Hofwiesen in Zürich

We haven't been going there very often for a few years, but we always enjoy going there. The service is always friendly and competent, the food is great, the advice on the right wine is always a hit and the prices are reasonable for the high quality. I can't understand the complaining about the prices; Zurich is an expensive place and you can find out more about it beforehand. If you don't want to spend the money, there are cheaper alternatives.

Last Friday, four of us (+small child) were guests at the Rest.Hofwiesen. Despite advance notice that this was a birthday meal, no reference was made to it. We had our family meal at Hofwiesen and were in front of the restaurant a little before 6 p.m. and had to wait outside despite the cold because the restaurant doesn't open until 6 p.m. A service employee lit candles outside, obviously saw us, but ignored us and therefore didn't greet us. My cousin was given food he didn't order but settled for it so we could all eat together. Not even a drink or coffee was offered! The cheese spaetzle were not cheese spaetzle for me, but more spaetzle with a lot of cheese sauce, very heavy and not really digestible. We were almost intrusively asked for a drink refill, seemingly every 10 minutes. The music was very loud. Price/performance was not right for me! There are other points of criticism. We had booked 1830 on Friday. Table was reserved, service was excellent. The expectations are huge. It should be said in advance. I am a native of Austria, spoiled when it comes to schnitzel quality and extremely tolerant. But that evening the chef must have had a bad day at the Wiener Schnitzel. The breading was not crispy, but melted into an indefinable taste paste. The schnitzel itself didn't have the flavor we were hoping for (probably not salted enough, there was no hint of pepper at all). Only the potato salad with pumpkin seed oil was able to save the lunch from three stars. But I missed onions or shallots there too... Barely an hour after eating I needed the first Appenzeller to settle my stomach again. It may have been the oil that killed my appetite. Dear chef, wherever you may come from. Pay attention to which frying fat you use (in the original it would be lard), and that the "Viennese" also has to do with how much air remains between the breading and the meat. In the case of the referenced schnitzel, the distance to the meat was asymptotically close to zero (i.e. it would have been just enough quality for a schnitzel from the freezer, but not for more...).
