There are two shifts for dinner in winter, we reserved our table for the second shift at 8:30 p.m. The rest is divided into different rooms/parlors and the space for the tables is not that huge. It has a beautiful terrace with a view of the Matterhorn. My husband had the cordon bleu, I had the tuna fillet with sesame and avocado as a starter, and the main course had the gnocchi with green asparagus and hazelnut and we were very happy with our choice.

Tasty cordon bleu and friendly service lived up to my expectations. The restaurant was full of happy people.

I stayed for 2 nights. Small room but clean and tidy. I didn't use the restaurant services but when I arrived it was fully booked so it gives a good impression. To check in, you need to walk into the restaurant. The hotel is about 20 mins from the centre/train station but suited me perfectly. I love walk. LoL. No seated breakfast, but they leave croissants each morning. 😋 Bus stop outside the door.

Best meal im Zermatt. Excellent quality of ingredients and preparation. Location is just how I like it -- off the beaten path, tucked away and in a quaint spot. Service was excellent. If you are in Zermatt, this is a must visit restaurant.

The food was okay (especially the starters - tartare, colorful salad, soup). Unfortunately, there was a group of around 30 people sitting next to us in the same room and it was correspondingly loud when they arrived. The ambience was terrible and we could no longer enjoy the main course (we enjoyed dessert and coffee at another place). Unfortunately there was no information in advance and no other table was available. Very unfortunate.

We used to love this place — the schnitzel was out of this world and every year we went to Zermatt, this meal was our highlight. Unfortunately, this is now a thing of the past: the schnitzels of 2024 are okay — good, maybe, but definitely not great. Comparing to the schnitzels of the past, which were life-changing, the breading is thick and fatty, and meat slides out of it which isn’t very tasteful. Meat itself isn’t well seasoned, portions are much smaller. If you are looking for the best schnitzel, keep looking: unfortunately you won’t find it here anymore.

Super tasty restaurant with friendly service and cozy furnishings. The house hay schnapps is highly recommended. Definitely worth a visit.

We spontaneously stayed in Zermatt for a few days and were lucky to get a table for 4 people thanks to a canceled reservation shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday evening. The ambience is great, the hospitality is excellent and the food is top notch. There were good wines too. What more do you want? I don't know it. Thank you again!

As a restaurant guest, I unfortunately cannot rate the rooms, but I can rate the warm hospitality, the great service, the absolutely tasty and rich food and the very pleasant ambience! We would be happy to come back 🥰⛷️

For the very nice restaurant with a beautiful sunny view

Great place to stay . The people at the restaurant and hotel are super friendly and the location is perfect for skiing. In my opinion it is a great option to stay when you want to ski and go around the town and staying in a simple yet comfy place . Would stay again . Plus the food in the restaurant is super nice

We had the pleasure of staying here during our trip to Zermatt, and I can happily say we will be back. The rooms were clean, well put together, and simple in design. While the budget room can be a bit tight in space for 2, we found it to be a beautiful and warm place to return after a long day out, and the view of the Matterhorn from our window is unbeatable. We were also able to try the restaurant, and were blown away by the food. Absolutely one of the best restaurants and "hidden" gems in Zermatt, with generous portions and great flavor balance. The passionfruit panna cotta was to die for, highly recommended to finish off your meal. It is a bit of a trek from the main station, but the bus service is free and easy to use, and drops you right in front of the hotel.

Was told the best place in town to eat. The restaurant did not disappoint. The schnitzel was out of this world, so flavorful and huge pieces. The red curry shrimp soup was also amazingly good. The staff is incredibly friendly and very warm. The decor of the restaurant is warm and inviting and full of charm.

Unfortunately we had the feeling that we were not welcome as guests. The restaurant service is nice, other staff turn away as soon as you enter the aisle. Room service was OK. Even though there weren't many guests there, it was very loud in the evenings. But the location is really great 👍🏻

First time we visited Sonnmatten restaurant was in 2013, it was great then it's still great now. We were there for lunch. All dishes were delicious. We tried a burger, tartar and salad with avocado and shrimp. Service was friendly and welcoming. On top of that, the restaurant has great view of Matterhorn.

We only visited for the restaurant but it was excellent. Nice cozy indoor space and an even better outdoor space for warm nights. Excellent food. The highlight for me was the schnitzel. Good service and Swiss prices. Highly recommend.

Liked: The coffee machine and free coffee were appreciated. Didn’t Like: Dirty room with stains, no bike storage or tools, noisy location near garbage cans, and inadequate breakfast options.

Out of the tourist zone a warm, friendly family restaurant with superb food! Carefully prepared dishes with flair and passion served inside or outside on patio with Matterhorn view. Excellent wine selection. Good value for money. The sweet little neighborhood kids playing outside remind you Zermatt is not all tourists.

Unfortunately overhyped by Insta. The food is ok, but nothing more. The view is great if you get the right table.

Excellent restaurant in Zermatt. We chanced upon this place on our hike. The food was amazing, the best we‘ve had in recent times. We ordered mussels, avocado and shrimp salad, sea bass and seared tuna. All dishes were beyond our expectations. Not to forget, the view is spectacular!

Nice hotel, great terrace, the staff could sometimes be a little more attentive. The room was solid, there was no room service in the two days we were there, the furnishings in the room needed maintenance

The view of the Matterhorn from the sun terrace is absolutely spectacular. It certainly added to the wonderful ambiance of the place. As for the food, the asparagus, baby spinach and goat cheese salad was delicious and refreshing, a perfect choice for a light starter. Next, the veal cordon bleu was huge and simply succulent - the meat was cooked perfectly and the melted cheese was delicious. The icing on the cake to end the meal, a delicious crème brûlée! I had a lovely time and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal in a beautiful setting. ***** The sunny terrace with a view of the Matterhorn is perfect for a great atmosphere. For starters, I had a salad of asparagus, young spinach leaves, and goat cheese. For my main course, I had an enormous veal cordon bleu, and for dessert, a delicious crème brûlée. The experience was delightful, with tasty, well-presented dishes, attentive service, and a beautiful atmosphere. I highly recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal in a stunning setting.

Whenever we’re in Zermatt, we always need to come back here at least once. The views from the sun terrace are amazing - the perfect spot for an Après-skiing drink or dinner. The food is always excellent. The Schnitzel is delicious, but honestly you can’t go wrong with any of their options. It’s definitely not cheap, but you get great value for your money. Highly recommend!

Although we live in Zermatt most of the year, we have eaten here for the first time, but we had a coffee or a drink on the beautiful terrasse very often. Growing up in a country where a Wiener Schnitzel is a national dish I am very critical as far as a perfect Schnitzel is concerned but this one was 6 stars! We had two mixed salads and shared a portion of a Schnitzel which was really a huge one. Also the potatoes salad was perfect - lukewarm as it should be, with a very nice creamy sauce. Not mentioning the mixed salad that was just superb! The restaurant has a very tasteful interior design and I was surprised to read that some people were complaining about the service - ours was very friendly and efficient. As we are soon moving to a new house in Winkelmatten, this is going to be our favourite place!

Excellent service with excellent food.

What an amazing place with a great sunny terrace looking out to the Matterhorn, great food, and very good service. Had the schnitzel and salad bowl (apple & beef) and both were great, with very nice big portions. The goat cheese salad can still be improved. Highly recommend this spot for a nice lunch!

What an incredible treasure in Zermatt. The staff is friendly, helpful, and kind; they provide a beautiful atmosphere to dine and stay! The food is delectable, I had the Rindsfillet Rossini which turned out to be one of the best dishes I've ever had! I could not recommend the Sonnmatten enough.

Really good food and plenty. Excellent tartar, nice service. Good wine. Quite upscale 700CH for 6 persons, but we are in Zermatt. Even though out of the city, there is a bus stop right beside the restaurant. Keep an eye on the schedule

Christmas Dinner was outstanding. The staff is incredible. Prices are really good. This is a must visit restaurant if you are in Zermatt. Small issue with the scallops being undercooked, but they quickly and professionally rectified the situation. Amazing place. The schnitzel and Cordon Blue are some of the best I have ever had.

Wow! We were on a short interrail trip for our honeymoon in August with our 9 month old boy. We arrived at Sonnmatten and when we arrived we were told that we’d been given an upgrade…to the suite!! It was just incredible, everything perfect and luxurious with a balcony looking over the matterhorn (we witnessed an extra special sunrise thanks to our son waking early). It made our honeymoon extra special, thank you. It was without a doubt the nicest place we had ever stayed.

So expect a lot more from a Gault Milau restaurant! Cordon bleu was very tasty but looked like a brick alone in the plate... Spaetzle separately and another empty plate? I didn't see any of the fresh herbs from the garden on the plate either... Waiter has nothing to do in such a restaurant: bad salespeople, cheeky, cool man style with a hole in his pants... The best: ketchup and mayo with cordon bleu and homemade spaetzle! Conclusion: individual customers have no interest there... Better ask for a nice waitress... Waiter is there for nothing. A pity.

After the waiter ignored us for half a minute, even though he walked past us three times and there were only three other tables present, we left again. It's a shame that the "landlady" completely ignored us. Doesn't fit into the rest of Zermatt's hospitality.

My son and daughter in law had their wedding at the Sonnmatten in July. Barbara and her crew did and exceptional job in preparation for their big event and in the execution . It was a beautiful event from the ceremony on the patio , the wedding dinner and after the reception! Perfection!!!

We have often eaten at the Sonnmatten restaurant. Every time it is an experience to be pampered by the staff. The cuisine is excellent. Great Wiener Schnitzel or Gordon Bleu with potato salad and cranberries. An absolute dream. Enjoying the terrace in summer is a privilege. Very very nice. A must-visit place in Zermatt!

If you are looking for a cozy terrace with a garden in the village and a view of the Matterhorn, you have come to the right place. And the food is also amazing. I recommend the curry soup with the prawns and the cordon bleu. Yummy. Thank you Team Sonnmatten!

We celebrated our wedding in Sonnmatten. The service, the food, the team and everything Barbara and her team did far exceeded our expectations, in addition to the great location. Even if we don't get married, we'd love to come back. On this path again, thank you for being here!

Friendly service, nice garden, good beer

We stopped to quench our thirst. The lady serving was very friendly and helpful even though we don't speak German. The place is very pretty and the terrace is quite large and clean. The drinks were very fresh and the prices were fair. As I didn't sleep in this hotel, I'm not going to give it all the stars. The negative point is the large number of birds which sing and leave traces. The restaurant is very beautiful and very well decorated.

Rooms are good and modernly furnished. The hotel is a bit out of the way with a very nice view of the Matterhorn. Everything is within walking distance, but if you don't like it, the bus stop is right outside the door. Eating in-house is also highly recommended.

The quality of the food and the stylish ambience are what you would expect from a Gault Millau restaurant. The service, on the other hand, is at beer garden level. In response to my critical feedback, the waiter told us that he had “sold Ornellaia for €20,000” the evening before and that if we didn’t like it, we wouldn’t have to come back. Waren an einem schönen Maitag am wandern in Zermatt und freuten uns auf ein feines Dessert auf der schönen Terrasse. Uns wurde keine Speisekarte gereicht, was auch OK wegen Corona usw. Es wurde ein schokomousse mit frischen Erdbeeren (Logo in der Saison) und Aprikosenkuchen empfohlen. Die Erdbeeren und der Aprikosenkuchen haben mich sehr angesprochen worauf ich höflich fragte, ob es möglich wäre zum Aprikosenkuchen ein paar Erdbeeren zu bekommen. Mit Augenrollen und sehr belehrendem das kann ich aber nicht für den ganzen Tisch machen wurde dann der Wunsch bejaht. Etwas vor den Kopf gestossen wegen der unhöflichen Art aber happy, dass es doch bestätigt wurde warteten wir auf die Desserts. Da sehen wir die "Wirtin" wie sie wütend vor allen Leuten auf unseren Tisch zeigt und mit dem Küchenchef (offenbar der Mann) über uns redet. Mit einer noch selten gesehenen Arroganz erzählte uns der Küchenchef in einer riesen Lautstärke, dass er entscheidet was serviert wird und nicht der Gast. Und wenn er uns die Erdbeeren serviert, hätte er keine Erdbeeren mehr für seine guten Gäste und verwies auf einen nebentisch. Ich meinte nur, ich hätte selbstverständlich für die Beeren bezahlt aber wenn ihm das zu viel Aufwand sei soll er es doch sein lassen. Ohne ein Danke, Sorry oder eine halbwegs anständige Erklärung zog er sich in seine Küche zurück und seine Frau würdigte uns keines Blickes mehr.Ich verstehe wenn man vielleicht mal nicht genügend Erdbeeren eingekauft hat und gerade bei ungewissen Zeiten während Corona nicht unnötig die Lager füllt. Ein höfliches "Entschuldigung, heute haben wir gerade knapp eingekauft und können deshalb keine Erdbeeren" servieren hätte uns die Situation besser verstehen lassen. Aber zu zu sagen man solle die Erdbeeren doch selber im Coop holen gehen ist für mich nicht kundenorientiert. Das Besitzerpaar hat uns vor allen Gästen blossgestellt. Wir wollten nur noch weg. Ich dachte nach der langen Schliessung der Restaurants hätten die Besitzer sich über Gäste gefreut aber das war überhaupt nicht zu spüren... Ich werde dieses Restaurant nie wieder aufsuchen und es auch niemandem mehr weiterempfehlen. Aussicht und Essensqualität ist für mich 2. Rangig. Die beiden chefs haben uns den schönen Frühlingstag verdorben.Waren anschliessend im Coop und haben dort wie "empfohlen" feine Walliser Erdbeeren gekauft.Tipp: Wer in Winkelmatten ist ist im Waldhaus oder Winkel Kunterbunt viel besser umsorgt

Super schöne Terrasse mit Blick aufs Matterhorn, leckeres Essen, das Dessert mit dem weissen Toblaronemousse und den Erdbeeren, ein Traum, zu dem gibt es feine verschiedene selbstgemachte Limonaden. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich!

Leider durften wir in diesem Jahr nur vom Take Away profitieren. Das Wienerschnitzel mit Pommes war Spitze, grosse Portionen, auch zu Hause noch heiss. Take Away ist sehr zu empfehlen - pünktlich und sehr lecker.

Natürlich wussten wir vom Lockdown in der Schweiz und waren umso erfreuter als wir auf der Homepage des Restaurants für zwei Abende während unseres wöchigen Aufenthalts in einer Ferienwohnung in Zermatt einen Tisch für vier reservieren konnten. Unsere Skepsis verflog endgültig als wir gleich nach der Reservation eine schriftliche Bestätigung unseres Termins erhielten und ca. 24 Stunden vorher diesen nochmals online bestätigen mussten. Froh, uns nicht jeden Tag mit Take-Away Menus verpflegen zu müssen, standen wir pünktlich zum reservierten Termin vor der Türe des Restaurants. Nach mehrmaligem Klopfen und Klingeln an der verschlossenen Tür, riefen wir die Besitzer an. Anstatt sich zu fragen, wie wir eine bestätigte Reservation erhalten konnten, wurden wir kaltschnäuzig und äusserst arrogant abgewimmelt. Es war bestimmt nicht unser Fehler und führte uns vor Augen, dass diesen Wirtsleute Ihre Gäste egal sind. Sie haben offenbar normalen Anstand nicht nötig.

Ausgezeichnete Küche, super freundliches Personal und der beste Früchte-Streuselkuchen!

Amazing dinner! Any dish is to die for.

Das Essen ist ohne Frage, sehr gut und auch das Ambiente sehr ansprechend un man fühlt sich schon beim Eintritt deutlich wohl. Der Service ist gut, dürfte aber effizienter sein und der Auftritt vom Küchenchef war aus meiner persönlichen Sicht auch eher arrogant als Gastfreundlicher Natur (ein Plakat mit einem Starkoch, erzeugt zwangsläufig noch keinen Starküche;-).)Dennoch würde ich das Restaurant jederzeit und auch gerne empfehlen.

Abstand der Tische in viel zu engen Räumen, gesamtes Personal dann noch ohne Maske , unverständlich in diesen Zeiten!!!! Personal Service aufgesetzt freundlich. War lange einer unserer Favoriten in Zermatt. Dieses Mal über alle Massen enttäuscht!!! Das dies auch anders geht haben wir in anderen Lokalitäten erlebt. Sehr, sehr schade. Das war wohl leider für lange Zeit unser letzter Besuchwir waren jedes Jahr mehrmals zu Gast. Aber sowas geht gar nicht! Essen war sehr fein!

Food was OK but not really superb as the reviews and Gault Millau stars suggest. Their homemade "Spätzli" did not have any salt - their french fries had some fries that were 100% black and do not belong in food presented to clients. Their cordon bleu is very good - but not exceptional. Overall, it is hard to say that the expensive price tag can be justified overall for the experience. Dont get me wrong - the food was still good and certain parts definitely very good. But it does not meet the hype and the prices are salty.

Das Hotel/Restaurant liegt ideal in der Höhe im Ortsteil Winkelmatten mit grandioser Aussicht aufs Matterhorn (von der grossen Terrasse). Die Räumlichkeiten des Restaurants sind eher schlicht, ohne speziellen Stil eingerichtet. Ausgewählt haben wir das Restaurant, weil es dort Wienerschnitzel gibt, die anscheinend zu den drei besten der ganzen Schweiz gehören. Eine Person hat sich dafür entschieden, hat aber gemeint, schon bessere Wienerschnitzel gegessen zu haben. Sie waren zwar gross, aber ziemlich fade. Der dazu gereichte Kartoffelsalat (recht kleine Portion) war dagegen echt österreichisch gut. Die andere Person bestellte Kartoffel-Karotten-Bällchen. Sie erhielt schwarze, verbrannte Kugeln. Also insgesamt haben wir wesentlich mehr erwartet als geboten wurde. Der Service war allerdings nett.

Ein wunderschönes Speiserestaurants mit super Wienerschnitzel und Salate die man nirgends bekommt einfsch nur super ❤️

Ein traumhafter Ort zum verweilen.

Bel endroit, Irish coffee pas authentique ! Mon épouse a pris après une belle ballade un Spritz sur la terrasse, et moi un Irish coffee. Hélas, très peu de goût de Whisky, plutôt une goutte de Whisky, façon Café mit. Pas pas dans les verres ronds traditionnels à cette boisson... Déception, d’autant plus que la serveuse contestait mon affirmation.

Toller Aussicht mit deinem Essen

Im schön gelegenen Zermatter Weiler Winkelmatten, nahe bei der kleinen Kapelle ist das Restaurant Sonnmatten. Ein Trumpf ist nebst der guten Küche auch das tolle Gartenrestaurant. Da sitzt man bei schönem Wetter gerne draussen und lässt sich vom freundlichen Personal bedienen. Auf der Speisekarte finden sich sogar vegane Gerichte. Das alles gefällt natürlich vielen, so dass sich mindestens während der Saison eine vorzeitige Tischreservation lohnt. Kinder? Sind willkommen, es gibt Kindermenues! Da es ja die meisten dieser jungen Gäste kaum je über das mit Heisshunger rasch gegessene Menue hinaus ruhig am Tisch aushält, ist man froh um den nahe gelegenen Spielplatz!

Sehr gut mit kleinen Kindern. Spielplatz direkt vor dem Haus tolle Terrasse. Sehr gute weinkarte mit fairen preisen. Liebhaber von schönen Cordon bleu kommen hier auf ihre Rechnung.

Essen ok. Service nicht den Preisen entsprechend. Mini Kinderteller und wenn man für die Kinder einen Nachschlag erbittet wird dieser noch einmal voll verrechnet.

Une bonne adresse, certes pas bon marché mais satisfaisante en tout points.L'accueil était efficace, le lieu bien présenté et propre, le service extrêmement rapide et la cuisine très bien.Hormis beaucoup de monde à l'intérieur a mon goût, dû au 1er août et à la pluie menaçante en terrasse, en période de covid, les prescriptions de distanciation n'étaient pas forcément au mieux.Cependant, malgré cela, nous avons passé un bon moment et ce n'est pas en relation directe avec le sérieux de l'établissement, qui est fort respectable.Je recommanderais vivement. Et si possible, même en terrasse avec vue sur le Cervin!

Nice drinks, delicious deserts! Given the high number of staff I had expected better service. The serving personnel did not seem to be able to take enough time. They were rushing it. Veal Cordon blue was very good size, but chf 49 without any vegies is overpriced, but I guess chf 49 might include the zermatt premium

Restaurant avec une superbe terrasse idéalement situé pour une vue imprenable sur le Cervin. Accueil agréable et service rapide.Options végétariennes et véganes bien indiquées. Tout était succulent. Les tagliatelles aux champignons et mozzarella fumée étaient un vrai délice. Plats de viande également très goûteux. J’y retournerai avec grand plaisir pour la cuisine et la vue.

Bedienung Unfreundlich, genervt und chaotisch. War genervt uns eine Getränkekarte zu bringen. Die Gäste neben uns wurden ebenfalls genervt bedient. Sehr schade, bis jetzt eigentlich waren wir immer sehr zufrieden hier...
