Zum Wilde Maa in Basel

The visit to 'Zum Wilde Maa' left us with a pleasant experience. The 4-course menu was very well balanced, with a vegetarian option available. All the courses were excellent. The highlights were the mushroom risotto and the tongue from Appenzeller lamb. The dessert wein Koehler-Ruprecht Riesling Auslese 2015 was a delightful new discovery for us. The main point of the restaurant was its atmosphere and highly experienced yet friendly service team.

The local should be renamed "wild woman".

Food ok, a bit expensive. The service was so rude and unfriendly that we suspected there was a hidden camera.

It's definitely not the cheapest but it's definitely worth the money. I saw some negative comments about the hostess here: I personally found you very nice and am always happy to be served directly by the host (or :in)... The wines were delicious and went well with the respective dish. I thought the short explanation of the courses was nice. The food itself was simply delicious!

We left the restaurant with very mixed feelings. Above all because of the nature of the hostess. Interacting with her was mostly just irritating and not very welcoming. The hierarchy in the restaurant also doesn't seem very optimal for the guest. We hadn't received a card for ages and couldn't order for a long time because she was apparently the only one taking the order. When she got there, the main thing you encountered was unfriendliness. She also made some service errors, particularly a serious and irritating error with the wine service, which I unfortunately just accepted. We thought the food was good, but we can't agree with the praises. Ultimately, the taste wasn't great for the price. We don't regret that we were there. But we'll leave it at that one time because we prefer to leave a restaurant with positive feelings.

Very tasty food, small, fine menu, most of them also available per glass. Attentive and competent service!

Service is friendly. Different wines, food is good, there are also cheese plates and dessert.

I would have loved to experience the restaurant but they cancelled my reservation because I was a ‘new customer’ (mainly implying that they cannot trust me) and I was reluctant to provide my full bank /credit card details by email. If they want to secure a Non-show payment, they should do it before ‘confirming’ the reservation and they should also provide a secure system for payment. Despite the fact that I told them that I was willing to pay the deposit via a secure system and beg them not to cancel the pre-confirmed reservation. They did. Quite unprofessional in my opinion!

The Chef Menu at Wilde Maa was a wonderful culinary experience, very fine and original. With Michelin BIP Gourmand an excellent price/performance ratio. Many thanks to the kitchen and team for the attentive service and competent wine accompaniment 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍🏼

They have very attentive staff. Food and wine pairing was wonderful.

A culinary highlight and very friendly service in Kleinbasel! We ate very well and felt very hospitably looked after by all the staff. We knew the hosts with their good cuisine from Bon Vivant in the Gundeli district, where we often ate.

It was a really delicious evening! The cuisine is excellent and the wines are very well selected. However, the type of hostess (as mentioned in other reviews here) is indeed difficult. Their communication is instructive and accusatory; you often feel like a student rather than a guest. We were happy when the two other, actually very nice employees served us. With a bill of around 700 CHF, very good service should be a given. We went home with mixed feelings.

Never disappoint at restaurant Zum Wilde Maa, Basel, Switzerland. We had ensemble of six course dinner with phenomenal wine paring. Assortment of delicious Swiss Salmon Ceviche to slow-cooked Beef Shoulder and seared Pikeperch were part of our gastronomical menu.

Great food with the right wines.

Food was great but unfortunately the hostess was the unfriendly person I have ever met in a restaurant; Arrogant, condescending and even excessive when choosing the courses.

My wife had fish which was excellent whilst I had ragout which was a chewy. Meal was expensive.

We were looking forward to a nice lunch, but amazingly, within 15 minutes of arriving, we were driven out the door by the rude and disrespectful behaviour of the owner, Frau von Gunten. I’m actually still in shock. Needless to say, we won’t be back. We made a reservation for lunch, and I arrived ahead of my partner and ordered a bottle of water. When my partner arrived, we quickly decided to sit next to each rather than across from each other (it was a four-top table). Inexplicably, this seemed to greatly annoy Frau von Gunten. She questioned why we would want to do that and abruptly walked away. Her irritation was already evident. When she returned, and we began ordering, my partner ordered in German and I in English, which drew admonishment from Frau von Gunten. We have no issue with either language, so it’s not a big deal, but again, we were confused why she would care to such a strong degree. After telling us the daily menu (with already a poor attitude), I placed my order. This apparently would require additional silverware. Instead of just taking my fork/knife, she walked behind me and rudely stated that she “needed to access the table.” I was confused why that would be the case, but nevertheless stood up. After I stood up, she simply took away an extra fork from my place setting. She then walked off without taking my partners order, and without offering drinks (we wanted wine). It was then apparent that she was still grieving that we were sitting next to each other, and making me stand up was her passive-aggressive way of showing her displeasure. We were shocked. The level of pettiness and rudeness was almost comical. My partner in short order asked for the check. Frau con Gunten asked why, and was told that her behaviour was inappropriate. This is perhaps the best part—Frau von Gunten then stated she wanted to give us feedback!! I’m almost sad that we declined, I can only imagine what she would have said. Her last act of defiance was to make us wait to pay for our water. After a few minutes we decided to leave, which got her attention, and so we were finally able to pay. To summarize—horrible vibes here, stay away, unless your putting together a case study of how to NOT treat your guests. I’ve heard the food is good, but they can keep it, there’s a ton of great restaurants in Basel. Finally, I’ll note that the restaurant was empty, which makes it even more alarming that they would go out of their way to treat guests like the help.

The evening was an experience. The young waitress was very attentive and we received a friendly welcome. Everything took time. Bread with spread wasn't the HIT, so to speak as a greeting from the kitchen, but ok so far. The food that followed was very good. Warm plates, all at the same time and really taste great. However, the hostess was by no means accommodating or friendly. When they had questions, he just kept talking stubbornly and didn't respond to the guests politely, rather condescendingly. When it came to wine, every glass she poured was always under 1 dl - this was also noticed by other guests - when a guest made a comment, she got the bottle and poured it energetically - half of it was still on the table. That was really very out of place and a shame for these guests. Because of this incident, I'm not sure whether I'll visit a host like that again - no matter how good the food is. In short: food very fine, hostess should not work in service, ambience ok but not promising (no music, no candles), interior nice (although the floor could have been renovated at the same time, it doesn't fit the furnishing concept at all).

Superfine food without any frills. The Chef’s Menu 6++ is always wonderful, including cheese from Maître Antony. Plus a very good wine accompaniment. One of my favorite places at the moment.

The food, wine, ambiance - all excellent. Servers and host very polite, accommodating and informative. We reserved for 6:30pm and 4/5 of us had the 4 course chef's menu - at 9pm we were 2 courses through the menu and my mother (who ordered three courses) had only eaten bread and soup. The wait between courses ~40-50 min, wine for the the course served 20 min before it arrived. We later noticed that most diners did not have food on their tables and the one next to us received a dish they didn't order. When our main course finally arrived, other diners who had entered the restaurant an hour after us received the same course. It seems like there may have been some communication and timing issues (aside from the extremely slow pace, we were offered water twice before it arrived; silverware placed and removed 30 min before food, my mother started to receive wine pairing without having ordered it). Again fantastic food - but for the wait and ultimately the price I cannot say we fully enjoyed. I only wonder now if it was an exception.

We sat in the little arbor and enjoyed a wonderful evening. The food was excellent, we were lovingly cared for and served, and the price was appropriate for the quality. Everything is just right!

Would I come again, unfortunately not. However the food was fantastic. I had the menu with 4 courses, Salmon, Walleye, Veal and cheese. The fish was cooked perfectly the skin of the salmon crunchy with hints of salt and innside still very "pink". Same for the walley. The veal was cooked too much for my liking and was not very tender. The cheese plate was also great complemented by a sweet wine which was by itself mouthwatering. Now unfortunately the only downside I experienced. As we wanted to pay, we asked for separate checks, however she said that wouldn't be possible, we should have mentioned this before we ordered. I said that no one asked us if we wanted separate checks. The discussion went on and the lädt thing she said it was not typical for Switzerland to ask for separate cheques. Sounded pretty arrogant to me which left a little bitter taste for the great food. Oh and one more thing, the chairs are super uncomfortable.

It's our favorite restaurant! Great food, great service, great hostess! Ms. von Gunten is brilliant and not run-of-the-mill, nor is the kitchen and that's exactly what makes this restaurant so excellent! This restaurant is highly recommended to anyone who appreciates good cuisine!

Me and my family, in various configurations, have already been to Wilde Maa for dinner about 5 times. Every time, without exception, the food was flawless and in the highest leagues. When it comes to operation, however, a clear distinction must be made. The young ladies who serve but are not allowed to collect or take orders (at least it always seemed that way to us) were extremely competent and courteous. However, the hostess, Ms. von Gunten, offers a significantly different experience. It conveyed to us, sometimes more sometimes less, that we were (at least) one step lower in an outdated hierarchical order that, when applied, was particularly disadvantageous in the catering sector. Be it in the form of eternally long waits to be able to “order or pay”, unfriendly rejection when you want to make a reservation on site or a “condescending” manner when explaining the menu. In summary, one can say that the food is great, the ambience is generally good, but the service by Ms. von Gunten gives the visit a bad aftertaste, which deters us from further visits. Hopefully Ms. von Gunten, in her role as hostess, will play as small a role as possible in the future, because her appearance as such always seemed to be more important to us than the current experience for the customer.

My partner and I were looking forward to a cozy evening and a good meal. When we opened the restaurant door, we almost fell over a table that prevented us from entering the restaurant. The door behind us could no longer be closed due to lack of space and we were left in the cold. Ms. von Gunten, the boss, checked our certificates and IDs in an unfriendly manner. We were then accompanied to what we thought was the worst table in the restaurant - despite having made a reservation of around 5 days in advance. The food was very good, the two young ladies who served us were very nice and competent. Ms. von Gunten persistently ignored us and didn't even ask whether we were satisfied with the food. This very rude behavior irritated us and we decided to give her what we thought was friendly but honest feedback. After paying the bill (over CHF 220.00), we kindly pointed out to Ms. von Gunten how we had experienced our visit to the restaurant with her. However, that didn't go down well. Ms. von Gunten reacted angrily. She said that she didn't like us from the start (probably the reason for the bad seating) and that we wouldn't fit in this restaurant and anyway that she didn't have time and had to go back to work and just ran away. Both of us were at a loss for words. It was the first and last time we visited this restaurant. Annotation: We spent the afternoon in the city center and wore a normally well-groomed outfit.

Exquisite dishes prepared to a high standard, attentive and friendly service, simple and practical furnishings. We recommend.

The food is excellent and beautifully presented. The ingredients come from selected local producers, so the dishes are seasonal. The restaurant is furnished with selected design pieces and the lamps are great. The service is top. We have enjoyed being guests of Mr. Schürmann and Ms. von Gunten for years, have never been disappointed and are therefore always happy to come back.

Great food. Follow up from the Bon Vivant. Great to have them back.
