Hintergeissboden in Zug

It is an excursion restaurant on the Zugerberg that is completely overrun on weekends when the weather is nice. But on my several visits, I've always eaten well, sometimes with longer waiting times, but with this rush it's totally bearable - we have the day off and I've observed what the service employees have to do and endure and have every respect for these people and a big thank you for that . Everyone who writes and was satisfied should definitely read 100s of reviews.

Two coffee cream and a piece of Zug cherry cake, self-service, for CHF 19.50.-. The products were of good quality, no question, but the price was steep, especially for self-service.

We spent wonderful hours here. The entire staff is very friendly and well-positioned. Very quick service. The food is just super delicious. We can definitely recommend it and would be happy to come back.

We always visit this restaurant after our hike. We really like it there. From the ambience to the service to the food, you are always in the right place. Friendly service, delicious food. What more do you want..

Dogs not really allowed…. Questionable. Children scream, etc. I have children myself. The older person served was very unfriendly, the young one was very friendly. A Wähe 8.- no sorry, that doesn't work at all.

We were served by a very unfriendly lady. When a roof avalanche came down...all of our drinks were spilled. There is a sign warning against this. Nevertheless, a replacement drink could still be served in such an incident. Which is the case in a reasonably decent restaurant. However, the lady was not interested in this at all. I asked her for a dry napkin when she served the food. Even this request was ignored!

Uncomplicated, friendly and good

Very nicely done restaurant with lots of wood and a nice outdoor terrace. We had coffee and cake for a snack.

Very nice mountain restaurant near Zug. Especially now with all the snow the surroundings look absolutely gorgeous. Busy with cross-country skiers and hikers. It only takes 20 minutes by car to reach and is definitely worth the trip. As an alternative, take the cable car up from the city of Zug.

Second visit here and loved it again. A welcome sight during a trek up the mountain.

Edwin and his team provide excellent service and enchant your stay with their warmth. Extra requests are welcome and will be implemented perfectly. I love going for a hike and then stopping off. Or just drive up the mountain in the evening and have dinner. Just great! Thank you for the beautiful moments 😃

Service was quick and correct, although not with much joy or friendliness. The location of the restaurant is good and the terrace is spacious, the furnishings are functional and simple, and the menu is fairly standard. The French fries that were served came within 3 minutes, but were old, brown and rubbery. Card payment only at the counter (was called across the restaurant from behind the counter). Ok for a quick refreshment on a hike, but not for connoisseurs.

Cozy, warm – nice that it’s open again.

The food was ok. The price for the cordon bleu was fair. The French fries that came with it were hardly salted. The Älpler Macaroni was a small portion and not justified for the price of 26.- Fr. (there was also a mini soup). The service staff was unfriendly and we waited forever for the food (if we had two small children with us we had to wait 45 minutes for the food even though there were only about 6 menus) We won't be coming back and would rather roast on a fire pit on the Zugiblubbiweg.

The worst restaurant experience I have ever had in my 8 years of living in Switzerland. The food was below average and it was bad value for money. We are a family with two kids and we had to wait around half an hour to order, one hour for the meal to arrive and then another half hour to pay. This is the first review I write but the bad experience deserves it.

Very friendly, nice service, very nice rural area

Never again. Bottom drawer service. At first I was greeted with "whose turn is it?" greeted after I had to wait quite a long time at the counter. Afterwards I was yelled at because I wanted to pay with a card and not cash. In the end the situation almost escalated when the employee shouted at me that card payments were too much hassle. Even my little son asked me in shock why the evil woman was screaming like that. I have never experienced so much customer unfriendliness in my life and I am horrified.

Worst dining experience in Switzerland. Waited 30 minutes for someone to pick up our order, another 1.20h for food to be served. When asking about the estimated time, you get a rude tone and answer. Below average food. Stressful and unpleasant experience especially if you are with a kid. P.s. I never give reviews, but this one was so poor, that it deserved my time.

Some of the other reviews are true. We also had a bad experience: we waiter 1 hour for the food, with a small child. The food itself was below average. Unfortunately there are no other options nearby, and the place can get quite full. The flies inside the restaurant were also unpleasant.

Despite speaking fluent Swiss German, I was repeatedly addressed in High German, and at times, in a condescending manner as if I didn't understand. This made me uncomfortable and was clearly a result of my appearance not aligning with their expectations. What bothered me even more was their payment policy. I was told I couldn't pay by card for a small order consisting of just an ice cream and chips, which amounted to CHF 9. This felt like an unnecessary inconvenience. Both owners were very unfriendly and discriminating us just because we look different.

We were waiting for 25 minutes in a cloud of flies with two small kids for somebody to take our order. Ok, being a sunny Sunday afternoon, terrace was full but inside half empty. When asking if we could finally order, the arrogant answer came: they take orders at the table... We rather just left, there are other places where they are happy to have customers. Staff up!

Lots of flies, stressed staff, left the restaurant without ordering. We'll take our money somewhere else.

Bad service from you, no thanks, I'd rather go a few steps further where I'm welcome as a guest

Service was very unfriendly. And for a children's plate of fries with 3-4 chickens 16.50 is crazy...

Very fine food, very nice service, homely restaurant.

The food was good, but as a non-Swiss person you first swallow at the prices. A Wupper, Leberkäs with a fried egg, hot chocolate and you're out of CHF 30, for half that it would be justified.

In wonderful weather we enjoyed a fine glass of white wine and a delicious tarte flambée. Everything was very nice, very friendly service. We'll be happy to come back, thank you very much

We were on the Zugerberg today (ascent) in moderate, rather cool weather. After a nice walk, we were happy when we saw the sign "Restaurant open today" (according to the website, warm food served until 5 p.m.). However, when we arrived there at 2:30 p.m., we were told that no more food orders were being accepted, that the kitchen was overwhelmed and that the food was running out anyway. I'm sorry, what?! At first we thought it was a bad joke, but we were actually only able to order drinks. Something like that shouldn't happen! Imagine if the weather had been nice?! Dinner already out at 11 a.m. or what? The waitress did everything right and can't do anything about it... But on a Sunday/public holiday you have to expect more visitors than on a normal Thursday and plan accordingly. Such an imposition. After a hot chocolate to warm up, we were completely disappointed and left with growling stomachs.

According to the service staff, the kitchen was already closed at 2 p.m.? It's a shame we won't be coming back.

After waiting half an hour, I asked at the buffet whether self-service was available...the snippy answer: You can see what's going on here. Someone is coming soon. After another 15 minutes we left again. We couldn't even order anything to drink...

1.5 hour wait for the food. Other guests simply weren't served for 20 minutes.

A small but very hospitable restaurant on the Zugerberg. The ringing of cowbells from the grazing cows right behind the house gives you an Alpine feeling - with a delicious fruit cake with your coffee - a cozy place to linger 🇨🇭🇨🇭👍☕️

Not a place for dog owners. It was windy and very cold. The pub was empty and yet no exceptions were made. This is absolutely ridiculous for a pub on the Zugerberg. Addendum: Dogs are apparently not allowed due to the open kitchen, anyone who plans a "mountain pub" like that probably hasn't understood anything. The two restaurants Vordergeissboden and Pfaffenboden are even more highly recommended.

There are options to sit outside or inside. There is a selection of drinks and food. It's tasty and plentiful, the service is friendly and quick.

Stopped by by chance this afternoon. Immediately found a place on the open terrace. There are additional covered areas with an après ski flair. The service is very friendly and nice and very prompt. Menu is manageable. Very fine!!! Feel free to come by again.

The food is freshly prepared and tastes good. We were told in advance that it would take a little longer today (about 30 minutes for the food to arrive) because the restaurant was very full. It just took a long time to pay. Important to know, you can only pay in cash here.

The place is very picturesque and the staff makes an effort. Unfortunately, at 2:30 p.m. when we arrived the air was somehow outside. Although I can't judge what it was like before. The staff walked around in a somewhat disorganized manner and had no focus on which guests' turn it was and when. The counter was always cluttered with dirty dishes and/or new drinks. The glass box was overflowing etc. But in my opinion it wasn't because there weren't enough staff on site. As mentioned before, either the air was out or there were too few trained service staff. The food wasn't THE experience either... My "fitness plate" with loaf for CHF 22 had less salad on it than the menu salad. The tart somehow had glutamate in it or was flavored with aromatic flavor. Positive point: our daughter's syrup was free! That's a real plus!

Nice service, great food. Child friendly with playground. Experience was a bit chaotic with uneven waiting times, menu without side dish and the request not to pay with card!?

Nice place to stop for a beer and a little rest while doing the Zugerberg hike. Only takes cash (!), but luckily I had enough. My meager German (and even poorer Swiss German) sufficed (barely) for my interactions with the staff.

Super nice place and still highly recommended even “in lockdown”. Lots of food and snacks as well as drinks and super fine mulled wine (one of the best I know) across the street. Accessible via various beautiful hiking trails, whether in the snow or in the countryside!

Kitchen stop!!! After half an hour we got the drinks. Then we were told we had to be patient, there was a kitchen stop? After 1 hour Wait, it means we can order the food in half an hour!!!??? So that's not possible, everyone's waiting. That doesn't even give 1 ☆

Lousy. First there was a long wait until we could order. Then a miserably long wait until the food came. The menu was delivered without the soup we ordered. Fish crispies were still frozen inside. Even when there was a lot of activity, you could expect more. Highlight at the end. Payment can only be made in cash.

Wir waren 7 Personen zum Mittagessen. Aufgrund Corona haben wir reserviert was sehr empfehlenswert ist,da im Innenbereich nicht sehr viel Platz ist.Wir hatten alle Cordon-bleu mit Pommes und Gemüse. Das Fleisch war Butterzart und alles sehr schmackhaft. Als Gemüse gab es Rotkohl und Spinat,ich hätte mir da lieber klassische Gemüsebeilage gewünscht.Über Mittag aufgrund nur 1 Servicekraft eher lange gewartet und leider wurden die Kinderessen auch erst nach der Vorspeise serviert anstatt gleich am Anfang. Sonst soweit alles sehr empfehlenswert und sehr lecker. Wir kommen gerne wieder.

Wunderschöne Landschaft. Perfekter Gehweg etwa 30 Minuten von der Zugerbergbahn aus zu Fuss. Ganzer Weg ziemlich eben gerade aus. Sehr gemütliches Restaurant, heimlich eingerichtet. Grosse Terasse, Sitzplätze darussen wie auch im Restaurant. Sehr freundliches und aufmerksammes Personal. Super leckeres Essen, grosse Portionen. Hunde werden freundlich auf der Terasse empfangen.Komme bestimmt wieder, sehr empfehlenswert.

Wir haben gestern das Restaurant Hintergeissboden besucht und uns als Familie zu dritt draussen auf der Terrasse an einem Tisch für 4 bis max. 6 Personen am Eingang gesessen. Das Restaurant präsentiert am Eingang das COVID-19 Schutzkonzept worin es heisst, dass man mindestens 2m Abstand zu anderen/fremden Gästen halten soll.Leider interessiert es die Wirte/Bedienung überhaupt nicht, dieses Konzept umzusetzen. Wir mussten mehrfach nachfragen, dass der versiffte Tisch abgewischt wird. Nach dreimaligem Nachfragen wurde der Tisch mit einem bereits am Nachbartisch benutzten Lappen schnell zu 60% übergewischt. Sauber ist etwas anderes. Der Tisch wurde nicht desinfiziert.Zudem hat die Bedienung uns zweimal (!) andere, fremde Gäste an den Tisch dazu gesetzt. Abstand 20cm. Die Wirte haben nicht akzeptiert, dass wir die unmittelbare Nähe zu fremden Gästen nicht wollten. Das Restaurant präsentiert zwar aus formalen Gründen ein Schutzkonzept mit den BAG Vorgaben, zwingt dann aber die Gäste mit fremden Gästen nah zusammen zu sitzen. Schade.
