We were able to spend a wonderful evening here with our team. The food was next level, the service was just great and we felt totally at home. Each course was prepared with a lot of love and was a new culinary experience. It was simply a wonderful evening that definitely needs to be repeated :)!!!

I’m not one to leave reviews but this made me really angry. Our experience was terrible. The owner is nice but he definitely does not know how to run a restaurant. He had a ‘surprise menu’ for us. We sat there for 2 hours and only got 2 tiny starters. We couldn’t even get through the whole surprise menu as he kept us waiting for so long. We left hungry and frustrated simply because we couldn’t sit there any longer. We got there at 6.20 and only got served 2 starters by 8.20. The service was so bad, he had 0 waiters and was tending to the customers and the reception himself. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go here. The owner means well and the food tasted good, its just that he doesn’t have the talent to run a restaurant. After being served two bite sized starters in two hours, we decided to leave and were charged CHF 358, the entire bill.

My wife and myself, where there on lovely Sunday evening - the food was delicious and the service was excellent. Everything was created with so much love and effort, provided a lot of information where the food came from, what ingredients have been used, and what exactly was on the plate. Keep in mind, you will get a 5-course surprise menu, based on your likes and dislikes, allergies or intolerances. The menu is costly but definitely worth it, you will also get a full stomach with that price, the portion's are perfectly sized. The staff was amazing and was looking to provide a really good service. What I really appreciated was that it was shown as real Mexican food, which can be eat and was also recommended to eat with your fingers. Also the freshly made chilli-sauce was amazing with ingredients from the garden. I highly recommend this place for authentic Mexican food.

A great, atmospheric restaurant, even in the new location. The owners are very friendly and authentic. The food and drinks are really delicious, lovingly prepared and a great change from the “usual” Mexican dishes. Highly recommended!

We had an incredible experience at El Alebrije. The surprise menu consisted of five courses, all of which were outstanding and full of flavor. Unlike in some other restaurants with a similar concept, the portions were nicely sized. We left very satisfied, but not overly full. Miguel, the owner, was an excellent host and checked on us frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. He was very attentive and created a very nice atmosphere. We will definitely go back. It's probably the best Mexican restaurant in Zurich.

Pure rip off!!! 125.- for a 5-course/surprise menu is very expensive. The quality, service, etc. would have to be right. But unfortunately it doesn't!

My friend and I had the best experience at El Alebrije. We arrived late on a Saturday night after our flight into Zurich. Miguel, the owner, was extremely welcoming and told us all about the menu and the food options. I had a delicious margarita and the food was amazing, probably the best Mexican food I have ever had. Miguel was so kind and gave us so many recommendations for things to do in Zurich. Our time at El Alebrije was an amazing start to our stay in Zurich.

From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with a warm smile by the owner, who was also our server. What truly made this experience exceptional was the owner's incredible friendliness and attentiveness. To top it off, the owner was also very kind and considerate towards my 8-month-old daughter. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking an outstanding Mexican dining experience. Texas guy here…Started off with spicy margarita and it was amazing! Then ordered the guacamole for two with three different chips for gauc and three salsa’s to dip into. The Birria is like a soup and was delicious, the Pablono pepper was good as well. Thank you Miguel!

Had a fantastic experience at El Alebrije tonight and am actually somewhat surprised by some of the reviews I read as I went to post this. As a Californian who has been in Europe for a month, I was craving some comfort food and really was satisfied by the Mexican cuisine at El Alebrije. The jalapeno margarita was on point, the flautas were on par with what I would expect from a local food truck at home (a good thing!) and the pescado was well seasoned (and the owner Miguel was incredibly kind and brought me homemade blue corn tortillas to make the plate my own). I also really appreciated the trio of salsas - reminded me of my fave taqueria in SF and each salsa had a truly different flavor profile and level of spice. They also all paired nicely with the dishes, which isn't always the case with a salsa bar. For what it's worth, I had the opposite experience of many of the other commenters and felt that service was more than adequate - my order was taken immediately, menu choices were described clearly even with a language barrier, I was checked on multiple times, and I didn't have to wait at all for a second drink order or to get the bill. Maybe it's because I've been in some more "relaxed" parts of Europe for the past month, but this was by far the most attentive service I've had in weeks. The vibe is good, ambiance trendy and it felt like a "less explored" neighborhood of Zurich - would absolutely recommend. For any Americans out there, it isn't going to be your classic huge menu / Tex Mex fajitas a la Chuy's or Cozymel's (nor is it purporting to be!), but it is going to be similar to what you'd get at an authentic Oaxacan place in NYC or LA.

The selection is very limited. There are only blue tortillas and the boss tries to explain that these are actually the luxury version in Mexico. Chiles en Nogada only available as a veggie, I've never seen them in Mexico (I lived in the region where they come from). Tacos al pastor have nothing in common with the original ones in Mexico. Only the Sopa de Tortilla was good and it wasn't really that complicated to make. All in all, this restaurant doesn't have much to do with Mexico. The prices are high, you can get more for less elsewhere (also more authentic).

One of my favorite restaurants in Zurich. Their Mole is amazing. It's also one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the world (my comparison is primarily to Mexican restaurants in Silicon Valley). But be aware that what they're serving is very different from the type of Mexican street food one gets elsewhere in Zurich. They're much more authentic than that.

An incredible gastronomic and cultural experience. The chef is extremely friendly and cordial. The food is worth every franc.

High quality food, and the owner is a great person.

In my opinion this restaurant is a complete rip off. Small portions, little choice, the obligation to choose at least a two-course menu, too little vegetarian selection and it wasn't of any quality either. My beef stew was full of huge lumps of fat and meat. You couldn't eat half of the meat because it tasted stringy and fatty. We ended up paying over 100 CHF each for dinner. For the money you can get much better food in Zurich, such as beef fillet or similar. It may be that it is an authentic Mexican restaurant (I don't know Mexico), but as many people have already written before me, the price-performance ratio is not right for me at all.

Really nice ambience, very good service explaining everything thoroughly, cocktails were very good, don’t miss the al pastor or duck mole. Walked in at 2000 on a Saturday night without reservations, online said everything was full, but we found a table without any problem.

As a Mexican living in Switzerland I’ve felt like coming home. You taste the love and effort that is put in every plate. The service was also professional and we felt welcomed. Almost like eating at my grandmother’s.

Very good atmosphere, helpful service. Real Mexican food, not the standard buritos, quesidallas and enchiladas that you get at other restaurants. More specialized with almost everything made in house. Costs are somewhat higher than average. Approximately 80-120 euros per person.

Terrible experience, stay away from this place for your own good. In short: Very long wait and wrong food. I usually don’t write reviews but this was so bad I decided to write one. Over 2 hours wait on a Sunday evening and the after the 2 hours we got different things than we ordered from the menu. Even though the food was essentially good the experience has ruined it for me and would never order or go to this place again.

Complete disaster. Place is pleasent but had to wait over one hour and a half to get food. Menu is very small with just a few dishes, food is at best average, portions are small and it's very surprising that with such a small menu they still can't get the service or the food right. Staff is nice and it's not their fault the problem in the kitchen but the overall experience is not good.

Good tasting food, super slow service, and overall not good value for money. We had a 2 course dinner for 2 hours and 40 minutes because we had to wait very long for all the dishes (40 minutes for dessert only). An appetizer and 4 small tacos for 69 CHF was in hindsight not worth it.

You have to provide a credit card for an online reservation and you then have the right to charge CHF 70 if you don't show up. Outrageous.

I’d give El Alebrije a well deserved 4.5 stars. My partner and I tried it already for dinner and really liked their twist on Mexican cuisine. As my partner lived in Mexico before, he enjoyed the twist of this restaurant. It’s more on the pricey end, but there’s quality ingredients and a sophisticated setting. The brunch was mainly savoury. I took the enfrijoladas, which were very good - slightly dry and hard outside, but the taste was there. He took the chilaquiles, good as well. The restaurant’s take was to serve them with steak even if it’s not the traditional way (meat was great!). I wish I could have closed on a sweet note (they didn’t have the bisquet) but at least the orange juice was sweet enough. I appreciated having a full glass (something which rarely happens when brunching, as the juice is usually served in wine/Prosecco glasses). Overall: a bit expensive, for sure filling and good. I encourage trying!

That was definitely my absolute Mexico highlight in Zurich! If you don't feel like Tex-Mex and are looking for typical Mexican dishes, you've come to the right place! Everything has been thought through with great attention to detail. From the plates to the self-painted pictures on the walls, everything is just right. The small menu impresses with its simplicity. The food is prepared to a high standard with fresh ingredients and served lovingly. A culinary flight of fancy that has its price but is worth every franc. You can feel the passion with which the restaurant is run. Definitely deserves 5 stars!!

I said only the main course and then they brought me a 3 course menu because the waitress couldn't speak German and something like that cost an unbelievable 230 for I feel ripped off

Let's start with the positives: the interior is nicely designed, the place is cozy and the staff is really friendly. However, the concept didn't really work for us. The menu is rather small (3 dishes each for starters, tacos and mains) and they seem to only offer a menu starting with 2 of these dishes for 69 CHF. Unfortunately, when we were there the only vegetarian main dish wasn't available hence we took tacos as mains. Which was just not enough food! Especially the vegan version of the flautas was extremely basic. As with many restaurants, for making the dishes vegan they remove calorie dense ingredients like cheese etc. yet they didn't consider adding more to make it a full meal and enough to eat! I would assume that main dish had not more than 300 calories total (perfect for dieting which wasn't our intention though). Yet, obviously, we paid the same price as the meat based main dishes. Our friend had the mole which was actually really good and a proper portion sizes including 2 side dishes (rice and tortilla). Making a veggie version of that would be a good idea as as the mole sauce was really good. Overall, the value for money was poor. So either the restaurant needs to ramp up their service level in general (lots of waiting, badly managed & chaotic) as well as the quality of their (vegetarian) dishes, or they need to reduce prices by at least 30%.

Excellent service, food and attention

My friends and I visited El Alebrije a little less than 3 months ago. I don't know which above-average positive comment I should start with, because everything was right. From Dani's excellent service, to the relaxed and elegant atmosphere, to the authentic food, everything was absolutely great! In addition, Dani was able to give each of us very good recommendations and you could tell that he took the time for each of us so that we could all have a great evening. This restaurant is one of the best, if not the best restaurant I have had the pleasure of visiting. El Alebrije is the perfect place to spend a cozy and special evening. The memories remained firmly anchored in my mind until now. Thanks again and bravo!

We had an outstanding meal here. We went for the 5 course surprise menu and had a huge variety of dishes, also catering for gluten intolerance. The cocktails were great too. Also, the waitresses were really friendly and helpful 🙂

Super Ambiente, Super Bedienung, Supper Essen!

Food itself was good, but this is the only positive thing about this place. The waiting time was absurdly long (over 2.5 hours until we received the main dish). When asking the waiter how long until the food, the waiter's response was "the food comes when it is ready" or "just oder more drinks then". Not the kind of answer you want to hear as a customer. On top, the prices are way too much for what you get, and the portions are tiny!

Very nice interiors and cool place, very sweet waitress, the juevo rancheros was spot on, been craving it a while! Would be interesting to check it out for dinner.

I have to say this is a difficult rating for me, I would like to give 3.5 and I'm going to explain why. The place is very nice and the personnel extremely kind and friendly. We had a pleasant chat with them before dinner, and really felt welcome. Food really surprised me: it was full of taste and quite elaborate, quality wise it was simply excellent. The problems we experienced are 2: first of all, we had to wait more than one hour to get our main after the starter. This is really unacceptable. I understand that problems in the kitchen can happen, but you can't just leave the table alone for such long time and only apologize once the customer complains at the moment of paying. I would have appreciated if someone came to the table explaining that there was a problem, as simple as that. The second thing is that I didn't like how the menu works, I would have preferred a more traditional way of choosing dishes. After all, we felt that we paid way too much for what we got, considering Zurich standards of course. Someone left a similar review stating he wanted to give between 3 and 4 stars, and at the end he gave 4, so I am going with 3 stars just to get the average we both intended.

5 star experience from A-Z! Fantastic food, the duck was gorgeous and the churro interpretation was a great finale! Cohesive ambience, Mexican music and all in all a well-rounded concept. The service is also absolutely great; you rarely experience something like that these days. Friendly, attentive and in a good mood even under the greatest stress. Just as an anecdote: When guests at the next table were on the toilet, their napkins were freshly folded by the service...that level of attentiveness is what I mean! I will gladly come again!

This was a strange restaurant experience. First let me say the staff are absolutely fabulous, really lovely and helpful, but after that is all goes down hill a bit. The menu is really confusing. You order by number of courses, but you're still just picking from a menu and some things can be a starter or a main, but others can only be starters and if you order two starters one has to be a small portion... Working out how to get what you wanted, as the size you wanted, in the order you wanted was pretty bamboozling. The starters and taco courses were nice. Quite tasty actually, but for the price underwhelming. The main course is where things went totally off the rails, the duck is basically a dry DIY taco dish (the meat fell of the bone, but there was no sauce or anything, so it was just dry duck and cactus in a taco) and the fish dish was just odd. It felt like they had just warmed up a massive puddle of the ceviché dressing to put on it. It was unpleasant. The team were nice, but the food took a long time. We were there for almost three hours to eat three courses and decided not to stay for dessert because we were just bored. This place could be really nice, but they need to figure out how to keep the food service on track (everyone around us was also complaining about the speed or lack there of) and just fix the strange main courses.

Friendly staff but the food was really inedible.

We visited it last night to celebrate my husband birthday. It was our first visit and it wasn't great. We had to wait 50min to get the first course, (they were nice to offer us a Tequila shot to compensate) but then had to wait a very long time (over 30min) for the main course. We needed over 2h for a 2-course dinner, we were tired and didn't even want dessert. For the food, I expected more to be honest, not bad, just nothing surprising or perfect. The tacos al pastor and the duck were a bit dry and the rest didn't really make us remember mexico, very little spices and flavour, maybe adjusted too much to swiss taste? For what we got, the prices felt quite high, not sure if I would recommend it, there are more reliable places in zurich for that price range

Very tasty food, I wouldn't call tacos Al pastor authentic but close enough. Horchata and tamarind drinks were amazing. Also Chile relleno was not 💯

Very nice place to discover a new side of Mexican cuisine. Nice and calm location and a great atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and made our night that little bit more special. Definitely going again!

Flavorful and lovely setting, but very pricey. The server was really personable and kind. Tried the duck and sopasitas. Both good. Guacamole was not the right consistency but tasted good.

Got the fish Tacos for take away. Fish is very crispy and even if they look tiny the 4 tacos are quite a meal. I took the green and the mild salsa and both were lacking salt/spices and didn't taste much. As a take away its quite expensive, you pay 32 chf for 4 tacos (+ cheese). During lunch this competes against pizza, pasta and kebab which are all in 15-25 chf range!

The cocktails are really good. Food is ok but not very special. It does not justify the high prices. They charge like fine dining but the served food is casual Mexican food.

Really high price point considering the extremely poor service. We came here at the beginning of the year and had a problem with literally every single course of our meal. This was all down to the staff not listening and bringing the wrong food/bringing food containing allergens. We tried to stay very polite with the staff but they started to make quite snarky comments. I also found the food and cocktails had declined in quality since I came here before. I wont come here again and I am pretty sure none of the other people who joined us will either. It's a real shame because the owner has put a lot of effort into the restaurant, but none of that matters if you aren't polite to guests.

Went there for dinner last week. Drinks and service were great. A big turnoff (and reason not to go back for me ) is the rigid set up they have where you are forced to take at least two courses and it has to be either appetizer and main or main and dessert. Unfortunately they didn't even allow getting two appetizers. The food was ok, but i left feeling overly full and a bit ripped off as i did not want to order so much food in the first place....

My friend and I visited El Alebrije on a nice Friday evening and had an excellent evening. The service was great, very attentive and caring anf always offering good explanation to the food and drinks. The food is really high quality and truely authentic Mexican. I travelled Mexico intensively over the years and have not had this type of experience outside of Mexico before. The price is definitely well deserved for what you get and we will come back for sure !!

This place serves authentic, high quality, homemade Mexican food. Also, don’t pass up the tequila! When they say it’s smooth, they are not kidding. I was expecting so much more given the description of the food and prices. Food is not bad but nothing really special. Although waiters were nice, service was not good. We had to ask many times for the things and waited so long for them.

I had Mexican brunch here on Sunday, never heard of it before so I was curious to try. I had Chilaquiles as it's the most traditional. It definitely was good however be warned, you don't feel like jumping around and going to the gym afterwards.. It's on the heavy side and as a non-Mexican I'd appreciate some more veggies :D but then it's probably not authentic. Got a delicious medium spicy sauce with it. I tried the Frijolada and while I expected this dish to be heavy, it wasn't. In fact I really liked it and would order it next time. The tortillas had a wonderful corn flavour. Staff was absolutely adorable, both really kind and smiling. I'll definitely return, but I am curious to try their dinner dishes as that card has more items on it. Don't be sacred of burning your tongue, I think the flavours are authentic but they don't make the food spicy.

We came here for brunch on a sunny Sunday and were very happy with everything. The quality of the food was amazing with well balanced flavors and quantity. However, what really stood out was the service. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to satisfy any requests. I would definitely return to experience dinner next time I’m in town.

One of the most difficult place to rate for me. 3 is too little 4 is too much. The interior is very nice. Waiters are super nice, only if you get the white shirt dirty you should change it. It's kills the experience getting food from a waiters with dirty clothes. The cocktail was amazing! 5* straight away! The flavors were constantly changing coming one after another. Never drank anything so good! The food was good! Elaborated with interesting flavors. The tacos were very good, but you get only 2. The Flautas were a bit too basic. And there goes the first course. The main course was better. The leg was tasty and nice soft meat falling of the bone. The other typical dish was not bad, but also not amazing. It was sitting on a lot of sauce, which gave it the main flavor. All in all its a too much money for what you get. Maybe a standard concepts of plates and ordering any was for normal prices would be a better way to go. For now it is not a place we are planning to return

Great vibe and friendly staff but the food is really not worth 30 CHF for one taco and 40 CHF for a meat soup. Authentic Mexican food is so good, you really don’t need to make it gourmet or turn it into some fusion with sample size portions. Menu has limited choices and everything is just very overpriced. 5 Stars, for everything!! Food experience incredible!! Drinks incredible!! Service ✨✨✨✨

It was our first time at the alebrije. We were really excited to hopefully get some authentic flavors and feeling of home that evening - but alas - left with a somewhat bitter taste. The service is amazing, the waiters very friendly and attentive. The cocktails are super yum and really strong. With a Margherita I’d expect salt or Chile on the rim - this was missing and would have added another level to the cocktail - for the price that can be expected. We ordered sopa azteca, wanted to share a portion of pastor, and then birria and Pato. The sopa lacked all the flavours of smoked chile, came with 1 tiny piece of avocado and 3 pieces of cheese. Basically tomato soup with some fried tortilla. Was not impressed. The taco was probably the most laughable thing I’ve ever seen. They served us 1 taco - which looking at the cost of the taster menu will have cost … 20-30chf. For 1 taco. The meat was meaty, the sauces too weak and watery for my liking and could have done with more flavor. Not impressed. I’ve had better Al pastor in Switzerland off taco trucks. Our main menu was tasty, but the whole experience was just funny. We were given 3 tortillas in the first run which obviously lasted 1 minute. I was given app. 1 cilantro leave chopped to oblivion and even less onion (why not red??) for the birria. It was mainly soup, some marrow and a tiny bit of rice. The pato was really tasty from what I tried, the ensalada de nopales lacked all flavor. As someone whose worked in hospitality and loves cooking Mexican food (and being Mexican) I found the experience to be strange. We paid 300chf incl tips for what I felt was good worth max 200. Way too expensive and flavors didn’t convince.

Staff super friendly and attentive, there's nothing to complain about. Unfortunately, the price-performance ratio isn't right here at all. 4 drinks, 2 small starters and 2x tacos (also rather small portions) for 240.- is steep even for Zurich. For the money, you can tickle your palate much more at other addresses in the city.

Great food,drinks, service & ambience. Interior is just wonderful. The best Mexican restaurant I have been too. A must visit if you are looking for authentic mexican food.

One of the most beautiful and stylish Mexican restaurants in Europe! Great atmosphere and beautifully decorated, we felt like we were in Mexico! The prices are high, but the food and experience are worth every cent! The drinks are also great (El Mimo is highly recommended)!

Great and flavourful menu in a modern and cosy atmosphere. Friendly and professional staff that made you feel at home. After having chosen a 2-meal-menu, we left the restaurant with happy stomachs. Would gladly come back!

Very dissatisfied. CHF 69 for 2 courses - hardly full. The portions, especially starter, were tiny! Food was absolutely nothing special, comparatively bad (especially for the price level). Wine is topped up to the last detail, which I find unsympathetic/inhospitable. The music was so loud and tables were so close together that it was difficult to have a conversation - not a relaxed atmosphere. The only positive thing I can say is friendly service, although it wasn't very attentive.

Food and cocktails excellent, although the menu is a bit small and you are unfortunately forced to order at least two courses.
