A lovely place to grab a quick bite and a good hot coffee on a rainy day. The staff was very friendly and helpful regarding recommendations. Highly recommend it.

I took a café latte, but it is cold. But they have a variety of breads. I didn't take it. I saw many people buying those bread.

Live their baked delicacies. The cinnamon roll is delectable, also their pain au chocolat and croissant. It’s one of the few places in Zurich that offer a proper French style croissant and not this dry, tasteless Gipfeli as in most places. Moreover, I’m such a fan of their cappuccino because it’s made with fresh, unpasteurised milk - don’t everrr change that, please. I do agree though that the coffee is a mild in taste but I like it and it’s simply impossible to please all. Often coffees at bakeries are of insufficient quality released from automats so how about, instead, we rejoice that they provide for quality drinks? Great place, always friendly. Thank you!

The bread is really good - but the price is also tough.

The quality of the bread is great from what I hear. However, they have zero allergen control which is unfortunate for a Service Business. The same towel and tools are used to take the nut and non nut bread of the shelves. Unfortunately due to that I cant buy anything there. Please use fresh napkins or something to Touch the different breads.. News September 2023....unfortunately and dispite of rising allergies worldwide to peanuts , soybeans and pulses John Baker declares non of these ingredients and still have today no allergene friendly behaviour with its products.....

During a past winter I ate a cold and bland sandwich from John Baker. Asked if they could warm up the sandwich, as that is quite basic and expected in such kind of establishment, but they didn't warm it up.

Bread and chocolate rolls are really good! The ambience is also great (in the morning it's really bustling here due to the commuters at Stadelhofen). Staff super friendly - recently ordered a chocolate croissant and because it was quite small, a second croissant was included for free. Good bakery for people who live in Niederdorf, as there aren't many good bakeries there!

I always look forward to treating myself to something here just before work. Today I ordered chocolate summit. Very delicious pastries and always very friendly people at the counter. The coffee is not very strong but it works.

Excellent no-nonsense sourdough bread, the only one I buy in Zurich if I don't have the time to bake myself. My favourites are the Ruchbrot and Olivenbrot. Früchtebrötli also very good. Other items are less convincing (Croissants are just slightly above average IMO, and sandwiches are very pricey and not that interesting). Still five starts, because bread.

Super tasty and great staff. Can really recommend. The chocolate bun is especially delicious.

The treats are heavenly!!! Loved the cheesy egg croissant and the americano! Seriously good…. Wanted to buy everything in the shop. Delicious.

Bread is really delicious, the fruit rolls are really great. The prices are slowly but surely really crazy, even for Zurich. I paid 15.- today for a normal sandwich and a roll. This is really at the threshold of pain. Sandwich without lettuce, cucumber etc.: Just two thin slices of bread, sauce, 3 slices of roast beef and a few sprouts. Quality has a price, but somewhere it gets naughty.

Nice and clean location but we're not there. I got a pretzel that only tasted like baking soda. I hope it was a mistake on the dose of bicarbonate because it was inedible.

The Ruchbrot is not worth its price. It is almost tasteless and very expensive. The next day the bark was very dry and rubbery.

Delicious sandwiches and coffee

Top baked products but unfortunately the chai lattes were both times a big letdown. We will continue visiting but mainly for the baked goods.

It was a stylish bakery! The people at the shop were friendly and spoke English! The recommended olive bread was a little salty on its own, but it was delicious. The weissbrotli was chewy and delicious.

As soon as I arrived I was asked what I wanted to order and answered I was still looking. When I was ready to order (wallet was obviously out) I was standing there for at least 3 min while one of the ladies at the counter was ordering the shelves in front of me without even looking at me. The other lady who welcomed me looked at me but did not move and continued chatting with a colleague? There was no other client at that time. I felt stupid standing there waiting so I left. A pity... I was there to try their bread for the first time and get one of their chocolate croissants which are delicious. Probably won't come back.

Today we had a really bad flat white at John Baker. The milk was practically not foamed and we were served a sad brown broth for the 6th - which really didn't deserve the name flat white. The barista clearly didn't know how to prepare the drink or how to use the machine correctly. A pity!

Overpriced for what it is, would not survive in any other place than Zurich.

I was drawn to this Bakery because of its look and unfortunately i was right. The interior & exterior are unique, in a good way. Love wood & white interior and the display of all the bread. The bread itself however is so-so. Their organic but the taste itself is quite bland. Tried their coffee & hot chocolate and their also quite bland. The coffee have very little coffee in it, or at least that’s what it taste like. The hot chocolate is even worse. If you love cute bakery / coffee shop and doesn’t rely on taste, this is the place for you!

The baked goods of all kinds as well as the sandwiches are all top notch, the carrot sandwich in particular is an absolute hit for me.

The smell in the shop is wonderful, the bread even more wonderful 😃

Beautiful bread served here. Recommend coming by just to see this place. The coffee was also quite good, recommend grabbing a savory sandwich followed by a sweet pastry. Take a sourdough loaf for the road and you're golden, ponyboy

The prices are really an absolute disgrace. As of this week, a normal size pretzel croissant with a few seeds costs an incredible 3.10 CHF. Croissant with egg 7.20 CHF. Two years ago these products cost 2.30 and 5.90. Inflation or not, this is simply going too far. Will not shop here again 👎👎

Large selection of very aromatic coffee

Very expensive and the coffee was, well (bitter). I can't recommend it... You have to pay for quality, but here it's completely exaggerated.

Extremely tasty selection of croissants, organic and biodynamic breads etc. A bit expensive for the sandwiches but overall my favorite bakery in the city!

In heart of Zurich old city, John Baker is a nice place for croissants especially for chocolate ones. There is a place to sit outside on side of the street where you can sit and eat. Coffee is also good here. As John Baker is famous, if you get in late you might not get your choice of bread!

Organic bakery with plenty on offer here. Little Pricy, yes, although justified with quality ingredients. Staff were very friendly and informative to us whom only speak English. Plenty on offer here. Raw Milk on offer here was a huge win.

Bakery located in the center of Zurich where there is a vast choice of products from bread to pizza to croissants to pastries and much more, all fresh and freshly prepared, a delicious visit is definitely worth doing

Very tasty chocolate croissant, BUT 12 CHF for a tiny sandwich with a few mushrooms à la BBQ and exactly one salad leaf is just ridiculous. I could have had two for that price with a lot more ingredients on it in any other bakery in Zurich. So that‘s a no go. (took 3 bites before taking the pic)

Your average non-European tourist might consider their bread to be excellent. Locals will point you to at least 2 bakeries within 750 meters that are demonstrably better and aren't demanding a hipster-hotspot premium. The bread is good, not great. The chocolate lye croissants could choke a horse and kill a pony. The brioche are dry and in search of flavour.

Did John Baker stop caring? Sad… From great bakery to bad coffee and bad croisant…and it gets smaller everyday! not the price though

Worth a visit! Sit in the courtyard and enjoy fresh baked bread, sandwiches, pastries, coffee.

Great bakery because everything is freshly prepared. In addition to rolls and bread, there are also salads, sandwiches, coffee, etc. Unfortunately there is no caffeine-free (decaf) coffee. The service is nice and mostly very motivated. Depending on the time of day, there may be longer waiting times.

I recommend brioches and hard breads than croissants.

Really love this spot! I always get a loaf of sourdough, but have enjoyed everything I've tried, including cake, sandwiches and pastries.

excellent bread, nice service / unfortunately sometimes a bit uncoordinated (slow), especially if you want to catch a S-Bahn / E.g. 5 people in line but only one server (3 employees are “busy” elsewhere in the background)

Rustic, yet beautiful. Flour sacks that are strategically placed as decoration send you back in time. You can enjoy a coffee and house specialties inside the brewery.

A one of a kind baker turned breeder. His breads are a real culinary delight. I just can't get enough of it. The different breads are well selected. The small pastries are also very tasty. There is always something for in between.

I write my review here, because when I contacted the social media account, from the no answer received, I assume they were not interested in direct feedback there. I frequently shop at both outlets in Zurich, but mainly at Stadelhoferstrasse. My overall rating: (+) • Best bread in town. No doubt! • The staff is very kind. (-) • The pastry products (tried several times, different ones) are way under expectation. They were basically dry. (@10-11am visit) The brioche with chocolate has a piece of dark chocolate baked in it, which gets hard again when it cools.. at least please develop a creamy ganache into it. The croissant/gipfeli was also very dry. The nuss zopf is really not the best I have ever eaten. • Some of the prices are a bit high. 10 CHF for an egg salad sandwich.. • I always buy a lot of things, and when I need a bag to take it away, I always got a wrinkled ugly used paper bag. I understand the counsciousness about the envirinment.. but please then invest to a branded proper paper bag from recycled paper.. I am happy to pay for it. I hope my feedback is valuable to you. Here you can get the best bread in all of Zurich.

Best brownies in town. The schoggie gipfeli is amazing too, but you need to arrive early to receive one. They are quickly sold out. The coffee and capuccino is also very good.

Superfine bread, all organic and friendly advice. Top shop. Life is too short to eat boring bread! 🍞🥖🥐POTENTIAL FOR IMPROVEMENT in OPENING HOURS: At what time do I buy bread to eat for breakfast the next morning? Exactly: In the evening after work, for example around 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. And at this time you can only buy remaining stock at John's or it is already "closed", so only Coop or Migros remain. Nobody buys their rye and wholemeal bread for breakfast in the morning and drags it through the day. You're more likely to buy these on the way home in the evening and then buy the sandwich for your break in the office the following morning. Then you can avoid queuing in the morning and get to the office or school early. I would argue that John's sales would be better between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. than between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. because then not only the break bread but also the more expensive Ruch and wholemeal bread would be bought.

Most probably the best bakery in town with a wide selection of excellent breads. Attitudes towards paying customers vary from being very friendly and helpful to being downright stroppy, rolling eyes and making side comments.

The place is warm and welcoming. The staff were friendly and helpful. The products are of high quality at a fair price. There is also a cafeteria service and the possibility of sitting outside away from car traffic. The sight of the hands kneading the flour and preparing the different products is enchanting.

The pains au chocolat are excellent!

Best bakery in Zurich by a stretch. I usually go for the choci gipfeli, gipfeli mit kernen or one of the roggen sauerteig breads. One downside is the coffee is not gourmet but can't have everything!
