African Queen in Zürich

Very tasty food that you can't get everywhere.

Me and my friends came to this restaurant several times and we LOVED it every time. The restaurant owner, Gerry, truly pays attention to his guests and -needless to say- also makes amazing food. Just go for it.

African Queen is a true gem! The service was incredible and friendly. I felt like I was over at a friend’s home for a delicious dinner. The menu offered an extensive selection of gluten-free options and the flexibility to make non-gluten-free items gluten-free. Plus, they even offered gluten-free beer (Mulu Amber) and delicious gluten-free cakes (Chestnut Cake). The authentic African cuisine is a delightful journey of flavors, making it the best restaurant in Zurich for an unforgettable dining experience.

Excellent African cuisines. The service was really superb, the man serving us really went all the way to treat the six of us. Also, first time i tasted Zebra steak & grasshoppers...awesome.

I had the pleasure of indulging in their lamb curry with pap, and it was an absolute delight! The lamb was tender, and the curry was rich and flavorful, with just the right balance of spices. Paired with the traditional pap, it created a satisfying and authentic dining experience that I won't soon forget. Highly recommended for anyone craving a taste of Africa in the heart of Switzerland!

We ate here today with our 2 children. Both we and the kids enjoyed it very much. For my standards, the food could have been spicier. Quiet atmosphere even though it's right on the main street. Very friendly owner.

Tiny dining room but it feels quite cozy. The waiter/owner(?) just radiates gentle kindness. I had the lamb stew, which was good, but in hindsight I regret not taking the lentil or peanut based dishes, which looked downright excellent. … alright, here’s the hindsight: both lentil and peanut based dishes are fantastic. My new favorite is actually the peanut one.

Yesterday I had dinner at African Queen with a friend. She had an African vegetable dish and I had a lamb curry. Both tasted very good, and the chai was also excellent. The only thing that's even better is the service and the ambience: very warm and cozy.

Zurich's hidden secret serving DELICIOUS cuisine!!! The restaurant had rave reviews, so I decided patronize with them while in Zurich. The cozy atmosphere was very calming. And Gerry, the owner, made me feel like family. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ordering the zebra steak, mixed vegetables, and rice. All was very flavorful. It is served with tasty plantain chips and peanut sauce; which calmed my palate after eating some of the heated sauce (good, but HOT).

Having recently returned from a visit to Tanzania, I was thrilled to discover the wonderfully authentic African Queen!

The shopkeeper with a very gentle tone first treated us to a plate of banana chips, which had a light taste and were very fragrant after chewing. Although it was noon, the owner said that if we wanted to eat, dinner meals could also be served. We ordered rinds chaps and lamb stew. The stewed mutton is tender and delicious and has a lot of meat. Highly recommend the rinds chaps. They feel like spiced beef patties that have been pounded and marinated. They are super delicious. In addition to two drinks, we also ordered iced chilli chocolate cake. Although I was a little afraid to try it at first, I have to say that the chili neutralized the sweetness of the chocolate cake and the sourness and bitterness of the coffee. It was a great combination and completely opened the door to a new world (chili was paired with chocolate by my wife and I) Eat it all in two or three mouthfuls)

My partner who is from Eastafrica and I have been looking to try out the different places offering such food for our craving of authentic African food experience. Gerry the owner has been running this lovely place for several years and we have been greated by him in the most loving way. He is truly a kind hearted person making everyone feel welcome. In terms of food it's definitely authentic and we did enjoy and will return. We would have wished for a bit more detail to for example offer the real biryani rice instead plain rice with the lamb biryani but maybe that's a matter of interpretation. Also for the starter we ordered an avocado tomato salad (really good) and samosas, where it was only one piece served for 10chf which we find pretty heavy pricing and would have loved to see 2 pieces on the plate for that. We will in anyway return and can recommend to anyone looking to get a flavor of our much loved Eastafrica cuisine.

We were there for a birthday, its a small place but the atmosphere was great. The owner is super friendly and fun, the food was amazing. I had the lamp biryani and fried bananas as a side dish, I must say I was full but it was worth 100%. Would go again! :)

The host was very kind, although it is usually closed at the time we went, they still let us come in as the place was due to be reserved for a large party of people. Great comfortable atmosphere. Delicious food. I used to live in South Africa when I was young and loved Pap(Mealie Pap/ Ugali) but I haven’t had it since then because it’s really hard to find and make and also very expensive, until now. After eating one of my favourite dishes more than a decade later, nostalgia hijacked me, but it wasn’t the memory that made it delicious, it was beautifully made. The moment it touched the table, I couldn’t wait to take a bite(excuse the bitten food in the photo). The host was a very warm and friendly person, who conversed with us about our stay in Africa and even offered us a complimentary drink purely out of kindness.

If you’re looking for some special cuisine and friendliness in this city, this is the right restaurant for you. I’m usually very picky on foods but I’m very pleased by the atmosphere and food around here. What I like the most is the tomato peanut sauce and fried banana-kelewele. Gerry is a great person and super nice talking to! I’m definitely coming back again!

A real surprise... We tried a fish and a meat dish -zebra- very nice and properly cooked. The place is small, but with a familiar style. If you like to try different dishes don't hesitate... it is worth a visit.
