Had team dinner today in the Johann tavern. As the only vegan, I was given a loving vegan alternative for every course. It was perfect. Food and service. Many thanks to the great team!

We were there for the first time this week. Very stylish, rustic and spacious restaurant. We were warmly welcomed and accompanied throughout the evening in a very friendly manner. The food was super good. Tartare, artichoke, veal with red cabbage and spaetzle, everything was very tasty. We also had well-chosen rosé and red wine. The two of us paid a total of CHF 210.-, which is absolutely reasonable. We'd love to come back!

Very fine food and top service!

We went here with a group, we had starters and a main course with dessert. There was also wine accompaniment. Everything was excellent. The service was very attentive. The atmosphere is very warm and you feel very comfortable. Will definitely come back.

Very nice restaurant, quietly located, with a nice terrace. The food was delicious, as were the wines. We had, among other things, Provençal artichoke, Schlutzkrapfen and two kinds of lamb. Attentive service, good value for money. A recommended treat!

I was there 20 minutes before my guests and therefore 20 minutes before the official opening time at 11:30. The employees all sat outside at the table and ate. I said that I had made a reservation for 11:30 and whether it would be possible to sit at the table (terrace) and wait here instead of on the street (which was 1m next to the table🤣, you don't have to pay attention to me the next time 20 minutes). The answer was: “If it absolutely has to be! We like to have lunch in peace.” Well, I thought... if you're so inflexible as a restaurant then you probably don't need it. I expect humanity in the catering industry. So the first lasting impression was that of “once and never again.” Food was nicely prepared and tasted good. Reception from the “lady from the saying 20 minutes before.” unfriendly/arrogant and overestimating herself. Luckily, there are various other restaurants nearby where the overall package fits better. Refined dishes with ingredients that you don't see so often. The food is very tasty and the eyes are also spoiled. The cuisine is flexible, for example you can combine a main course from the à la carte with starters and dessert from the large menu. Very friendly service. There were 7 of us and everyone was very satisfied.

Cozy restaurant with friendly service, good to very good lunch dishes at a slightly higher but reasonable price. Unfortunately on a neighborhood street and not in an inner courtyard.

Ambitious cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Food creative, fresh, Mediterranean. We had, among other things, pulpo carpaccio (mayo could have been left out), artichoke, fennel feta salad (fantastic!), burnt leek. Service extremely friendly, professional, fair billing (individual dishes added to a menu price!). Very small criticism 🙈: I would have liked a tablecloth or a molleton under the decker. The decker would not slip and the table support would be a little softer. But something like that can only come from colleagues. 😂 The food and service were wonderful! 🙏🏻

I have visited this twice. First one with the family was great experience. Second time we came with around 15 colleagues. We had much less attention from the staff at that time.

Went to Taverne Johann for the first time last night and it definitely won't be the last time. We had a very friendly and attentive service employee from Bologna. The food was fantastic (I order Coq au Vin). A wine is always recommended with the dishes. Great slow food concept. And the price-performance ratio is absolutely right. Thank you for the lovely evening.

I had dinner with friends at Taverne Johann last Saturday and was thrilled. The service is uncomplicated, friendly, competent and always attentive. The menu is extremely varied and also has great vegetarian dishes. Everything that finally came to the table completely convinced all of us (7 people). Overall, you feel like you are in good hands and advised and you always have the impression that you are surrounded by people who enjoy welcoming, entertaining and cooking for guests. I was there for the first time, but definitely not the last!

We were there again on Tuesday and had a wonderful evening! Beautiful, fine and regional dishes and very warm service! Thank you dear Taverne team and see you soon.

Fantastic cozy little restaurant. The chef puts a lot of thought into the beautiful and inventive dishes he prepares. Delicious of course. There's also a great selection of wines and drinks. Highly recommend that you book ahead. As starter, I had a "black forest cake" that's actually a mini tower of smoked trout, cured ham, pate and dark bread, dressed with melon and more cured ham shaving around it. As main course, I had a more "traditional" dish of stewed knuckles (lammhaxe) but hidden around the sauce reduction and salad are these crunchy bits of crusted flour helped along by perfectly stir fried kale leaves that bring this heartwarming old school dish a textured delight in every bite. This review is already getting a little long. So, all I'll say about dessert is that it's a deconstructed classic that made me want more of the meringue and berries, and I don't usually eat either. I would have gone back if I had a second night in Basel, and it seems they only open for dinner.

A gem in Basel. Cuisine creative and delicious at star level. Service super friendly and attentive. Ambiance to feel good and enjoy. The menu is small but nice with daily specials and a changing evening menu (seasonal). Here we work with sustainable organic products and, if possible, everything is processed - great concept, which also conjures up some surprises on the menu. The service team is 1-A professional and at the same time very warm, they enjoy their work. Overall, it's worthy of a star restaurant without being stuffy, but really inviting and cozy. A real enrichment for Basel and please keep it up - we'll be happy to come back!

I've been a guest at the Taverna St. Johann twice now, each time at lunchtime. Really creative, delicious cuisine at a good price. Only the service staff come across as a bit aloof, perhaps even a bit arrogant, which is a shame and unnecessary!

Today again we enjoyed the delicious food. Still one of the best restaurants in the St. Johann Quarter in Basel! Whether it's lunch or dinner, the menu tempts every time you visit, whether for vegetarians or meat lovers. Slightly upscale cuisine with neighborhood charm. A visit to the tavern is definitely worth it. The courses are created with a slight sophistication, yet still very down-to-earth. The staff is attentive and friendly. We look forward to the next visit.

Excellent experience - you can mix&match dishes from the menu and à la carte, the service was speedy and friendly, and the food outstanding in both taste and presentation. Especially the sauces were delicious, and we loved how each ingredient added to the dishes as a whole. Prices are on the higher end, but still reasonable.

We had a fantastic evening in this great restaurant. A perfect place to enjoy the last night dining out before the mandatory closing of the restaurants in Basel starting on Monday. Food was outstanding, the setting of the restaurant is quite modern yet very warm and welcoming. The staff was competent and caring. Would definitely come back when the restaurants can open again.
