Old Zermatt in Zermatt

Personally, I don't know why this site's rating is 4.3. For me it's 4.9, for sure! I received extremely good service, the "menu of the day" is excellent and at fair prices (considering we are in Zermatt), the place is beautiful and well located. The person who helped me spoke Portuguese, English, French, Italian and a little German, fantastic! Good wines and beers too. Anyway, I liked everything; I almost didn't go because of the rating here, but I went and I definitely didn't regret it!

You really need to dip the lamp rack with cheese. It’s super delicious. The chili is also amazing 🤪

What a horrible experience. I can’t believe that they can got over 4 stars on Google. The food is extremely salty and their service and attitude is very poor. The dish described in the review were not on the restaurant's menu. I regret that I didn't leave this restaurant 😅. The value of the food was not worth the price.

Birthday dinner for my wife while we were in Zermatt. Standard fare prepared wonderfully. They even brought us a birthday dish at the end of the meal.

Astronomically expense. For four adults, $200 more than the true five stars like the Whimper Stube. Insisted on crowding us all into one small room when much larger room available. We had a very mediocre chicken dish which was nearly $100 a person. Still. Nice view and decent service

This is a restaurant where you can enjoy the view of Zermatt while eating. I ordered cheese fondue, and since it's a tourist spot, it was reasonably priced. It would be lonely if it was just bread, so I added meat and other things.

The service is so terrible that the taste of the food doesn't even matter. I've never encountered such a restaurant in my life; it's shocking. Whenever I asked anything, it felt like I was going to be scolded; do you discriminate between tables? It has greatly worsened my perception of Switzerland. If I come again, I definitely won't be returning here. Even one star is too generous.

I had the Deer entrecôte. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a fancy dinner. The bartender was amazing. Wish I could remember her name. This place will not disappoint.

We went for dinner on a snowy day, we didn't need a reservation, it was very quiet. We stayed near the fireplace and it was very pleasant. We ate some fish (cod) and chef's soup. There were also artisanal breads with some tasty cheese foam (?) We had a Spritz, one of the best we've ever tasted. The service is good.

Excellent food, wide choice and extraordinary waiters that helps make it a true Swiss experience. If you go to Zermatt, you have to go to Old Zermatt !

Ordered cheese fondue here. We were told this was their specialty so we were looking forward to it. It could be just me and my friends, but we didn't like it at all. The bread was old and dry to begin with, not a tasty bread to serve and certainly not for the price paid for it. The spice mix, chili and potatoes were also just a sad addition. Nothing to write home about. The place itself looks okay, nothing special but not dirty or bad either. I was happy with the service. I left my purse there when we left. When I realized this at the hotel I quickly ran back and couldn't find him at the table. Only a member of staff came over and gave me my bag, they noticed this and kept my bag behind the counter. I am grateful to them for that. Mixed review, but I will certainly never come back for the food.

Been to several restaurants around Zermatt over the last few years, but this place stands out as one of my favorites. Wait staff was incredibly friendly, attentive, and fun and gave great recommendations for the best experience. Wine selection is superb. The atmosphere is relaxing comfortable and relaxing. The fondue was the best I’ve had in Zermatt. Will for sure be coming back here

The service was AMAZING! The waitress was not only knowledgable but also very kind. The staff was extremely on top of it. And of course the fondue was delicious!

Whats the point to be open if in the middle of the season at 5:30pm you dont serve food because “the staff is resting until 6pm”? Hungry people after the slopes are literally queing up and leaving to other spots…

If you want to sit at a nice and cozy place, come here. If you want dull food for the highest price imaginable, also come here. We got the cheese fondue with bread and potatoes. The food tasted dull, the bread was not frech, maybe from the early morning. If you pay almost 40Fr per person for some heated cheese, you at least expect the bread that comes with it, which you dip in the cheese to be able to eat it, to be something of high quality. It was simply not. It tasted like it was from the local supermarket. No whole grains in it or anything special that distinguishes the bread from some plain old white bread. I find it hard to believe this menu can truly make someone enjoy their diner. After eating the bowl of bread with the cheese, you become nauseous. It is too much of the same stuff. And after getting the bill, you might want to reconsider your decision coming to the restaurant at all. The service was ok, nothing worth the money you have to leave there. Simply cannot recommend. Spend your well earned money elsewhere, because here you simply cannot get truly happy.

The service was fast and they let us in even though our reservation was later. Fred often checked in with us and was such a friendly staff to everyone. the Fondue was really good too. Happy to come again

I came here because of the rave reviews on gluten free food. Server was emphatic on several meals. I chose one of the risottos but googled the main ingredient of emmer, which i was not familiar with. . As much gluten as wheat!! They did replace the meal but my dinner companions were under impressed with food and service. One ordered a glass of wine which never materialized. As a Celiac i was not happy. Caveat Emptor!

Went here for our last night in Zermatt. Fondue was great, and the waiter was really nice and helpful. Would definitely go again.

Quality service, great gluhwein, and great food!

I went there after looking at the picture of the schnitzel, and it costs 90,000 won for one pork cutlet made from veal... It's different from the picture and there's a lot of strange rotten smell inside. I don't know if it was because I don't know European culture, but if you ask me if I can give you something as a favor, I have to say no. There's an additional charge. There is also a bit of racism here.

Good restaurant and good ingredient. But Tom yam kung is not taste as it should be.

The waiter was extremely unfriendly. When we ordered, he understood "bowl" instead of spritzer and then looked at us really badly when we said we had said spritzer. After a short discussion, he brought a spritzer and angrily slammed it on the table. We expect better and won't come back...

Had the cheese fondue for 2 , with a side of potatoes, it was good food and sufficient quantity, the staff was attentive and nice .

We had a great meal here. Our waiter Miguel was friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. We had our first Swiss fondue here and loved it--this restaurant has an upscale feel without the price.

Unique dishes but everything was great!

It was late at night and there were no restaurants nearby so I went there, and even though the kitchen closed in 30 minutes, I got today's menu, etc. You explained everything so kindly! I went alone, but I was thankful that they helped me find a good place to sit alone and that they kept an eye on my order and whether the food was okay! Thank you for your great attention to detail!

We were served quickly, we sat inside and the drinks arrived very quickly. I had two glasses of Swiss wines, one that is blend and the other pinot, very delicious. Two dishes that I leave the photos here that arrived 10 minutes after the drinks, so it was perfect. We had a dessert that we shared and like everything else it was very delicious. Good and pleasant service, I would return. Total bill: 103.90 CHF

My wife and I dined at Old Zermatt two nights in a row. The first night we were first amazed by the unblocked view of the Matterhorn - its probably the best view from the city. We were also delighted with the hospitality of the head waiter, Fred and the waiter that served us, Miguel. We wanted Viena schnitzel as our main course, it wasn't on their dinner menu, Fred asked the kitchen to make it for us, and it was served. Amazing service indeed. On the second night we dined at Old Zermatt to celebrate my wife's birthday and we were welcomed with even greater hospitality. Both Fred and Miguel served up an amazing meal, were always on call to see what else we needed and simply made us feel special. We could not ask for more on a very special day, at a very special location.

Alpine macaroni was amazing! I asked for something I might not get in the US and got the creamiest cheesiest Mac n cheese with a "Swiss" twist of onion rings, potatoes, and applesauce as part of the dish. I like these all individually so putting them in a dish together was an unusual but not unpleasant flavor like I thought it might be.

The service was super friendly and the food was delicious. We were on our honeymoon and there was a fairy stick dessert specially prepared for us.

Everything was absolutely perfect! It’s incredible to walk into a restaurant and feel like they are genuinely happy to have you there. The service was prompt, friendly, and informative, and the food was incredible. All of this, in addition to the stunning view of Zermatt and Matterhorn made for an anniversary meal that I will truly never forget.

The special pork dish 42CHF did not taste well. The service is terrible. Two service ladies showed discrimination on Asian people. The service lady even asked for tips?! (Hilarious in Europe)

You can have a great view the restaurant and they are offering blanket in the restaurant if you are sitting outside. In general the staff is nice but there is a male waiter is really rude and yell at us. I will still recommend to visit this restaurant but I think they will need a better staff training. :)

Absolutely incompetent racist staff! Whether in the restaurant or at the bar! You just have to look at the many reviews that confirm this! Absolutely NOT recommended when there are soooo many other great restaurants in Zermatt! (6.9.23 Thanks for the answer! Unfortunately it's only getting more and more ridiculous! I don't know what clock is ticking for you, definitely not according to mine and that of many others! And by the way, it was in the time, 15 minutes. , there was actually a table free. Loved this place! We were hungry after traveling and found Old Zermatt conveniently at our hotel. We started with Swiss wine, something our server suggested and was was delightful. We started with the burrata and is was very fresh the tomatoes were tasty. My husband ordered the halibut, best fish he had since traveling for two weeks around France and Switzerland. Of course being the pasta eater I am I had the Swiss Alpine Macaroni and cheese. Simply delicious! The patio view of the Matterhorn was amazing. Our server was funny and humorous and made our visit special. We appreciate good food so we tipped the kitchen!! Thanks!

Great experience in Zermatt. Great view, great service and great food.Miguel and team were amazing, during a rain storm they made sure we stayed dry outside. Wonderful wine and entree with special desert to make for a great experience.

Zermatt is one of the most beautiful places overall.

Great spot with decent view of the Matterhorn. Stopped for an apéro with friends when we arrived in Zermatt. Prompt service but don’t expect a warm welcome or smile. Our server definitely made us feel that we we interrupted them from doing something far more important than providing a nice service. Pity.

The view was good, but the service was unfriendly compared to the price and the food wasn't very good. It's a shame.

We arrived late into Zermatt but Fred was able to get us seated and accommodated us for dinner. Kudos to Fred and the entire restaurant staff who made our first night in zermatt such a great experience! The food and drinks were all phenomenal and the service from Fred was top notch for sure !! Comment from August 2023: The OldZermatt has changed the menu and philosophy a bit since our last visit. But the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff remain unchanged. When I read some comments accusing the staff of being incompetent or even racist, I simply CANNOT understand that. During our multiple visits to Old Zermatt, we saw how friendly and patient guests from all over the world were served. We will definitely enjoy eating at Old Zermatt again. 2 years ago I wrote: We have eaten at OldZermatt several times and have always been satisfied. The menus, which are always freshly cooked, are really good. Not prestige cuisine but honest, good food, well cooked and beautifully presented. We cannot understand the criticism of the service staff. The accusation of racism is definitely incomprehensible. During our visits to OldZermatt we saw guests from all countries and races. Everyone was treated equally politely. On the other hand, in Zermatt you also see guests who behave quite arrogantly towards the service staff. Our experience is that if you meet people politely, the answer will come back politely.

Delicious cuisine and wines, very nice people, reasonable prices ( karaffe wasser gratis to be mentioned for Zermatt !!), thanks again for the excellent diner !

I am disappointed with the new management. The menu is no longer what it was, the prices have gone up even though there is nothing to like: Tomato/peach salad for around CHF 25.-, service completely absent on the terrace... I, and my whole family too, greatly regret the atmosphere from before and I think I'm not the only one to see the terrace almost permanently empty. Too bad, the spot is still there.

It's a shame as a dark-skinned person not to even be served in the bar after being told by a blonde waitress to disturb the entrance and then waiting at the bar for a table, which is then given to someone else. There shouldn't be such service staff in Zermatt.

Beyond amazing! We met our beloved ski instructor on the mountain and then tried his incredible dishes. Complimenti Chef Bruno!

The staff was kind and friendly, and enthusiastically recommended meals. The food was delicious, especially the lamb chops, but the sauce was really a bit salty, which ruined the texture of the meal.

We had the weekly menu, which included a tomato salad, beef stroganoff with rice and cauliflower and tiramisu for dessert. Everything was very fine and tasty. We drank an Aperol Spritz and a Hugo. A coffee for dessert. The conditions were very friendly and responded to our wishes. Recommended!!!

Excellent traditional Swiss fondue, great service, lovely setting in Zermatt. Went with a party of 9, one who is gluten free due to celiac disease. They fully accommodated her with her own fondue pot and gluten free bread.

Amazing place in the heart of Zermatt. They happily accommodated our large group and made fondue for us, upon request, in the summer, despite it usually only being offered in the winter. One of the members of our group has celiac disease and they were able to safely accommodate her with her own gluten free fondue pot to avoid cross contamination and prepackaged gluten free bread. Would definitely recommend!

This was the best meal we had in Europe. We ate/drank in Ireland, France and now we found the gem of Switzerland. The Beef Tenderloin was perfectly cook and the veal was incredible. Great dinner and atmosphere looking at Matterhorn as the sun set. Heavenly.

Great food, great cocktails, and great service! Fred seemed to appear at our table whenever we thought we might need something but never hovered. The way the staff interacts with all the patrons is awesome - above and beyond. We had lunch and enjoyed it so much we came back for dinner. And the view is second to none!

Ridiculously small menu at even more ridiculous prices. While I was there, two other couples were seated, looked at the menu, and left. They had the right idea.

There used to be delicious Wiener Schnitzel and other great dishes. Unfortunately not anymore since the menu change this month. We tried fish and chips today. Apparently in beer batter. The fish fillets were old, inedible, the breading was wobbly and starting to dissolve. The fries tasted like they had been fried a second time and the quantity was not enough for a larger appetite. You wouldn't expect such poor quality from such an upscale kitchen.

Unfortunately, as hotel guests we were a bit disappointed in contrast to the hotel. The food was excellent and creative. Unfortunately the staff was stressed even though only about half of the tables were occupied. The orders were taken almost as we walked by.

I enjoyed it so much! This is a restaurant with a view where you can enjoy a glass of wine while looking at the Matterhorn from the terrace!🤤

AMAZING! After a week in Italy and 8 years in Manhattan NYC this has been my favorite meal of all. My bf got the beef tenderloin and it was honestly perfect. I looked up and he ate the whole thing in 1 minute…. Only got 1 bite from it and was mad that I didn’t get more. I got the lobster squid ink tagliolini.. The lobster carpaccio melts in your mouth.. everyone should go here!!

Very spacious restaurant, the tables and chairs are NOT close together, a real feel-good atmosphere, very good food, sensational, extremely attentive and very friendly service, which makes the evening perfect.

Very good! They had gluten free options, i had the soup of the day - a sweet potato soup with no croutons - and their “Roski” dish of pulled lamb and it was amazing. They were happy to accommodate my allergy. Everything my table got looked fantastic.

Every time we go to Old Zermatt we have a great experience. The staff are always very nice and accommodating. The food is great at well; they have the best meat and cheese fondue in Zermatt! We highly recommend it!

We arrived late evening without a reservation and very hungry. We had already been declined a spot at two other nearby restaurants. We were accommodated so kindly at Old Zermatt and sat at the bar. Even better than that, our food and service were outstanding. Interesting and delicious. Our server Kira was very knowledgeable and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Charming restaurant. Good food and excellent experience. My partner and I stopped in here for dinner during an evening walk and it was a very pleasant surprise. The quality and presentation of the food exceeded our expectations. Our waiter was very attentive and made the visit 5 stars.

There are likes and dislikes, but I was happy because I had already experienced discrimination at a pizza place. Of course, it was a leisurely evening for me. It was about 40 francs including the tip, and I was very satisfied.
