Cartell in Basel

I celebrated my birthday at Cartell and was thrilled. The service was great and the food was prepared quickly. The chips and all the starters were excellent. The quesadillas and tacos were very juicy and the meat had good flavor. I am always happy to recommend the restaurant and look forward to my next visit. Best Mexican in Basel.

This used to be my favorite restaurant. Unfortunately there is service that doesn't speak German and the burrito is smaller for the same price. Therefore points deducted. Otherwise everything is tip top.

The food is delicious. Depending on the day, it can be very crowded and you can hardly get in without a reservation, even if they try to find a solution. Depending on the day, the service staff can be a bit strange. Unfortunately my favorite drink (Horchata) was taken off the menu.

I only recommend starters, such as nachos or French fries.

Reserved table. Unfortunately it wasn't available yet when we arrived. We were offered a place at the bar to have an aperitif. Thanks. Unfortunately no one asked us what we would like to drink. Ok, suddenly the table was free. We were able to sit down and order an aperitif and something to nibble. The main course included a bottle of wine, which was on the menu without a price. Ok, we asked, purchase price is around 54.00 for you, we are selling it for 75:00. Ok, I said let's take it. And lo and behold the main course is already here! And the wine... Oh unfortunately we only have one open bottle left... would you like this? No thanks. We'll take another one. Conclusion: Service OK. Ambiance: Ok, noise level too high. Food: too overpriced, for which cans of pineapple end up on the tacos. The best thing about the 208.00 euros we paid for the two of us was the drink “El Chapo” and the apparently “Hecho a manos” tortillas.

Great place for Mexican in Basel. Highly recommend the fish tacos, a burrito (enchilada style), and of course their drinks. I live nearby and get food here more often than I care to admit 🫣. Everyone is super friendly and the vibe of the restaurant is chill.

The food was solid, almost very good by Swiss standards. I would have expected a side sauce for the beef tacos. However, you had to order these additionally for a lot of money. Otherwise there was nothing to complain about...

I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, that's why I wanted to stop by and because I really like Mexican cuisine. We were here on Saturday around 12 p.m., so it was very cozy and quiet, but in the evening there is already a lot going on and it is quite loud. The service was very friendly. I ordered 3 mixed tacos, they were very good, but I was a little disappointed because this is actually listed as a main course and not an appetizer. I didn't even get full, but I think it's expensive. My colleague ordered a salad bowl that was at least twice as big and she was full of it, hence only 4 stars.

I rarely give 5 stars when reviewing a place but Cartel is definitely worth it!! Incredibly delicious Mexicans tacos and margaritas. The guacamole sauce and the sweet potatoes were great and just thinking about the place is making me drool! Highly recommend this spot and I will revisit to try the rest of the menu. Very friendly and fast service. Make sure to book a table as the place was full!

Excellent Mexican restaurant. We didn't have a reservation and we were installed at the bar. Don't think it was a bad spot, they offered us a free shot. The food is pretty good and most important the portions are very, very generous. I also recommend cocktails made with love by the bartender.

We ordered three burritos through UBER. If you eat on site, you will also get chips (nachos). When it was delivered we got loveless burritos that were smaller than a dürüm! This for 26.5.- each! What a joke. In terms of taste, we had to season the burritos quite a bit. Would definitely not order from there again. Price/performance a complete flop.

We had an issue with our order through Uber eats! But the restaurant went the extra mile to correct the delivery mistake. Their food is always good. We really appreciated the customer service in this situation as well!

Ceviche: Amazing. Burrito: Fantastic. Tacos: Deliciosos. Agua de Horchata: Muy rica. Its the most authentic mexican food you can find around. Would recommend and definitely go there again!

Food was meh, prices ok, great facilities

Was it good? Yes. Gourmet, even. Sadly all I really want is a San Francisco Mission-style burrito made by an undocumented worker. And this is not it.

A traumatic experience! The food was ok but the service was terrible. My friends and I all ordered sweet potatoes, all of them except one colleague didn't get any sweet potatoes. We waited ten minutes because we thought they were still preparing it but it still didn't come. Afterwards we spoke to the employee and she just looked at us stupidly. After another five minutes the sweet potatoes arrived without an apology. Overall the food was tasty but it wasn't worth the price.

I love the fish tacos and the shrimp tacos! You can get yummy tacos and the best services here. Highly recommended!

The food was delicious and the service at the table for food/drinks was very good! We were told at the beginning that our table was reserved until 8:30 p.m. At 8pm we were told we had to pay and leave as the next guests had already arrived and the bill was placed on the table. We were not offered anything in the bar or another table (there were still several free) or outside because we would have liked to have something to drink - friendly service is deficient. different! After paying, the two ladies stood very provocatively at our table and rattled their nails on the table... very, very inappropriate and intrusive! A pity…

For our main course, we had the opportunity to sample a wide variety of tacos. I opted for the selection with beef, poultry, shrimp, and fish, while my partner preferred the chicken and beef tacos. Each taco was a masterpiece on its own – the fillings were perfectly balanced, and the tortillas were fresh and authentic. However, what truly made the experience memorable was not just the outstanding food, but also the impeccable service. The staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, and accommodating. They ensured that our evening went smoothly and that we felt genuinely welcomed. Overall, our evening at Cartell was a culinary journey that exceeded all expectations. Amazingly delicious Mexican (inspired) food. I would never think to come to Switzerland and have such yummy tacos. Tasty margaritas, fantastic guacamole...service was friendly and fast. Average price for the area. Two thumbs up and highly recommend.

It was my first time here and I was extremely satisfied with the overall package. The shrimp burrito is an absolute must-have! Price/performance ratio is pretty good, but for a burrito 26.- it costs a lot. Otherwise good and decent service, pleasant seats and relaxed atmosphere, even if it was busy. Would definitely come again!

It was a perfect experience to proof the food of Cartell. An amazing food full of taste, what you really expect from an Mexican food. The Summer Passion drink was wow. We were very glad with the service of Violetta. She was very attend, helpful with choosing the dishes. Our son had a great birthday evening. Thank you!

If you are missing a bit of Mexican delights this is definitely a place to try, I’ve been there for a short lunch and I enjoyed it. Multilayer car park at walking distance, just really 1 minute away. Some pictures shared here.

We went to Cartell with my wife based on the comments and we didn't eat much because we weren't very hungry, but I recommend the meat and shrimp tacos and the guacomole... Their taste and quantity were very good... We drank Mexica Beer since I don't drink tequila sometimes... The staff are very friendly and helpful. It was energetic... I only took off stars because the place was ordinary, it could have had a more attentive Mexican breeze... I definitely recommend it...👍👍👍

Nice restaurant, delicious food and good service, only the menu would be better if you had the option of using paper instead of just the Qr code.

The tacos were very good. The service could only speak English. We waited a long time just for the drinks and the bill. Asked for the bill several times and finally paid them after 10 minutes.

It was great! Looking forward to visiting again :) Service lost a star only because it was so full and therefore took some time before we could place our order. But then the food arrived rather fast.

Didn't convince me, small portions, overpriced, everything packaged in a modern way. The service speaks little or no German, which leads to confusion when ordering. In general, the service gives the impression of coming straight from the street, not really much experience. Was there twice and the food was once inedible and once ok but unfortunately always too expensive.

One of the best fish tacos I have tried in my life. Yesterday, my partner and I went to this amazing Mexican restaurant and I was amazing. We had their speciality chorizo tacos, fish tacos and cheese quesadilla. Also, the chocolate pudding. Everything was super delicious! Service was really nice, thanks Jenny and all the team in cartell restaurant, after 6 hours driving was all we needed! If you are in Basel and you love Mexican food, I really recommend this place.

The short version: if you don’t mind paying the right price for excellent food and love Mexican food, go go go! I have given up on Mexican restaurants abroad generally and in Basel in particular. We walked into this restaurant one week lunchtime because everything else around was too busy and had no idea from the outside that this was a Mexican restaurant. What a fantastic surprise. The food was just awesome and being Mexican I know what food Mexican food tastes like. I tried the ceviche at own risk and I had to stop myself from licking the plate to get the last drop of marinade. Making ceviche myself I can appreciate a good ceviche when I eat one. The fish was incredibly fresh tasting and the marinade to die for. The price and amount was in my opinion fair given the quality. My lunch buddy had some tacos and the fillings were delicious. I had a side of rice, wow that was delicate. Essentially these dishes are street food and you can’t get the taste of Mexican street food abroad and it is usually quite suboptimal. These classic dishes have been upgraded to gourmet taste and consequently you pay the price but it is totally worth it. Elsewhere you pay a bit less for Mexican food but it doesn’t taste good (see one of my reviews for comparison). My only suggestion: the rice is amazing but a slightly bigger portion for the price would be welcome. I have seen complaints about waiters not speaking German or being rude, we only had good experience.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican, this is the place to be. Awesome, attentive and very kind staff. Fully recommendable!

Great service, nice cocktails and tasty food! We had sweet potato fries, corn, tacos and burritos. The only dish to improve is the guacamole which is average but otherwise very good and nice atmosphere, will definitely come back.

Mexican cuisine has so much more to offer, the dishes themselves are okay, but very flatly seasoned, the staff is really nice and the process from ordering to payment is very efficient.

Everything is perfect, the food is top quality. The staff is very friendly and professional. The prices are expensive BUT this high quality must be rewarded.

When I tell you these are that best tacos my wife and I have ever had, please trust us. I’m from Mexico and my wife from central America and we’ve never had tacos this amazing. I had the carnitas, beef, and Al pastor and each one was full of flavor, I wanted to order 10 more.

Nice restaurant but unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. I ate beef tacos and was disappointed. The meat had a strong smell. Unfortunately for me and my colleague it's not worth a second visit. Except for one person, the rest of the staff couldn't speak any German; after all, we're still in Switzerland. The service staff very untrained.
