in the morning. The Silserli are usually well salted and the coffee is delivered with a lot of love. Now the challenge: who will greet me by name first in the morning? Nice day

The vanilla peaks are amazing😍, and they have a diverse bread selection. Staff: was very friendly and accommodating! They laugh and joke, you can tell that there is joy in the work behind it, which is unfortunately something that is becoming increasingly rare in the retail trade! Furnishings: The counter looks a bit old, but otherwise it's a generally clean shop. I'd be happy to do it again!

Super quick service. They know how to keep the bussy train passenger rushing to the train happy.

Are they racists or very afraid to speak English? Not 1 but 2 of them walked away (pretending not to see me or pretending to be busy) when it was my turn to order. Edit after reply of owner: Of course you firmly deny being racists *roll eyes* but then you need to hire new staff who are better in being customer friendly because it's a reoccurring issue when reading the reviews. The trainings are definitely NOT helping the current staff. Aren't you tired of copy/pasting the same excuse every time someone calls you out on the service?

Unfriendly service at the SBB train station in Basel early in the morning and the espresso is not espresso, more like an American coffee...

I was surprised at how large their selection of pastries and breads is! There’s also lots of coffees and teas to choose from, the prices are very fair, and the personell is very friendly! I’ll definitely have to go back to try more of their pastries (today I had the almond pretzel, which was good, but too sweet for my liking).

I go here every day, it's my favorite bakery chain, but they get my order wrong once a week, I don't notice until I'm on the train due to rushing. It's always the same people who make the mistake, flamboyant guy with grey hair, and heavier lady with blonde hair, best to avoid them.

The saleswoman at the coffee counter at SBB station this morning at 8:25 was very unfriendly. I'm wondering whether I'll ever buy anything there again.

The goods are second-class not made by hand. If you look at the cheesecakes…they all look the same. A ready-made mix, like the one you can buy in Coop or Migros. That's why they're all so flat and it doesn't taste like cheese but like salt🧂. The cheesecake is also a disappointment.

Very disappointing quality. I have decided not to shop at Sutter Begg anymore. Croissants are often dry and almost hard. Exactly the same with the Grätimänn & Lentenwähen, very dry and very weak in taste. I don't even want to start talking about the chocolate cookies, I almost lost my teeth on them!

I regularly get my cappuccino and a Urigs Baby from this Sutter Begg branch early in the morning. I always receive very friendly service and the goods are in tip top condition. Keep it up, you're great!

I'm not sure whether I would have ever successfully left the station on the right train without Sutter's morning help in the form of Kafi and Schoggiweggli. ;) The employees are extremely friendly and super funny, even in the biggest crowds. I have the greatest respect for the miracle workers who operate the large coffee machine: they seemingly effortlessly memorize dozens of coffee requests at the same time, which are called out to them every second by their colleagues, and process them flawlessly in exactly the right order. Even when serving in the most hustle and bustle, people still smile, sprinkle extra chocolate powder in large clouds of dust and wish them a nice day. My leaky short-term memory and I would have long since been completely overwhelmed by the overwhelming flood of orders and sat in the corner with severe milk foam steam nozzle burns, hugging our legs tightly and rocking back and forth, wishing we could go back to a quiet bed. Cheers! Oh yes, the coffee is good too, cheaper in your own cup and even free every 11th time with the customer card. 😉

There was rave music playing.. Very very expensive butter bezel 🙄 Could kill a burglar with the baguette. People didn't give us any time to decide on the bread, which I think is very, very important. I mean it's BREAD??? Everyone needs time to think about it! All in all.. Mediocre bread experience.

Unfriendly staff! Service listless. One is serving, the others are in the corner gossiping/talking. Ignore customers. I thought it would be better with a change in staff, but the opposite happened. A pity.

Sutter is the name for best of Switzerland bakery and it stand to its name. I love it.

My favorite baker! Not only really nice staff, but also great prices and, above all, delicious coffee! The chocolate rolls are also highly recommended!

First of all, I'm only here in the reviews because of the gritty atmosphere and all the other Kiki doesn't interest me. To the Gritibänz “Raphi” The Gritibänz looks very simply made, no large decorative elements such as a scarf or hat, just the head, legs, arms, raisins as eyes, a classic Gritibänz. The taste is the best I've tasted so far, the dough is so light and airy that you'll want to eat a second one after the first one (which is what I did) The baking color seems a little light at first but after the taste test you notice that it was baked for just the right amount of time. Let's get to the only sticking point: the sporadic stinginess with the granulated sugar. My first copy today had enough granulated sugar on it, but the second one was missing a few grains on the breast. Now to my conclusion: As already mentioned above, the best I've tasted so far and therefore a clear recommendation! In terms of points, I give the Gritibänz a 9/10, as there is certainly still room for improvement.

Every morning I pick up my bowl from Sutter Begg at the train station. This bakery is just perfect. Super friendly staff and top service. What else could you wish for? A visit to Sutter is always a pleasant start to the morning for me. The goods are always well presented and taste delicious. I can only recommend the Schoggiweggli!

Unfortunately I can only agree with the previous comments. After the last rather disappointing visits (unfriendly service and very long waiting times, even if there were no customers and enough staff - obviously the Natel was more interesting at that moment) in this branch, I made one last attempt today. I wasn't greeted at all (as had happened the last few times), my Sutter card (which I placed clearly visible on my wallet at the beginning) was ignored and I was told with a rolled eye that I had the transaction on the debit card. The device was supposed to cancel, the coffee was carelessly pushed over the counter and there was no thank you and at the end neither a goodbye nor a 'nice'... and shortly after the coffee was 'pushed away', the saleswoman took a piece of chocolate mouth - at the coffee corner, clearly visible to all the customers (the shop was very busy with commuter traffic)... I found that to be quite inappropriate and irritated me, especially since my hands weren't washed afterwards. There are definitely friendly staff, I followed the conversations left and right today and was once again disappointed that I always catch the people who really spoil your desire for further visits and who make you feel out of place and totally unwanted to be. I worked in sales myself and I understand when someone has a bad day. But such incidents have unfortunately become more common in my experience and that's just not the way to treat customers. It's a shame - if only the chocolate cakes weren't so delicious.

Totally unfriendly staff, slow (and at the train station where you should be quick because people want to buy something quickly before they get on the train), prefer to look at their cell phone rather than serve me, roll their eyes when I ask for salad sauce - shouldn't you offer that yourself?? And she reluctantly gave me a fork!!! It was 7 p.m. and the store closes at 8 p.m., but I had the feeling I was disturbing the ladies by wanting to buy something... what's the point? If you don't like working in the service sector, you should leave it alone!! They didn't even say goodbye to me... incredibly unfriendly!!!

Small variety of breads.. how many types you offer? Maybe it was sold.. I took Mais bread, which was strange because of raisins inside..

Has everything you need to travel. I can recommend the pretzel.

Shopping at Sutter Begg in Basel train station. Relatively small shop, with very pleasant service. The store presents the goods very well. Really seductive.

The quality is okay. To ask so much for a crumb between your teeth is excessive. There are other variants in the building that are fairer.

The Sutter Begg at the SBB location is great 😁 The bread that I often buy there stays fresh for many days even after being cut and tastes great. Today I also tried their coffee, so cappuccino is really recommended! Their sweet pastries also taste great. For me, who never has much time, it's perfect because you can just walk in quickly and the service is always quick and friendly.

Premium prices but not premium quality. In terms of quality, more like Coop or Migros baked goods and not like Jetzer or Kübler for comparison. I tried Silserli with cheese and vanilla cross, rather disappointing for the price, lady at the counter is nice, location and atmosphere is good.

If I buy something, I buy it early in the morning. As a result, I have never had the experience of it being of bad quality. Prices are slightly higher than in normal supermarkets, but the reason is obvious. The only downside: most of the staff (at least the ones I personally had contact with) are rude and very slow. Often, even though there are several free employees, you are not served... Apparently it is more important to chat than to serve the customer.

I bought two Buttersilserli yesterday at around 4 p.m. Both were very dry. Very unfortunate, disappointing and also a bit cheeky. Why were these still being sold?

Silserli were rock hard, previously they were crispy and soft on the inside. Now like it's straight out of the freezer, I wanted to treat myself to something to take on the go since I haven't been to Basel for a long time. I'm very disappointed with the new quality. If I hadn't been on the train I would have brought it back. Very disappointing. Never again

The Epiphany cake is an imposition: a dusty desert. Did you bake it last week? My children, my wife and I are very disappointed in Sutter.

I was sold a Baslerleckerlitorte (not reduced) on the expiry date .5 days after the sale date. I'm also not in favor of throwing away unnecessary food, but then you can reduce it and draw attention to it.

Nice store, but prices too high compared to other providers. And the service... how can you put away a display case with peace of mind while customers would like to pay at the counter. Most customers have a train to catch. If you can't handle it, you shouldn't run a business on the SBB passerelle.

Since the move, the prices have been increased again (what was wrong with the 2.50 for a ham silserli, for example???), some of the staff are at risk of falling asleep and this leads to a long waiting time. I don't see any positive change since moving!!

Even if there are two salespeople present, you have to be lucky that both of them are serving... I then went to Cafe Spettacolo (30 m), where I received friendly service and a very good sandwich. Conclusion: I will also avoid the new Sutter Begg

I feel sorry for the staff as they rotate so much. 1 person at the coffee machine is clearly not enough at 7 in the morning. Despite everything, the staff was very friendly. Butter Silserli was tasty. Small round one for 2.50 CHF. Salt grains on top was quite generous. I find it slightly too salty but still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Quite busy as it's located in the train station, so you have to queue. Chocolate rolls were ok so far, although rather on the dry side.

I've been a regular customer at the Neubad branch for over 10 years but I've never experienced anything like this! Incompetent and rude staff. I was blamed for misunderstanding the order even though the saleswoman was very difficult to understand and didn't express herself correctly! And as if that wasn't enough, two saleswomen started gossiping about me in a different language while I was paying! I was polite the whole time despite the misunderstanding and was treated with total arrogance and condescension right from the start! I actually wanted to say something but then I decided to leave because I was about to reprimand these ridiculous women. This branch is an eyesore for the Sutter Begg and should be urgently closed or at least employ professional staff! I'm so angry that I decided to go have my coffee somewhere else. This rating applies to the branch at Sbb train station.

A bit hectic - that's just how it is at the train station. As usual with Sutter, the coffee and tea drinks are unfortunately quite expensive. Solid and stable quality of the baked goods. Fresh and hygienic items. Staff a bit inconsistent.

Location is very good, fair price but not recommend if you find good bread.

I was coming every Friday RELIGIOUSLY to buy a cake for work, until today while I was doing the line someone who came after me and decided to do a new imaginary line and since the seller attending at the shop knew this guy who was doing the imaginary line and proceed to greet and attend him first before the people who was making the line since apparently were friends or they knew each other. Also last time they charge me 15 chf for an 11 chf cake....... WATCH OUT!

It was part of my daily routine to stop by for a coffee here. It is very good, like the place a lot for its efficiency and quality. They keep raising the prices and for a daily visit it becomes a little expensive, I still try to come as much as possible 👍

For bread I recommend the Coop at the train station (Coop supermarket Südpark).

I've just been here for the first time! I ordered a tomato salad with mozzarella! But I got a green salad with 3 cherry tomatoes😟! It's a shame, the bread was very good and also the sauce but I wanted tomatoes!!!
