Tufternalp in Zermatt

Beautifully located, our favorite cabin. If you're looking for service, you're in the wrong place, only self-service.

This place doesn't come close to having that great view. Simply a disgrace.

If you are looking for a rustic place, without hypocrisy, with mountain harshness as a welcome, then don't miss this restaurant, far from the chicos of Zermatt. The apple pie is delicious, the soup tastes like that of our Valais grandparents and the slice of cheese is enormous, all this for a reasonable price (and yes, it's possible...). And finally, it's clean.

Unfortunately fell into the trap again after January 2023. The two men working there are still very unfriendly. People were turned away from the store because they still had a little snow on their shoes, so women were allowed to take off their jackets at the door. No chilled drinks, as there is no fridge, but the shop is heated to full blast by the fireplace so that the two supervisors don't freeze. One of the two is somehow always standing at the door and reprimanding the guests. Everything was very unfriendly! Toilet use only for “consumer” purposes, but there is no proper bill even if you ask. Better drive 100 meters further and go to the hut there with the friendly people and the one-armed innkeeper! And what's not possible these days: lots of plastic cups for coffee, tea and wine because the two people are too comfortable! Very bad!

Beautifully located hut with a perfect view. Time has stopped here. Everything is like it was 50 years ago and that's a good thing.

Nice simple mountain hut in the middle of nowhere. Order at the counter (same as in many small huts all over the Alps). Indeed it is instant coffee that they serve, but in a spot like this, who cares! Down in Zermatt itself you can have all the proper coffee you want. The apple cake was good and tasty. The guy behind the counter was joking that surely I would want schnapps with the coffee, but I just said “oooh I’d better not” and that was that. Then, when I asked whether my 50 CHF note was too large, he joked about this being just the right amount for the coffee and cake. But of course he then proceeded to give me my change. Always bring cash (not Euros but Swiss francs!) with you to be able to pay in small huts like this. Just go with the flow, get your expectations down to reasonable levels and you might enjoy this place just as much as I did.

Super relaxed atmosphere, wonderful view..

Magnificent view, it's rustic and the food is very simple but good (supper, bread, cheese...), but it's the welcome that leaves something to be desired. We felt attacked at first. Never experienced this in Switzerland. Damage.

Instant coffee, cakes from the fridge and a water, €18 cards are not accepted and the request for WiFi access was answered with a "No Internet". I can't recommend it. It's a shame, the first real disappointment in Zermatt. For me this falls under the category of rip off.

Looked so cozy from the piste, but quite the opposite inside and on the terrace. Don't know if they serve food, but didn't seeanyone eating. Basic drinks are served over counter from a not particularly friendly host😏. Cash only!!!

I like the honest, unpretentious manner. The two gentlemen were never unfriendly to us, we have been coming here for years. Whether a little or a lot was consumed, always correctly and friendly. Everyone should ask themselves why threads are coming their way. We'll be back and hope everything stays that way. Thanks

The most beautiful viewing terrace above. Zermatt. Soup and alpine cheese very good.

Cute and authentic place. Owners are friendly, food is tasty and prices are good. Loved the soup, cheese and bread and the cakes are delicious!

Didn't feel welcome. Zero hospitality. It would actually be beautifully located with a great view, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. Paper cup self-service.

Rude staff, they refused to fill our water bottle with tap water when it was extremely hot outside and we had just hiked up form Zermatt. They were very rude about it and lied that the water was not drinkable. Just an incredible lack of human decency to refuse water to a thirsty hiker on a hot day, it's dangerous and selfish. Don't waste your time and money on people so horrible.

The two men who run the Alm are very rude (experienced myself several times). But you have a dream place with a perfect view of the Matterhorn. Prices are ok, but not really recommended...

Robbed by this restaurant, hot chocolate at styrofoam cost 6 CHF. And we are not allowed to sit before order anything, and the owner force to order more and more because there is no customer there. Owner shouting only cash and in Swiss franc only.

My two daughters weren't allowed to go to the toilet because we didn't drink. You can do it that way, but you don't have to.

Based on the reviews this is the worst restaurant in Zermatt so we didn't want to miss it! Some of the reviews were quite bizarre - my friend was thrown out of the restaurant years ago because he was with a group of ski instructors and didn't want to eat. So I expected the worst and was disappointed: the owner had apparently had a good day and was quite friendly. The terrace seems to have been renovated, tables repainted, nice parasols - only a few flowers are missing. The wine was in a (water) glass, not a plastic one. The view is beautiful, definitely worth a star. Cash only, no credit cards!

The first response was very friendly. However, when I told them I had no cash, their expression changed (☺️->😠) and they became very rude. 👎 Rude owners.😡 They blocked the road and told me to go back, saying I couldn't go in unless I used the store. It was a truly absurd experience because the road I took on my way back was the path to the store's restroom. I was annoyed and said, 'You can't use the restroom because you didn't buy anything at the store.'🤷🏻‍♀️ They said it was about finding the way, so they told me the way, but I didn't feel like it.

The best thing is definitely the view. The ambience is rustic and simple. I can't rate the food. The beer was good. Normally priced for Switzerland. Euros (€) were also accepted as a means of payment as a gesture of goodwill. No card payment possible.

By far the worst dining experience. Unfriendly...insensitive...inhospitable...unfortunately there is no rating lower than 1.

Comparatively fair prices compared to the other huts in the (Swiss) ski area. Magnificent and quite wind-protected view of the Matterhorn from the spacious terrace. The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the coffee could clearly be improved.

A very special place: Simple hut, there is soup, cheese, sausage, bread and cake, with very friendly hosts and a fantastic view of the Matterhorn.

I came inside after I had been injured skiing and the owner threw me out.

Brilliant little place with one of the most beautiful views of the Matterhorn. Delicious home-baked cake - only the plastic dishes take some getting used to. Cash only.

Exceptionally rude host. We were instantly pushed to order food before we had even sat down and pushed to spend more. Expensive and average drinks served in plastic cups. It is has a spectacular view of the Matterhorn, it is a shame the service is so poor.

3 Stars Pros: The most incredible view of the Matterhorn while dining. Cons: The owner was less than pleasant. He only accepted cash and was pushy to spend it all in order not to give us change back. Charged 50 euro for coffee and pie for 4. Food was decent. Pie was served cold. No one could use the bathroom without buying something.

Nice view of the Matterhorn. However, you can only pay in cash. Rather poor price-performance ratio. The Tufterlp is only recommended for a quick drink and then hiking - not for a longer stay.

Rude owners. Very pushy to get me to buy more when I only wanted a coke. Overheard them try to charge a woman double when she only had euros in cash. Wouldn't go back. The sort of place you regret giving your money to.

Very unfriendly/unwelcoming host. Older companions were allowed to leave walking sticks in front of the terrace. The owner was probably afraid of scratches on the wooden covering. -Self-service. -Cold drinks were room temperature. -Coffee is served with instant powder in a paper cup. -No card payment possible. -View is probably the only good thing. Overall, this location is absolutely wrong.

Nice view. Harsh, unfriendly service. Food is served completely carelessly and drinks have to be taken out of the terrace yourself. You can only pay with cash here. Unfortunately, they just want to get a lot of money from tourists quickly.

An almost mystical place: the Tufternalp restaurant is simple but well kept. Soup, bread, cheese and sausage, with a glass of Valais wine. You don't need anything more, because the place - embedded in sun-baked stables and alpine houses - has probably the most beautiful view of the Matterhorn. This view can be seen from the terrace, which is lined with historical-looking tables that glow in red. And in front of this terrace there is another highlight: a manger where chamois and sometimes deer come by for a snack at the end of the day.

Great spot for a late lunch and chill on the terrace. It’s rustic, traditional and off the beaten track. The view is one of the best in Zermatt. Soup was delicious, and the local cheese was excellent. Maitre D was a nice guy too. Only downside: cash only!

The view is great! The soup was also great, but the cake was not homemade as advertised. The service was a bit harsh and could have been friendlier.

Rustic snack shack in a perfect sunny spot for end-of-the-day nibbles.

We loved it. Great view and perfect for a pit stop during skiing/hiking. We aren't looking for fancy sit down service, but a beer and soup or something quick. Not sure why the complaints about the owners. They were really friendly to us and were really sweet with to our 2 year old daughter.

Price and performance are not right. However, a gigantic view of the Matterhorn.

Food worse than in the worst day schools! Were ripped off and treated dismissively. Toilet resembles a pigsty. Never again!!!

Service not very friendly. Only the soup was good. The cheese bread was literally a piece of cheap raw (!) raclette cheese with two slices of bread. The waiter requested on three occasions that we pass other customers' dishes to him as he cleared the table and grabbed our (very small) cups before we had even finished our drinks. No go!

Nice view, but the owner cleans your table while you are still eating, even if you are the only customers on the terrace. It's also kind of a rip-off. 22.- for two teas in bags with two pieces of cake, come on!

Top grade! Because this alpine hut is different from all the “Schicki-Micki” luxury huts around Zermatt. Simple mountain hut, simple map, an innkeeper with a profile.

Fantastic Pure idyll, no mass tourism, no chic chic. This is thanks to the two owners, who scare away many tourists with their quirky manner.

Nice location but very unpleasant owner. One of our party did not desire a drink so we had to leave because everybody must order a consumption.

Rather rude, unpleasant host. We left and went to another place. There's plenty around with a similar view and a cosier terrace.

Without a doubt one of the best views in Zermatt, however this is one of the worst places I've ever been to for a drink. The terrace is empty, concrete, the most uncomfortable chairs. We were told twice it's self service in the most rude manner. They are miserable with their service. The atmosphere is worse than a funeral! Avoid!

A really bad experience, the workers were very rude and stopped one of my children from using the bathroom because he said we didn't buy enough drinks. Laughable. Avoid like the plague.

We took the trail track according to the app mobile Switzerland. The trail was not hard. The views were unbelievable beautiful. A truly must have. In this case the pictures do not have any filters, and still the camera can not capture the whole awesomeness

It was awesome. Great view. Very casual. I’m from COLORADO, I’m here to ski and have a beer. If you are and off-piste skier, go here. Otherwise, stick to the groomers and there are some fine dining spots in Zermatt.

Great non-pretentious spot to have a brew. Nice guys running the place, tasty snacks and fantastic views. Cheaper, bigger beer (50ml) than other spots in the mountain. Will go back for sure. If you are going to a ski hill to ski, this is the place to go. If you want fine cuisine, go to France.

This place is awesome. Don't listen to the lame people expecting a 5 star restaurant experience. Awesome deck, service is warm and welcoming, prices are a little on the high side but your drinking and eating with a world class view in a great area. Just because someone isn't dropping a white napkin in your lap and waiting on you hand and foot doesn't mean it isn't great.

After a long walk we arrived at this large terrace with a beautiful view. The owner sat at the entrance to the terrace, but did not really make us feel welcome. There were only a few tables, of which only 1 was occupied. All chairs had their backs to the sun, when we wanted to turn our chair the owner told us that this was not allowed. We left again without ordering anything.

I have never had to rate a business so poorly: Tufternalp was the biggest disappointment. Miserable gastronomic offerings, stylish and environmentally unfriendly Styrofoam cups and plastic dishes, loveless atmosphere. Worst of all: the unfriendly, greedy old owners. Avoid this store as much as possible!
