Review 2023 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Improved service, prices remain high but the quality is there. Friendly bar but noisy inside. Meat or cheese platters with local products. Review 2022 ⭐⭐⭐Difficult to rate the Barbarian, if it were possible I would have given it 3.5. I loved the old version of this hot chocolate bar. It's still the same chocolate used but served in glass cups and smaller than before the reopening. On the terrace it's small with rickety tables. The chocolate and accompanied by a glass of water is the same but 7.- for chocolate and whipped cream is still expensive considering the quantity. Finally, the service is quite long.

Very cute cafe! Nice atmosphere, good lunch options and in great surroundings. Unfortunately, it wasn't a completely pleasant experience, as instead of the vegetarian burgers we ordered, we were given two pork burgers, which we didn't notice at first and ate. For me, as a long-time and committed vegetarian, this was an unpleasant and disgusting experience. Although something like this can happen, I found the apology to be very cautious. In the end I was very negatively surprised that there was no accommodation regarding the price and they even charged the extra for the meat burger, which my friend kindly kept.

I had a great time in the sun on the terrace with a friend. The waitress was absolutely brilliant, a real ray of sunshine that warms the heart. Chocolate as always delicious. THANKS !

We came this evening at 11:00 p.m. to drink the famous Marta hot chocolate. Unfortunately, a cold welcome with a waitress who claims to no longer serve hot drinks from 10:30 p.m.... yet we had come several times to drink hot chocolate at those times with a welcome without feeling unwelcome... too bad .

Comfortable place to have a drink and protect yourself from the cold. It has a very cute little terrace and the interior is very cozy. The coffee was very delicious, as well as the infusion we ordered.

Very disappointed not to be able to put a review as good as the ones I see. One Saturday morning, around 10 a.m., after seeing these famous positive reviews, we went to this charming bar which obviously makes very good chocolate. We enter politely and say hello (normal) but we get no response. So we show up at the bar after 3/4 minutes to ask if we could sit down. We are told that a table is available. Since then we are still waiting... everyone who entered was served immediately. We still don't know why, the waitress never stops at our table. Too bad it looked great!

Cozy and cozy cafe at the foot of the "escaliers du marché", which take you to the Lausanne cathedral. They have a terrace and the option to have a drink inside.

This place is worth a stop. The service is excellent, smile, politeness. The setting is pleasant, quiet, the view is beautiful, the terrace is small but well appointed. The food is good, we ate at lunchtime. The menu is minimalist and that’s a good sign of freshness. A stone's throw from the center, before or after a visit you have to stop there!

Good little bar on the way up to Lausanne Cathedral. You will find good cold drinks and ice creams there. I wasn't able to try the dishes unfortunately but they looked very good. The service is efficient and smiling. I recommend the ginger lemonade: delicious!

Nice coffee place by the cathedral and located by the stairs that go to place de la palude. Coffee was decent, bit overpriced maybe but the terrace was lovely and I had a good break to also use the free WiFi.

A lovely little, cafe restaurant found on our way. A pleasant and friendly welcome, delicious little Gruyere and ham sandwiches, served with a very good Swiss roll. And the service with beautiful large slices of ham and cheese served generously... I highly recommend this pleasant place at the foot of Lausanne Cathedral. I absolutely don't find him Barbarian..😁

Known for its hot chocolate - that I never tasted. The rest is good too. Love the terrace, under the cathedral along the staircase to la Palud. Very nicely renovated. Staff was really friendly and efficient.

First time since the renovation, they have managed to keep the spirit of the establishment as well as Marta's good hot chocolates. Thank you for the service as well as for your kindness towards the children. Friendly daughter and dad around 4 p.m. with an original goodbye ;)

Le Barbare is a small café (with terrace) and restaurant a stone's throw from Lausanne Cathedral. The staff is smiling and welcoming, the food is local and seasonal. At lunchtime a daily special is offered and on Sunday it's brunch! I recommend the very well stocked “a bit of both” boards. The photos speak for themselves!

In 1983 my parents met here by chance or perhaps by destiny. Anyway, it's 2022 and now I and my two siblings are here, my parents are still together, and this Cafe is still kicking and still great!

It was closed but now it reopened with a new owner but still the same recipe for hot chocolate. One of the best place for that. Definitely a must see if you are in town .

The daily menu was excellent and very generous. The setting is magnificent and warm, the service efficient and friendly. I recommend !

If you're hungry, move on. The dishes are certainly very good, but the quantities are ridiculously small. When it opened, the quantities were quite respectable for a daily special. Unfortunately for some time (change of cook?) the lunch plate has been reduced to nothing. Just look around and everyone is having dessert because the plate can't hold you back. We still expect for a daily menu for more than 20.- to have more than two pieces of tofu to eat without having to have a dessert and a hot chocolate…. I hope they will rectify the situation and not rest on their laurels…

Hot chocolate with cream for 7CHF. (No cream 5CHF). It was thick and tasty (however not at thick as the Chocolate Caliente de San Ginés, Madrid, for my Spanish fellows). The atmosphere is cozy, crowded,and not too big. There is a cute terrace

I eat at Barbare every week and it's always delicious. The dishes are inventive and comforting. The place is very cozy, both at lunchtime and for an aperitif in the evening. The team is always super nice. It actually feels like home :-)

At 17:35 there was no more possibility of drinking or eating anything because all of the machines had already been cleaned. And the place is supposed to close at 18. Really disappointing and not professional at all. Do not recommend.

Warm and pleasant place with a good choice of artisanal and regional drinks in particular. Beers, hot chocolate, wines and spirits, it's a bar worthy of the name for the day and also for going out in the evening. Daily menu at midday during the week, otherwise small meals available, simple and effective: flavored hummus, charcuterie and/or cheese platters, trout rillettes and tomato panisse for that day. I was able to taste a little of everything and it was very good. Nice discovery. I wish the new owners every success!

great old bar renowned for its famous hot chocolates! a great place to spend some time on a rainy Saturday indoors or outside on a sunny and warm Sunday!

I had tuna salad and olive pizza and they were all delicious. But since the olives have seeds, you have to eat them in large quantities, and be careful at first!! There are three beers, but they are all non-alcoholic, so I take away one star. Both the owner and the uncle are kind.

This tiny and cosy little place have to be on your "to do" list if you are visiting Lausanne. In Winter, it's the perfect place to taste their marvelous home made Hot chocolate. It's the perfect cure against swiss cold weather. In Summer or Spring, it's a nice place to eat a light meal in the old town of Lausanne near it's spectacular Cathedral. This bar ( if we can describe it like a bar, it's more like a small restaurant own by a kind and passionate lady) has known a plenty of generations of Lausanne's citizens and everyone who has studied in Lausanne knows this place.

Omelettes are great! Get the hot chocolate with ice-cream AND cream, there is no point doing things by halves. Service is very quick, staff are really nice. The place is cosy and quaint!
