Takano in Zürich

Sweet little restaurant run by an old Japanese couple. The owners and support staff are extremely nice and the service is efficient and uncomplicated. The food is authentically Japanese and tastes incredibly good. My favorites are: Takoyaki - starter - very aromatic and with the fun bonito flakes like in Japan. Gyoza - appetizer - great all-rounder starter when you're not sure what you like. Always a good option. Katsu don - Main course - Served with a small soup it is a great option, the meat is very tender and creamy. Oyako don - main course - my absolute favorite! Chicken, egg, rice and lots of vegetables and spices. Just great. Gyu don - main course - Also very great, for me just behind the Oyako don. But you have to like ginger.

If you've been to Japan and want to experience a Restaurant in Zürich that approximates the experience, this is the place.

Visited three times so far. Friendly service and food is not bad but not impressive. Prob will not visit again… Tried Sushi. Good quality fish and friendly staff. Everything was good except for the rice. It was too squashed together (much better rice than other places in Zürich though). I want to come back to try other dishes. Very happy to have an authentic Japanese restaurant in Zürich. Felt like back in Japan.

Passing by this restaurant and looking at the menu on the street poster, it’s not bad so gave it a try. Ordered Tonkatsu, as you can see from the picture, when it was presented, it looks decent. But when tasting, it was not good at all. First bite, I can taste that the oil will need immediate replacement. It tasted like it’s been used to fried food for at least 3 days!!!! And on second bite… the texture feels strange! And when I look at it closely! OMG… it’s mince pork! It’s not a whole pork chop! I have NEVER ever had Tonkastu cooked in such a way! I mean, the restaurant is fairly central, so the cost must be high, but come on… minced pork… and it’s going downhill from here. Many pieces tasted soggy inside. Ie, the batter were too thick and NOT cooked through… so I am eating soft dough batter… the miso soup tofu texture also a bit strange… it’s not firm silky tofu… it’s like they didn’t control the mixture properly and created a creamy tofu… the tea was OK and bill comes to 32 CHF… will not come back. Maru at HB has better quality than this… and Maru to me is just medium… it is very oily and I smelled oily after the meal. I wish I have checked google review BEFORE I sit down. There were other diners has similar experience…

Ordered fried rice today with vegetables and chicken for takeaway. Got plain rice with fried egg and peas, thats it, no other vegetables, no sauce, no spices no chicken. Worst fried rice I have ever had. Never visiting this place ever again. Waste of money.

Went for dinner and found this Japanese restaurant. Authentic food. And the boss is very approachable!

Consistently disappointing. Starters and main course are served at the same time (starting with what I wanted last), service staff is sick and coughs every minute, the quality of the food leaves something to be desired. Takoyaki are completely soft on the outside and otherwise uninteresting, overall the worst I've ever had. The tonkatsu starter consists mainly of breading. The meat is very thin and is more reminiscent of a chicken mass like that used in bad chicken nuggets. In contrast to the menu picture, the tonkatsu sauce is already slapped on it. The sushi tastes stale and seems to come straight from the fridge, and no sushi ginger is served.

Very good food, fast service and amazing prices. Atmosphere is ok. There is no loud music (either none or quiet music) which is a plus, but the cutlery, table etc are definitely not the highest quality. Still love it there.

Very poor quality chicken. It had the texture of a McDonald’s chicken nugget. Not authentic or fresh at all.

Gum in the spring onions from the tofu. I had it returned and received a new portion, but in general I wasn't thrilled with the quality of the sushi.

Definitely the worst sushi I have ever had. I have walked past this place dozens of times over the years and finally had the chance to stop by to get some takeaway sushi for me and my family. What a disappointment! The salmon stank of bad fish and the egg (tamago) also tasted foul. To top it off there was a long, black hair in the “freshly” packed ginger. The food was so bad I had to throw most of it away. The worst part is I wanted to surprise everyone with something “genuine”, but I would have been far better off getting my sushi from one of those bland “chainfood” places or even at the local supermarket.

There are only 2 choices of ramen noodle here, either chicken or pork. I chose the one with pork and it was very good.

Went here for lunch on 8 May 23 after reading reviews which sounded positive. Service was friendly and attentive but the vibe of the place felt cheap (everything felt like it had a layer of oil on it). I can forgive that as I've been in some rustic places with good food, however this was not one of them. I had the chicken katsu set while my wife had the pork katsudon set. It looked good enough but on tasting the chicken katsu it had a weird texture. In closer inspection it was a thin chicken schnitzel covered in panko and refried. Except this "chicken" was made from reconstituted chicken (or mechanically recovered - whatever you want to call it) and not even in a good way. The pork in the katsudon was similar and both felt spongy as you'd expect with not much flavour. The ebi fry (prawns in panko) were fine and the best part. I'm not sure if they serve this special katsu to tourists who they'll never see again but I felt like it was an insult to any katsu let alone decent katsu. Definitely not worth the 28chf per dish.

Without having been in japan, this is the BEST japanese food I have ever tasted in my life. Grab the Tempura Udon or Katsudon if you fancy a quick escape of your everyday worries. It’s a umami experience you can’t live without! I go here religiously everytime I find myself in Zürich. The server is the sweetest lady and I hope this shop never closes!

Of the tempura plate we ordered, the tempura was good. However, instead of the kitchen paper, you could have chosen something more impressive. We expected expensive food in Switzerland, however, this is another level altogether. We had one lunch set meal each and asked for the bill, so the staff asked if we would like watermelon. Considering we had set meals, naturally we thought watermelon, such a common fruit, was included in the meals (which is the norm for Japanese set meals anyway). In the end, those watermelons cost 5 CHF EACH!? OMG. We paid, but this would be the first and last visit. Honestly can't help but feel they give Asians a bad name. With Migros and multiple supermarkets down the street, how could they, in good faith, charge 10 CHF for even less than 1 full watermelon (without even telling us when they asked)? Tap water is 1 CHF per cup and not refillable. Rip off, 10/10 will NOT recommend.

Udon soup without udon (any Italian noodles), just a few snippets of a spring onion as a topping, soggy tempura. Takoyaki were okay. The owner/waiter was very nice, but the love, care and effort is missing in the food. Owners watch TV in the dining room. This is not how I would want to represent the (really great) Japanese cuisine if I were from there myself.

Like a few years ago, the menu cards were still in their old condition and sticky. The rice was mushy, the miso soup was too salty and some fettuccine was served instead of udon. Staff friendly, but willingness to serve is low.

It was my first time eating ramen, it was much better than expected! The staff was extremely friendly. You don't expect this kind of friendliness in a restaurant and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I tried ramen and chicken skewers (yakitori) together with the sakura mochi as dessert. It was really good! Since it was my first time eating at Takano City & I have no experience at other Japanese restaurants, I can't say for sure whether it was good compared to other restaurants. I will definitely go again and try katsudon next time. A nice restaurant with more than just friendly staff, you should go there.
