Steinhalle in Bern

Our most favourite restaurant in Bern. We've been regulars here since years and can't find a single thing to complain about it.

What should a lunch break be like? Cozy and inviting atmosphere, delicious and soothing food and good company. The Steinhalle restaurant fulfills the first two points with flying colors, and I'm happy to take care of the third point myself. With that in mind: see you next time.

We were there for coffee + small lunch. The waitress offered us to try their homemade kimchi. We had sweet desserts which didn’t really fit with the kimchi and said we’re not interested. After her insisting we try it, we got a tiny portion which they tried to charge us for in the end (and I didn’t agree to pay). scrolling through some of the comments here make me realize they do it regularly there, so I’ll skip the next visit. Beware of the kimchi scam!

Always a top culinary experience. The Hokkaido ramen is excellent. Even the market salad that you can order with it is heavenly. The service is also excellent and the employees are extremely friendly.

After dining here recently, I feel compelled to address the very uncomfortable, incessant attempts at “upselling” that we experienced. It started with the drinks order. Immediately we were asked if we wanted a bottle of Rosé, which we politely declined. Starters? No thank you. Then, with our meal order, would we like Kimchi?, would we like the side salad ? (all as paid extras). When it came to my turn to order, I specified without salad, just to save being asked again (as all my friends had been asked and it was getting awkward), and then my partner did the same. However, a small salad arrived before the main meals. I thought this was strange and double checked with the waitress, who just said that the salad comes out first. I presumed this was all fine as I had been clear I didn’t want the ‘market salad’ which was an add-on to the main meal. Not wanting to cause more of a fuss, we just ate the salad. Then, when we got the bill, the salads were indeed charged on there. Despite us having said explicitly we didn’t want them. This leads us to one of two conclusions: 1. There was a misunderstanding caused by the constant and uncomfortable attempts to suggest “extras” to the meal, where us saying we didn’t want salad was interpreted that we did. 2. The salads were deliberately included in an effort to upsell us something after we declined everything else. Either way, the pushiness just has to stop. It made us feel on edge throughout and we certainly left with a bitter taste in our mouth after seeing the bill. Do the serving staff work on commission? It sure felt that way. As regards the food, it was pleasant if a slightly small list of options for lunch. We tried the ramen and the burger.

Great burger 🍔... and be sure to put the kimchi in the burger... it was delicious. The salad of the day was also very tasty. Service top and courteous.

Very good cuisine, innovative and high quality

Food was pretty good. We had lunch here after a few hours at the Einstein Museum.

Eating in the Steinhalle feels a bit like “a river emerges from the middle”. Maybe that might seem a bit far-fetched at first glance. But let's just try it out. The dynamics of the film about the two dissimilar brothers Norman and Paul, the escalation into difficulties that are increasingly difficult to resolve and the ultimately tragic end of Paul, who is beaten to death, always find a point of rest, a moment of silence and thus a real center , namely in the middle of the river. This is important because the middle of a river is constantly changing and constantly reforming, because a river never stands still. Or as Balts Nill says in “Vo gewe DO…”: Good things like water benefits everything that lives There is no slope flowing or there where never better so glychets how nice sweet em weigh. It is exactly this concentrated power and energy - from the center, from the calm and clarity, that comes to mind when you are lucky enough to sit at the front in the stone hall and watch the excellent crew. The most wonderful creations are put together calmly and with great concentration, they are finely decorated instead of roughly made, and as a guest I am surprised again and again with each creation by what Markus Arnold and his team conjure up on the plate. Fascinating, always very successful, finely balanced between the different ingredients, brought to the point and simply surprising and always very delicious, I feel like I am on a constant journey of flavor condensation and constant learning. A bit like fly fishing: BE and enjoy. Thanks.

I had dinner years ago and it was really great. Lunch is also good in terms of quality and quantity, but you definitely don't have to see the brunch and especially the croissants.

What unfriendly staff. Went to the Historical Museum yesterday and wanted to have a drink in the restaurant. At first I wanted to use the toilet, but unfortunately I was refused entry... and that with 8 guests. Luckily, we received a warm welcome in the Kirchenfeld restaurant, 80m from the museum. Despite a full house.

An evening at the Steinhalle We stopped by on a Friday evening or a promise from the website and the menu which announced to us, Inspiration: “The taste of Porto”. We were looking forward to tasting the cuisine of northern Portugal in the chef's gastronomic way. Our evening was a total disappointment, neither the products nor the tastes nor the smells were Portuguese inspired! We were served five samples of dishes which had nothing to do with the promise of the menu, a 3cm slice of a freshwater fish and 2 cubes of Angus of the same size, that's the consistency in terms of material of these 5 (dishes) all the rest was just juice, sauce, cream or emulsion. The “kitchen” being open, I observed for a long time the plate assemblers who were there. The young woman who was reheating the preparations, repeatedly used her finger to wipe the edge of the pan before bringing it to her mouth, which finger she then used to place the items on the plates. The dressing was done on the fingers of several employees who came and went from the tables, touching everyone without ever washing their hands. After spending 3 hours tasting tasting portions, we still found where the chef's inspiration came from, it was purely financial since we were relieved of more than 500.-

Probably, just the best place in the country.

Food was good, but falls more into the category of very decent quality craftsmanship than cooking. Price too high for what is offered. The boss's unambitious brief appearance with the statement that explanations would come from the staff was unnecessary.

We felt extremely comfortable here at Restaurant Steinhalle. The team is exceptionally friendly and competent, and the food was simply outstanding from start to finish. Every single course was a pleasure that thrilled us. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Compliment. We'll definitely be back!

We loved our experience at Steinhalle. We didn't find the service to be pushy at all. The food was superb and they were very accommodating.

Simply brilliant food and very friendly staff. It's been a long time since I've had such great service. Gladly again. The only tiny point of criticism from my side is that there are no side walls at the chef's table and you sit right next to strangers, which personally bothered me a bit.

Everything has a price, that’s a fact. The place, the menu, the discovery, all enhanced by exceptional service, everything was perfect! The service is worthy of the asking price.

Good part original food and fresh service.

It was okay. Don't expect to be fed with a menu, you will leave the restaurant with an empty stomach. I found it great, that we could see the chefs prepare delicious foods live, I appreciated the quality of the food and every explanation. I found it miserable that the staff was trying to push you order expensive drinks, especially compelling you order a 50 chf schnaps by pouring it in your glasses at the end of a dinner. I understand fine dining is expensive and requires proper ingredients but I don't think it's necessary to push customers to extend their Menus because they will never come back.

It wasn't the first time we ate in the Steinhalle, always excellent. After a recent trip to Japan, we were excited about the Japanese food in the Steinhalle. It couldn't have been better! We are already looking forward to the next topic and are sure it will be just as excellent as all the dishes before.

Very nice experience in Bern, in a very pleasant open-air setting! The dishes were good, the waiters pleasant and their water sparkling 👌 When we announce a 30 minute wait to get a table, it’s generally a good sign 😊 And thanks to the waitress for the answers to my questions about the city!

The music in the stone hall wasn't quite to our liking. But it will remain the only tactless thing of the evening. In everything else, Markus and his team hit every note. It truly seems like a well-rehearsed orchestra. The service or kitchen staff take turns coming to the tables, providing concise and stylish information about the next piece and then leaving space to enjoy again. The introduction is fitting with a small medley, the titles are Spinach Gomaae, Tuna Tataki and Snow Crab with Cucumber. For vegetarian connoisseurs, serve with melon instead of tuna or with celery instead of crab. This is followed by a constantly outstanding melody with sea bass, Arctic prawns, scampi and finally, as a grand finale, Swiss Black Angus with fermented Japanese shallot or grilled Japanese maitake and shiitake mushroom. Every note is perfect and the team harmonizes lightly and attentively. From the outside, Markus doesn't seem like a strict conductor, but rather plays in the middle of his team. Each team member is the first violin in their act. The change of direction from the chefs to the audience at the tables makes the event even more pleasant. The rhythm remains pleasant throughout the evening, the breaks in between are just right. You rarely look at the kitchen, not out of impatience, but because you're looking forward to the next composition. Japanese Summer Breeze, the title on the menu, fits this day perfectly. The temperatures are still high, but at the latest with the encores, a refreshing Kalamansi explosion and the following wild berry sorbet with roasted rice, you cool down in time and completely sink into the pleasant ambience. The many plants and the subtle lights match the slowly darkening evening. Like an otherwise annoying earworm, after walking into the stone hall you hope that a taste of Japanese cuisine will come back to you here and there on the way home.

Despite the summer heat, it is extremely pleasant under the trees even at midday. 32 francs for a burger and salad is certainly not a small amount, but since it was excellent it was worth the money. The wine list also offers very nice wines. The service is very friendly and attentive.

Subpar service in the middle of Bern, coffee was good however the overall experience has been ruined by the lack of service, no attention from waiters what so ever, until service is not improved we will skip this place.

Wonderful atmosphere. Attention of 10. Perfect for friends, family and/or couple. We loved it. In the summer season there is the possibility of dining outside and it is wonderful. We enjoyed the „Japanese Summer Breeze“ menu along with the choice of drink accompaniments and it was a wonderful experience. We will continue repeating. In addition to the fact that the “Easy Lunch” is also a very good option at meal time.

we have been there now twice once for the evergreen menu and once for the nyc chef choice. both menus were really delicious. the variance of the plates is great and takes you on a journey trough different types of dishes. in both menus we had a dish were we could create parts of the dish by hand. this was a really refreshing experience in a restaurant of that style. the concept of the open kitchen gives a great inside to the cooking. we also had both times the wine accompaniment and never regretted it. there were some very surprising wines but they always fit very well to the dishes.

I had already eaten in the Steinhalle in the evening, which was world class, and now I finally had an easy lunch outside on this cozy, pleasantly cool terrace. The ramen was delicious (with Hinwiler herb pork or vegetarian with spinach). Next time we'll have the burger 😜 And I can highly recommend the homemade ice tea as well as the affagato for dessert!

A wonderful place where you can have everything from a very practical and easy meal to a romantic and wonderful dinner in my case. We have been in both environments and we have felt wonderfully great. The attention is dedicated. The food is 10 and always makes you want to return.

Extraordinarily fine food and very attentive and humorous service. The high price is justified.

I have now had the pleasure of dining at Steinhalle three times and cannot wait to return for a fourth! We love the interpretation on the ever changing theme. The food is nothing short of exceptional. Highly recommended.

Good food, original non-alcoholic drinks accompaniment

I don't know that's normal in the city, but for the prices I expect that you'll be served and don't have to hand in your order at the bar. Especially when there is little going on. I also find the food menu very poor. Certainly not for a family with children. There are only salads, bowls and a burger. Just a portion of fries would be enough. We then just decided to drink.

Lunch break from the neighboring museum on the summer garden terrace. Perfect “easy lunch” with Swiss Black Angus beef tartare with light rouille and crusty bread. As a dessert, affogato with ice cream made from Bernese milk. Friendly, quick service! Gladly again!

Don't be fooled by the announced open hours - no food will be served to you before 11:30AM, even not a basic affogato dessert consisting of an espresso shot and ice-cream from their fridge. The only thing available before 11:30AM - basic drinks on the menu, which is neither extensive not inspiring in this part. The coffee, though, is good. The milk used for the cappuccino tasted like UHT(Ultra-High temeperature) one. A disappointment, unfortunately :(

Nice outside, but the acoustics in the hall are not optimal for conversations. It was cold outside. As a result, we were not really welcome as new guests in the hall without a reservation and were barely tolerated. The upper area was completely closed. Negotiations about where you can even sit. After a while, please change tables again for dinner. Coffee and a small piece of Gugelhopf cost a fortune. Recommendation: ask for prices before ordering. The basic problem is the limited space inside, where there are only two options: a restaurant with strict reservations or a convivial bar. Here the first option was chosen. Both are not possible together, or only in summer when the weather is nice when spontaneous guests can sit outside.

Absolutely top gastronomy, very tasty and good service. Still, I thought the price was exorbitant. So I won't be a guest in this restaurant again because it is simply too expensive.

Not just a culinary experience - the Modern Chinese Diner in the Steinhalle was an experience in many aspects. First of all, the modern restaurant in the stone hall itself is impressive. The two of us sat at a corner of the counter that surrounds the cooking theater and had a complete insight into how Markus Arnold and his young team work. The kitchen where everything is prepared for the evening's production is in the basement. The service team, which was also young, ensured a relaxed atmosphere throughout. The interpretation of well-known dishes with Asian influences in the Chinese menu was very successful and the accompanying wine selection absolutely matched the individual courses and there were some excellent discoveries. Markus Arnold also accommodated us very friendly and easily with personal adjustments to the menu. We had a relaxed, enjoyable culinary evening with a very stimulating production by the kitchen team and friendly and pleasant hosts. For a culinary experience - The Modern Chinese Diner in the Steinhalle has an experience and more, too. Tout d'abord, the modern restaurant in the stone hall impressionne en soi. Assis à deux à un coin du comptoir qui entoure le theater culinaire, nous avons eu a perçu total de la méthode de travail de Markus Arnold et de sa young équipe. The cuisine, in the source, is prepared for the mise in the evening scene, found in sous-sol. The team of service, also for young people, ensures an ambiance that lasts long after the evening. The interpretation of plats in a connus with Asian influences in the Chinese menu is très réussie and the selection of wines that are absolutely adapted to different plats and also have excellent discoveries. Markus Arnold nous a également proposé des adaptations personnelles du menu with beautiful coup de gentillesse and without problems. Nous avons passé a soirée culinary détendue and savoreuse with a mise en scène très stimulante de l'équipe de cuisine et des hôtes aimables et agréables.

Food in the evening was extremely good. The menu changes completely about every two months, which is why you can go on a culinary trip around the world. The beurre blanc is a dream every time. Service is very attentive.

I just went for tea time, to have a coffee ☕️ and a dessert 🥧. The coffee was ok, the cake was so so, not bad but not specially delicious. The service was not nice, I felt like they were telling me to go. I was sitting inside, and the place is small, there are few tables. They asked me to go 20 minutes before the closing time. So, it was not the best option for having a relaxing time drinking a coffee.

Delicious evening dining and relaxed lunches

Reception and service in the afternoon seemed unwelcoming. We, a family with two teenagers and grandparents, weren't sure whether we would be welcome. The poster outside promised that beautiful people would be warmly welcomed. I didn't feel like going back there for a meal.

Great concept with a thematic menu that changes every few months. Can be booked as either a 4 or 6 course menu. If you book online and pay straight away, you get a 10% discount. We had Tapas y Mas with a Spanish flair. In addition to the 6 courses there was also an amuse bouche. When I asked, I was also given a fine non-alcoholic aperitif. Very attentive and well informed service. We had to leave a little earlier and the service and kitchens rushed a little more especially for us, which was very accommodating. All in all, a great evening with delicious food and a pleasant atmosphere.

Hambúrguer was nice. The meat 7.0 points out of 10. Japanese beer was really worth trying

The burger is amazing and the peanut sauce (I think) that comes with it is glorious. I've had many burgers and this is amongst the best.

Favorite restaurant in Bern. Fantastic dinner, super friendly hosts, etc. But the lunch menus are not on the same level in my opinion.

I was very happy with everything. The staff was very prompt and courteous. I ordered an easy bowl with avocado. This has proven to be a good choice. The food was high quality. The portion was ok too. It was also comfortable to eat at the bar. I would like to visit again in the future.

Creative cuisine, friendly but not super attentive staff: we were brought twice smth wrong. Wonderful and afforfable lunch.

Casual dining experience with very high quality food. Four out of six courses were excellent and offered something new for me (best I had in Bern). The Tapas course and the cheese plate were high quality but not as innovative (exception: the excellent citrus-flavored cucumber). In such a high-class restaurant I expect everything to offer a unique twist for a five star food rating.

Fantastic food, Markus and his team create the finest culinary delights, great ambience, in summer a pleasant garden terrace under trees that are over 100 years old. Try Asian ramen, phenomenal. We will be back

Excellent cuisine and good service. I ate there for lunch and everything was delicious. Small menu at lunchtime and in the evening gourmet menu that I haven't tried but which looks incredible.

We spent a very cozy New Year's Eve in the trendy stone hall. The New Year's Eve menu was excellent; the wine pairing was excellent and the service was top and very personable!

The Lisbon Twist Menu more than lived up to expectations. It's nice and easy to have some good food over lunch. I always enjoy going to this location.

We made reservations for Sunday brunch. The brunch was good as expected, but unfortunately you don't have any options when it comes to the brunch tray. I don't like half-raw eggs or yogurt with granola. But the quality of the goods is good and attractively presented. The only shame was that we were seated at the bar, even though there were free tables in the restaurant the entire time we were there. That was rather unpleasant and uncomfortable. Behind us was a small passage where all the guests and also the waiters had to go through constantly. Hence the deductions.

We took Japanese umami tasting menu. All great: service, pairings, the place itself.

We came for lunch as a party of 4 with a baby in a pram. Nice decor, very nice terrace for the summer and service is attentive. However, the place clearly does not want to be kid friendly, which I might understand for dinner but at lunch... I indicated that we would come with a pram, I got an email back saying that outside there is lots of space for prams but not inside and that it would be tight... On the day of the weather was clearly not good enough to sit outside, we were greeted with the words that we should have told them in advance about the pram... which we had of course. Why the fuss is unclear because there is LOTS of space between tables and around them. Bit of a shame this nitty gritty discussion. In any case the food was good - particularly the Ramen and Burger, the poke bowl is rather average, and a nice drinks selection also in terms of non-alcoholic beverages. The cheese cake as dessert was also very good even though tiny. In terms of pricing it is on the higher side.

When we were in the Steinhalle in the summer, we already knew that we really wanted to try the Umami Japanese Twist. At last it was time. We had the 6-course menu with wine/drinks accompaniment. It was great. The amuse-bouche, a bluefin tuna from Spain with Hatcho Miso Beurre Blanc, was excellent. The combination of the tuna with the beurre blanc and the caviar from the field was excellent. Although all the following courses were equally excellent, the third course is particularly worth mentioning: charcoal-grilled chicken thigh from Seeland. Here too, everything was particularly harmonious. The charcoal-grilled piece of chicken harmonized perfectly with the briefly fermented white cabbage and strawberry vinegar. An ingenious combination of a hint of smoke and a campfire feeling due to the grilled chicken thigh, as well as the slightly sour sweetness of the strawberry vinegar, the sweet taste of the white cabbage and the slight spiciness of the black garlic. The refreshment served after the main course, the Kalamansi Explosion, was also a surprise to the palate. Finally, the coconut kakigori “shaved ice” as a dessert was also a surprise, as was the yuzu surprise, which, according to the waiter, when you open it you should think of your mother-in-law: lift the spoon and hit it. The wine/drink accompaniment was also good, although we think it was more harmonious with the “Veggie with PLUS” menu in the summer. We particularly liked the sparkling sake with yuzu for the first course and the Japanese apricot wine for the last dessert. Especially with the second course, you noticed that the drinks were matched to the food, which is why it was exciting to enjoy the menu with the wine/drink accompaniment. At the beginning we found the white wine “The Cure”, which was served with the Seeländer organic tomatoes with white miso, special and uninteresting, flat in the finish and even a bit disappointing. But in combination with the miso, everything worked again. The wine had a little more character and harmonized perfectly with the dish. Conclusion: Once again we were able to spend a great evening in the Steinhalle. The perfectly cooked food to a high standard, together with the matching drinks and the elegant but relaxed atmosphere, made this evening an experience. There is a common thread, a philosophy and passion in the menus that you cannot see in every high-class restaurant. Because “just” cooking perfectly and preparing it beautifully and with great detail is not quite enough. In our opinion, a philosophy should be evident in this price range. And that is the case in the stone hall.

The food was nice but unfortunately the service was really bad. The waiter was creepy. At the end of the dinner we were just sitting there waiting for ages to get our food because the staff was soo busy closing the kitchen that only one person worked in the kitchen. I understand the stuff wanna go home as early as possible but it’s not professional. Clean after the guests finished and left not during their stay. The whole dinner took more time than it supposed to. Also quite expensive..

Food was good but not outstanding (even compared to other 1 Michelin star restaurants). Price very high (it should be 4 dollar signs and not 3 on Google). What was worst: you left the restaurant hungry, despite ordering more bread four times.

Always a top spot! Consider booking a table in advance if you want to secure your lunch spot! Food is very good healthy. Price is ok. Terrasse is top and service is very friendly and efficient. Can only recommend!

They charge 5 francs for still water in a carafe. There's no proof that it's not from the tap... and they refuse to serve tap water, even if you take another drink. Food was good. But the water thing is juste wrong.

A lovely outside terrace for a very warm summer lunch, the "easy" menu was small but nicely balanced and afforded something for everyone. Service was prompt and extremely courteous allowing us an unhurried hour to complete our meal.

Casual dining with Arnold's on July 28, 2022. What is celebrated here is great. Every course is a new taste experience, presented at the table by the chefs down to the smallest detail. The service leaves nothing to be desired and dining casually in the garden becomes an “unforgettable experience”. This is top-class gastronomy.

Cozy spot under old trees, easily accessible by public transport - but hardly justifies the price of Fr. 9.50 for a small bottle of Japanese beer, which you also have to order yourself at the bar and pay for in advance... Unfortunately, no draft beer available.

Beautifully located under shady trees, large terrace. For higher demands. Japanese bottled beer (3.3 dl, Fr.9.50) is too expensive and has to be ordered at the bar and paid for straight away; is then brought to the table. Easily accessible by public transport.

Highly recommended for its ramen, among the best in the city. No bad choice possible on the lunch menu, which we only regret remains unchanged year after year. The gnocchi, tartare, tomato soup and the easy bowl are also safe bets. The burger, while popular, is simplistic, too light on cheese and impossible to get rare or truly pink except by negotiating with the staff. The magnificent terrace makes the Steinhalle an unmissable establishment.

Highly Recommended. The food, the service, everything was perfect. We were there during the Japan theme. Perfect wine pairing, with every course someone came and told us something about the dish and the ingredients. We'd love to come back.

This is one of my favourite places in Bern. I have been here a couple of times, for brunch, lunch and dinner and was happy every time. The last occassion I visited the restaurant was for brunch on a sunday. We loved sitting in the shade of the trees, the food was well selected and fine. Service great, everyone friendly as usual. I recommend everyone to enjoy this place one and then I am sure you will come back :)
