Great restaurant, great place with historic city wall remains and historical information boards worth seeing. Highly Recommended. I only found a Valentine's Day drink at 17.50 Sfr to be significantly overpriced and I found that to be an opportunistic rip-off, because who asks for the price of a Valentine's Day drink, so a point is deducted when it comes to service.

We were at the Bel Etage as part of the theater menu. There was a fixed menu for 139 francs (ticket 40 francs) - no drinks. For me, as a vegetarian, I had to find something spontaneously - which shouldn't be that difficult in a restaurant. The greeting from the kitchen: cold fried mushrooms with no taste of their own. Starter carrot soup with cold carrot cake - sweet flavor. Main course vegetable curry. More precisely: tasteless chickpeas in a floury sauce with tiny sprinkles of kohlrabi and cooked cauliflower chunks with a mayonnaise sauce. Also fried again: tofu pieces - rubbery, tasting of frying fat. The dessert, however, was delicious. Plus mineral water for 15 francs a bottle. So much money for such disappointing food can actually only work because hotel guests fall for the historical ambience. In addition, there is a hectic service every minute that pours full water glasses even fuller. Not again!

I didn't understand what justifies this restaurant's star in the Michelin guide. No surprises or special features from a taste point of view. There is no sublimation or particular enhancement of the dishes... it is quite "flat" in fact. It is possible to make a classic very well or even exceptional, but that was not the case here. Really nothing special that warrants a star. Furthermore, I concede that the star does not imply having a particular sommelier service but in this restaurant which lends itself to a certain style and a certain standing (it is not a starred street food stand but a posh hotel restaurant, the bottles are even specially labeled with the name of the restaurant), it is a shame that the waiters know so little about the wines they serve and do not describe them more than that. I have had much better taste and service experiences in non-star restaurants. The atmosphere is pleasant but nothing special and the acoustics are quite loud and not ideal for hearing yourself. The staff is friendly but just what is necessary, nothing special. Good gastronomically

My remarks, Dark room, a candle to highlight the dishes of the starred restaurant. Dish: St-Pierre super salty, I sent the dish back because it was inedible! In the meantime, my partner remains alone with her plate which is getting cold while they redo my dish... sorry just the fish. The vintages do not match the wine list. 2021 for 2017. Not very professional for the level announced. I Price: Starter: simple, tasty scallops, but main course costs 56 chf! 1 liter of still water costs 15 chf… we reach peaks on the coefficients on a “basic” drink Dishes priced at around 60 chf… Finally not surprised that we were in the dark, alone in this rather pretentious restaurant which practices diabolical prices "Teufelhof" To the wise...

Had dinner there. Had booked Etage but were seated in the Atelier downstairs. The veal dishes were excellent. Gazpacho salty. Ravioli well presented with burrito cheese. Desserts good. A little dark and chilly as night fell as it was in the open. Lovely weather made it feel special. Otherwise a nice little restaurant. A little pricey but reasonable value.

The restaurant does not have air conditioning. It was very stuffy. Due to a thunderstorm with heavy rain and strong winds, it was impossible to open the windows. We waited about 40 minutes for our order to be taken, although there were only 5 tables. We didn't leave only because of the weather. But we didn’t regret it) as soon as we accepted the order, everything was brought quickly. The food was amazing! Good wine list. A fairly famous Michelin star restaurant in Basel. Second visit following January. Last January visit, I gave the food, taste, appearance, atmosphere, and professional service all 4 or more points. I was particularly impressed by the skill of the female server with dark hair and straight bangs. It seems like I had very high expectations for my second visit. Summary of second visit. Food taste: 4 points. Atmosphere: 2 points Service: 3 points For me, who thought the food was good as long as it tasted good, it was an affordable meal that reminded me how important other minor elements are to the overall restaurant experience. I once again found the atmosphere where I could fully focus on the food prepared with great care to be precious. Realizing the obvious fact that secondary factors determine whether a restaurant operation system is excellent or not. First of all, it seems that only outdoor seating is available for dinner during the summer. There was no prior information about this, so I went up to the first floor (the second floor in Korea), where I had been before, and then returned to the ground floor. When I asked about the dress code in advance over the phone, I was not informed of this at all. Our couple sat in the outdoor seating area right next to a group of about 60 people attending a birthday party. I was worried about the noise from the group, but since the other seats were along the entrance passage, I thought this would be better. As the appetizer bread was being served, two elderly people at the end of the group table, four steps away from our table, started smoking cigarettes casually. One of them walked barefoot without shoes. Even though there is no dress code, it is a rare sight at a Michelin star restaurant. Still, I think it could be because of the unusual weather that day, with temperatures approaching 34 degrees. Then, another man brought a chair and joined the smoking table. By the time the amuse bouche was served, a total of five people were smoking. This place has already become a smoking shelter. We'll still wait until the appetizers are finished. The partner could not stand it anymore and jokingly expressed his opinion to the server, saying, ‘You didn’t tell me that this seat was a smoking area.’ The server's expression seemed like he couldn't understand the cigarette group, so he rolled his eyes and slightly shook his head and said he would pass it on to the server in charge over there. From this point on, I began to walk outside the front door of the tobacco group and smoke a cigarette. Their eyes are on us. He started glancing in our direction. A happy birthday song comes on and we say happy birthday. Actually, I'm not as sensitive to cigarette smoke as my boyfriend, and the fish dish with jimmy churi sauce that was served around this time was excellent, so I enjoyed the food without even noticing that they were watching. When I go to a Michelin-starred restaurant where the menu price is much higher than in an average restaurant, I hope at least that my meal is not spoiled by smokers. As it's summer, we had no choice: terrace obligatory. There, two large tables (probably 20-30 per table). We are sitting very close to one of them. The three people at the end of this table are smoking. One of them lights cigarette after cigarette. Other people at the table move towards them when they want to smoke. We had up to 6 people smoking within a meter of us while we were eating. I told the waitress that I didn't know we were seated in the "smoking area" of the terrace. There she asks her colleague to intervene. The latter, instead of simply asking these gentlemen to go and smoke aside, speaks to them while pointing at our table. Result: stares that killed the whole evening when they went to smoke in a more appropriate place and, when we left, one of the guys clapping, an applause that looked almost like a middle finger. This same person, moreover, walked around barefoot on the terrace all evening. Sorry, but I'm not paying CHF 350.- for a meal alone to endure that. In this regard, I doubt that these people paid the same price as us. The restaurant should ban smoking on the patio if there is no other place to eat, not to mention there were small children at the other large table (another group for a dinner 'birthday). And servers should have a minimum of common sense. It was my second visit of the year and, this time, the dishes, although careful, did not have the taste refinement of a Michelin-starred restaurant. This was my second and last visit to this establishment.

To be honest, we had promised more. We had the five course menu at Bel Etage. It's okay but unfortunately not a star standard. Addendum after the restaurant's response: I would now like to respond to the standard answer again and clarify our experiences. Especially on the topic of perfection. If you pay 400 CHF for two people in one evening and are in a star restaurant, you can expect a certain standard and a certain perfection. Unfortunately, our experience was far from that. We believe there may have been a time when things were significantly better and guests were happy. Based on the positive reviews, we decided to visit the restaurant. But we couldn't speak of these positive impressions, at least that evening. Wir waren zu zweit an einem Mittwoch für das "Junger Gourmet" Angebot dort und hatten einen wundervollen Abend. Nach scheinbar unendlicher Zeit sich wieder verwöhnen zu lassen war schon Freude genug, aber was wir im Bel Etage geniessen durften war einfach meraviglios. Vom Aperitiv über das fantastische Essen mit richtig tollen Weinen, welche deutlich mehr als einfach nur eine Begleitungen waren, hat einfach alles gestimmt. Der Service verliert nie die gekonnte Balance zwischen verspielter Noblesse und entspannter Bodenständigkeit und erleichtert so auch uns jungem Publikum die Freude an Gourmet zu finden ohne die verkrampft-perfektionistischen Elitismen welche man leider zu oft in anderen Lokalen dieser Klasse vorfindet.Preis-Leistung absolut unschlagbar, daher bleibt einem auch das böse Erwachen am Schluss erspart. Wir freuen uns riesig auf das nächste Mal, nach dieser tollen Erfahrung hoffentlich schon ganz bald!

Wir wurden freundlich empfangen und an einen schönen Tisch beim Fenster geführt. Der Service war zu Beginn etwas harzig. So wusste die Serviceangestellte nicht, wie teuer die mögliche Weinbegleitung ist oder die Auszubildende hat das Brot an den Tisch gebracht, ohne dass sie uns begrüsste. Danach waren aber alle sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.Das Essen war sehr gut und auch fürs Auge schön zubereitet.Wir hatten ein Drei-Gang-Menu für 115.--. In meinen Augen ist dieser Preis etwas zu hoch, da die Vorspeise wie auch das Dessert dem angeschriebenen Preis nicht gerecht wurde.Trotzdem danke für den köstlichen Abend.

Das Restaurant befindet sich im ersten Stock eines alten Gebäudekomplexes, der als Hotel, Gasthaus sowie für kulturelle Veranstaltungen genutzt wird. Das Restaurant besteht aus drei Zimmern, die meisten Tische waren um 19.30 bereits vergeben. Die mit einem Michelin Stern ausgezeichnete Küche bot ein 3-Gang-Menu zum Preis von 115 ,-CHF an, das auf regionale Produkte setzt und ansonsten den sommerlichen Temperaturen angepasst war. Das Amuse bouche, eine Mousse von Gänselebermousse und Rotweinbirne, überraschte angenehm. Auch die Vorspeise, ein mariniertes Hamachifilet mit einer Pimms-Gurken-Spuma und Fenchelsalat war für meine Gaumen sehr fein aufeinander abgestimmt undüberzeugte. Dagegen konnte der Hauptgang (Barre de linge mit Amalfi-Zitrone, Tomatenvariation und Gnocchi nicht ganz mithalten, auch fehlte mir etwas die Verbindung zwischen den einzelnen Aromen. Letztendlich war mir die Säure der Zitronen und der eingelegten gelben Tomaten etwas zu dominant. Beim Nachtisch überzeugte mich die Nektarinentarte mit ihrem besonders krossen Boden mehr als die Trilogie von weisser Schokolade und Zwetschge.Die Auswahl an offenen Weinen empfand ich als etwas limitiert. Als Weisswein wurde beispielsweise ein toskanischer Chardonnay aus dem Jahr 2016 angeboten, der die typische fruchtige Note vermissen liess und für meinen Geschmack keine ideale Weinbegleitung zum Fisch darstellte. Auf Nachfrage gab es dann auch einen Chardonnay aus dem Burgund mit komplexem, leicht fruchtigem Bouquet. Der offene Wein wurde uns nicht berechnet. Der Service, bestehend aus zwei jungen Damen, war angenehm und diskret. Insgesamt war der Abend im Bel Etage eine gute Erfahrung, um einen Einblick in die gehobene Schweizer Küche zu gewinnen. Und das Konzept des Hauses ist,ohnehin so interessant, dass sich ein Abstecher in jedem Fall lohnt.

We had e really great evening at Restaurant Bel Etage. At the beginning you can choose from 5 different breads. For starter we had foie gras and afterwards scallops with wasabi- mayonnaise and vegis. The scallops were cooked perfectly! Also the main course was excellent. Especially the sauce which had a slight touch of chocolate was really nice. We took the recommended wine and it was amazing. The Bel Etage has several individual rooms which provide a cozy intimate atmosphere. The cuisine is astounding, a treat for the culinary senses. I've been working in Basel for close to a couple of years, and have been trying out a lot of restaurants with colleagues to find a place where the food's excellent, and where there's a possibility to talk. Tried the Bel Etage today on a lark -- pretty much a stone's throw away from where I work -- and just like that, I found a place that fitted my bill for a business lunch. One thing that could be improved in the menu today were the raviolis, which were a bit on the cooked side of al dente, but otherwise a pleasant surprise. Definitely enjoyed it better than the Trois Rois' brasserie round the corner. Am very likely to return with even colleagues!

Considering the price and reputation this was a major disappointment. The food did not come together and the main course in particular was terrible. We had a wine pairing which was not great, the first wine we sent back as it was tasteless.. Then the waiter poured water into my wife's wine Glass, followed by bringing me the wrong food ( it wasn't that hard we both ordered the same set menu)... Overall poor food and wine pairing, poor service all for a grand total of 500chf for 2 . Completely over priced and and terrible quality, will not be back.

We wanted to experience the fish inspired 5 course bel Etage Menu including the Wine assortment. Whatcha disappointed for an extraordinary price tag:My husbands order was mixed up, my water was poured into my wine glass ( yes there was still wine in it), staff changed during every course and the staff did not know the menu composition. Btw restaurant was empty 4 staff for 8 guests... What a disappointment. Our plates went back half eaten (..the portions are tiny so it was not because of the quantity of food that we sent it back) but no one asked if it was ok. When we offered our highlevel feedback the answer was : we are sorry we will try to do better the next time... (hmm very likely they will not get that chance...just too expensive for second chances...)If you want to spends extraordinary amounts of money on food- please don’t do it in teufelhof... Les trousers rois, cheval blanc,... much better choices... or even consider Zürich, Geneva, la Perle du Lac or book a cheap ticket to Paris.. (will come to the same amount for a much much much better experience) Avoided avoid avoid ...
